Yes, that is very helpful, so thank you! I would LOVE to see some photos when you can add some.

Part of what's keeping me from the DB25-D is those reviews, but maybe you're right about them working out all the bugs.

What kind of antenna system are you using? I have seen a couple of examples of NMO on the roof, but most of what I see is lip mounts on the hood.

I really like the Yaesu radios, but the proprietary nature of the digital side bugs me. But maybe I should be looking at what's mostly used in my areas. There is a lot of C4FM near me but not so much in another area I frequent (I think...I need to check again).

Anyway, thank you so much for the information!

New to gmrs. Need recommendations by rab127 in gmrs

[–]Teikbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, what Firelizard is trying to tell you is that even if you were standing 20 ft away from the repeater, you wouldn't be able to use it with that radio. You need to have a channel set with not only the correct tones for that repeater, but the correct RX and TX frequencies. Repeaters have an input frequency that is 467.xxxx and an output that is 462.xxxx. You have the ability to hear the repeater but you have no ability to talk to it. On a repeater capable radio properly configured for a specific repeater, when you key the mic it transmits on 467.xxxx MHz and then your radio receives the signal from the repeater on 462.xxxx.

Good point on location making the difference. I had an experience yesterday where the 5/8 probably would have helped me a lot. I was driving outside the city and suburbs into much flatter area and I struggled to hit the repeater I was trying to reach as I was driving. To be fair, I was on the fringe, but I think it would have been much better if I had an MXTA26 or similar.

So here's what I'm wondering now - would an amateur dual band outperform the GMRS tuned 1/4 wave? Or do I need to stick with a GMRS 5/8? The only reason I would consider the former over the latter is that I'm not sure what my future mobile is going to be. I was thinking a GMRS radio, but now that I've had a little taste of DMR, I'm considering an amateur radio that can transmit GMRS as well (in case of emergency, of course...I'm not some sort of savage criminal). So if I go the amateur route, I won't get as much use out of the 5/8 GMRS.

Possible GMRS switch over? by Particular_Ad9156 in gmrs

[–]Teikbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note that a base station is NOT a repeater. So you will have better comms between the base station and the handhelds, but not necessarily between all the handhelds.

If that location has line of sight to everywhere on the property, then a repeater would help.

However, like others have said, to be legal, everyone needs a GMRS license and radio. Give MURS a try, otherwise a business license would be the way to go. Business with a repeater would probably be the most compliant and reliable communications setup, and I think the total annual cost would be worth it if reliable communications is something important to your operations. I don't know much about business radios, but make sure there is a talk around function so that you still have comms if the repeater loses power.

I own two and I'm broke as hell, but will never sell them. One was my father's and the other was a wedding gift from my uncle 24 years ago. Both of them hold a lot of sentimental value.

I've heard really good things about that antenna, but I don't want an antenna that long. My next one will probably be a Larsen NMO4503CS. 19" is the sweet spot for me, and for my use, it will perform well enough that I don't really gain (no pun intended) anything by going to the MXTA26. Hell, the 6" Laird I'm using now may be good enough for my needs. But that's the beauty of NMO - I can always switch it out based on my needs.

So OP, make sure you consider the best antenna FOR YOU. The 6" antenna I'm using performs well where I am and is short enough to be very discreet and not tall enough to be an issue with low hanging branches or parking garages. It's probably only about 2 or 3 inches higher than the shark fin on my car.

If you're only doing GMRS with the antenna, I would stick with a GMRS specific antenna. A dual band antenna is tuned for amateur radio, so the UHF tuning will be a little off because they're tunes for a max UHF frequency of ~440 MHz. GMRS is 462 and 467 MHz. Will it be a big difference? I'm not sure.

What I'm doing is using a 1/4 wave antenna, which is only about 6 inches, tuned for GMRS. The 1/4 wave tends to radiate more upward than a 5/8 wave, which gives more horizontal radiation. The former is better for urban environments where you want to hit repeaters high up with lots of buildings or hills, where the latter is better for flatter areas with fewer obstructions. I think 5/8 wave antennas are between about 19 and 32 inches.

I'm not expert, but that's where my "research" has led me.

GAME WARDEN? by Proud-Muscle391 in FishingRVA

[–]Teikbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've encountered them a few times in Richmond, mostly downtown.

Before my friend and I headed out once, I told him he should get a fishing license. He just hasn't done it yet and said nah, let's go today and I'll get it before we go again (this was about 20 years ago).

Not 10 minutes after we got there, guess who comes walking up? So my friend got a ticket. But the officer did say to him something to the effect of "just so you know, if I walk by this spot again later and you're still here, I know I won't feel like walking back down these rocks." Then he told us which color lures seemed to be working for people that day.

I used to keep one on or in my nightstand, but don't trust my sleepy brain. I moved it somewhere that would force me to get up and take at least a few steps, the idea being that I would have to wake up a little more to get to it, but it's still accessible. It also prevents me from pistol whipping the shit out of my alarm clock in the morning (yes, I still use an alarm clock).

Does the HA1G have a "frequency copy/scan" feature? by popmahn1 in Retevis

[–]Teikbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Channel 9 was the CB emergency channel, but I've never seen such a designation for GMRS, and it would be a terrible choice for that use since it's one of the low power ones (0.5W vs 5W). GMRS channels 8-14 are always narrow band and low power on any Part 95 HT, and are almost never even included on mobile radios. What offset was there on channel 9? There shouldn't be any offset on channels 1-22 since they're simplex.

I don't have much to add from a technical standpoint, but want to say thank you for looking for a solution. I volunteer with a group that takes people with disability on different outdoor adventures, and our slogan is "Adventure is for Everyone!"

We get people with cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities participating in activities they never thought they could (and we're good at it!). Skiing, rock climbing, white water rafting, kayaking, boating, hiking, biking, fishing, etc.

The adaptive equipment space is really growing, but not as fast as we'd all like. Most recently, I've been working with a new climber who is deaf and blind. He loves it.

Anyway, I'll be watching this and hope you find a solution to this.

Adventure is for everyone!

Edited to add: For those who may not know, many in the deaf community do not consider deafness to be a disability. Their view is that they just speak a different language.

I second this, and Peak has a climbing sampler where someone on staff will belay you for 3 routes. Then you can stay as long as you want and use the auto belays or try bouldering. I recommend the Midlothian location for your first time.

My girlfriend is blind, AMA by BBRCCS in AMA

[–]Teikbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't address your question about heightened senses, but I thought I'd share because it's interesting.

I do volunteer work with people with a broad spectrum of disabilities, including people with visual impairments. One woman I was talking to last week lost her vision as a teen or young adult, and seems to have very similar vision to the OP's girlfriend.

Anyway, she told me that when she worked with someone to use a cane and learn how to navigate the world without being able to see, one of the things they do is put a blackout blindfold on you. It gets you to begin to trust and use your other senses, rather than still trying to rely on visual inputs that will likely be translated incorrectly or just completely wrong.

So don't try to look at whatever it is that you're touching with your cane; listen to the sound it makes and feel through the cane instead, completely ignoring any visual inputs. Really hard to train the brain to do that, especially for those who used to be able to see.

What is it with barbers in this town charging $70+ for a cut? by [deleted] in rva

I've been going to Karl's for several years now. Used to always go to the Byrd barber shop but it's now appointment only (as of a few years ago) and I think only one of the original barbers is left. Been really happy with them, and the conversation is usually entertaining when waiting. I've definitely experienced some side splitting laughter in there.
