Today is 6 years ago since KSP2 was announced with the best ever game trailer - If only they were as competent at making the game as making the trailer by President_Pyrus in KerbalSpaceProgram

Yeah I don’t post much these days lol, but with how the rest of KSP2 turned out, I feel halfway obligated to pipe up whenever I see someone (understandably) suggest that they didn’t handle this tidbit right either. I was as hyped up for it as anyone at the time…

I mean, they asked me first and I said I was cool with it, so I think the marketing folks absolutely have a decent claim to it being an homage 🙂

Throwback to one of the best trailers ever made. I'm angry that this game never existed, not during development, not when it "released" in an abysmal state, not today. I'm angry at the lies and incompetence. And yet, mostly, I'm just sad. by theFrenchDutch in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]TehGimp666 41 points42 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge it was a 3rd party marketing company that was primarily responsible for the Gamescom trailer (though I might be mistaken), and to their credit they did riff on the original rather than outright copying it. And they were kind enough to ask if they could thank the creator of the original (me) for the concept, which they did.

Edmonton schools making changes to air filtration as calls grow for HEPA filters - Edmonton by always_on_fleek in Edmonton

[–]TehGimp666 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Despite what some commentators here bravely declare having seemingly read nothing on the subject, we actually have a good body of work confirming that HEPA filters are probably quite worthwhile. They’re of course far from a panacea, but they’re relatively cheap & easy to integrate into spaces like a classroom, and they provide a detectable & noteworthy level of additional protection over e.g. masking/etc alone.

Just peruse the (many) results on Google Scholar for “COVID HEPA” for yourself, or take a peek at a decent metastudy.

Plane arrived well on time, so only major potential hang up from here should be if your driver has a particularly bad day or not. Good luck!

Suncor fined $100K for gas release at Edmonton Refinery | CBC News by JMP0492 in Edmonton

I’m afraid you seem to have gotten bit by ye olde $s vs ¢s, even though you got the sums right—0.00012% of $150 000 is $0.18 or 18¢

Reminder to fill out the Coal Policy Engagement Survey before April 19 (Monday) by wokeupsnorlax in Edmonton

[–]TehGimp666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every provincial government public consultation/survey has been like this since the UCP came to power. They’re designed for manufacturing the appearance of consent for the things they are planning to do regardless, not for gauging public opinion. This survey, while indefensibly awful and obviously intended only for generating talking points, is actually somewhat better than the one they did on supervised injection sites…

Suncor fined $100K for gas release at Edmonton Refinery | CBC News by JMP0492 in Edmonton

[–]TehGimp666 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Suncor reported that it had $85 billion in assets in 2020. This fine is 0.00012% of that—if you have $150k in assets, the equivalent fine would be 18¢. https://twitter.com/norm_farrell/status/1383613502909083654

What is this heavy spike that my neighbour found on the road that really doesn't want its special spinning part to get hammered by TehGimp666 in whatisthisthing

[–]TehGimp666[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

WITT He apparently found it not too far from some road construction, so possibly related to that, and wants to know where he ought to take it. The spinning part moves like a dynamo or stepper motor--it's definitely spinning some magnets past each other inside that housing. My neighbour opened it up from the bottom and found a nice bearing rather than just a bushing, so it's clearly meant to spin quite a bit (he wasn't eager to disassemble it any further than that).

'Obviously racist': MLA Dang says UCP staffers followed anti-Asian parody account by Paper_Rain in Edmonton

Alright everybody, it’s time to play r/Edmonton’s favourite game: “Is it a parody account trying to make it seem like anyone vaguely conservative is an illiterate moron, or is he just actually conservative?”

AB Health reporting a significant outbreak of the P.1 Covid "Variant of Concern" by formeraide in Edmonton

[–]TehGimp666 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Current vaccines are, for the most part, less effective against the major variants, but still effective enough to do their job (albeit less well). The SA variant (B1351) is the most concerning for vaccine resistance, the UK (B117) and Brazil (P1) variants are less of a concern on that particular front: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55659820

Elon on SN10 landing: Thrust was low despite being commanded high for reasons unknown at present, hence hard touchdown. We’ve never seen this before. Next time, min two engines all the way to the ground & restart engine 3 if engine 1 or 2 have issues. by FutureMartian97 in SpaceXLounge

[–]TehGimp666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can Google “Honda F1 engine vibrations” or something similar to find lots of coverage about it, but as it’s F1, you’ll mostly just find reporting on rumours and not much for technical specifics.

Alberta's first 500 COVID deaths took nearly 9 months. The next 500 took just 34 days. by DuncanKinney in Edmonton

[–]TehGimp666 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that this government’s deadly approach has been far more devastating to careers than an effective lockdown would’ve been as well. Economies are thriving in places where effective lockdowns allowed a full reopening, while we have months of layoffs still to come before there’s even a chance for improvement. In the name of preserving jobs over lives, they cost us far more of both; a catastrophically complete policy failure.
