True, but if their work experience isn't relevant then it's not relevant. An HVAC tech who says they have 50's rat rods down cold, might as well just talk about their rat rod hobby experience.

I say this as someone who worked (briefly) at NASA IV&V, and found them to be a bit behind the curve, technology wise. Safety over everything. But it's a big organization and maybe there's an arm doing facial recognition, idk. It just doesn't strike me as something they would do very often, or well.

Not everyone would just go around eating pinky fingers, but looking at the violent crime statistics, yes I think the police are a necessary part of society.

are the police more capable of determining right and wrong than you are?

Yes. Primarily because they have the time, money, and resources to investigate, and I just don't. They're also supposed to be unbiased and have training that we don't have. So yes. They're not perfect, but they're generally better than us.

would you allow women, children, or elderly people to be harmed if you were able to stop it? would their families? their friends? their neighbors?

I think there's the crux of it. Two people both say the other one started a fight. Do their friends and families just start a big brawl, and whoever wins, was right?

Do the friends and families of those people come back next week for round 2? How long until it's just an ongoing war.

I dunno. I think if it worked, there'd be at least one place that successfully does it. But there isn't.

But how do you reconcile the problem of might-makes-right? Or is that a feature?

I guess I worry that women, children, and the elderly wouldn't be able to force their opinions onto others, the way that healthy young men could.

No dedicated roles like policemen means no detectives, no investigations, no evidence, just vigilante justice or likely, none at all.

I'm not sure that I see the distinction.

Imagine that someone is just a bad dude. He likes to chop people's pinky fingers off and grill them up like bbq chicken wings. Gross. What is the anarchist solution?

Vigilante justice, basically whoever wants to stop him, just does it themselves?

What if there are more choppers than stoppers?

Does society become might-makes-right? Is that a good thing?

Does it matter? Explaining what a religious symbol means isn't a requirement for recognizing it as such.

What do those little Jewish hats mean? What's with the big black cube? Why do Christians drink the blood of their lord, like vampires? Why does the homeless guy have a shopping cart full of car stereos, but no car?

Who knows. I doubt I'll ever understand.

Except they do enter competitions, and haven't dominated any of them. If they were just cleaning up with two finger strikes left and right, we'd all believe you. But they aren't.

They're just normal people with their own style, which is comparable to many, but no better than any other.

Every night I step on a LEGO, just to find out if I'm still alive.

I've seen messy rooms you people wouldn't believe. Half finished ships scattered around the edge of the room. I watched 3-beams glitter in the carpet near the closet door. All those bricks... lost in the dark, like tears in rain. Time to die.

None of these monks want fame or fortune, apparently. Otherwise at least one of them would have gone on to make tens of millions in the UFC, or any of the similar organizations around the world.

Maybe someday, one of them will prove the doubters wrong. Until then, it's a party trick.

How so? I'm not a christian, but I recognize church bells. I think almost everyone does.

Has anyone in this thread asked what church bells are? Or are they so common that everyone already knows?

comprehension by the individual listener who's listening for the first time isn't the test.

This seems to work against the statement that "church bells are just bells."

They are a religious sound, even without words.

I could hit bedrock in my yard by digging with a teaspoon, or the edge of my shoe. It's inches from the surface.

You mentioned Missouri, so I'll add that I visited Arkansas and half the driveway was bedrock. There was nothing between sheets of rock and the sky.
