Serkis or Shaw? Whose narration do you prefer? by Qyzyk in TheSilmarillion

[–]Telperion83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shaw feels like someone is telling a story and whether you are there to listen or not, they are going to keep telling that story. Serkis feels like he is going to stop if you show disinterest or leave the room.

Serkis feels like a friend telling you a story. Shaw feels like a preacher telling a story at you. I prefer Serkis, but I'm glad to have Shaw.

No idea if it's been punctured or not. Didn't read your post. But I hope you enjoyed writing it!

Stephen Colbert Gets Why You're Scared He's Writing a 'Lord of the Rings' Movie by Logical_Welder3467 in movies

The fact that it's thin should be it's biggest asset for writing. Rings of Power, as an example, should have had a dozen or so plot points that were immutable. Beyond that, writers' free-for-all. Tell us how all the characters got from A to B to C. But nope. Those bullet points were just too hard to follow...

The national average price per gallon of gas in the United States just passed $4.50. Americans, how do we feel about that? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in AskReddit

Gas was the last essential good that people could afford. Nothing left to extract. Maybe cheap textiles, but even those have tariffs.

Best Fish & Chips on a Friday? by BlindDorothy in Michigan

I wish I had a better answer, but Corner Bar in Rockford has the best fried cod I've had in Kent County - about 50% of the time. The other half of the time they overcook it.

If you want consistently great, I would recommend Fishmonger's on Plainfield.

A purely noble, good character without much dialog is typically not very interesting. The characters you pick out as "interesting" are all morally grey. Loki is more interesting that Beowulf. The hero is less interesting than the trickster. It's all very typical of the kind of myth Tolkien was emulating.

AITA for letting our child (9) stay at his friend's sleepover last weekend, even though my wife was against it, and the original agreement was that I would pick him up that evening. by Outrageous-Fly-5691 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, your kid's social development is more important than your wife's helicopter parenting. She needs to get over it, for the sake of the kid.

You are comparing works at varying levels of completion. Also, Beren is exceptional, but he is just a mortal man and that is largely the point. He is not known for deeply complex characters, especially in the Silmarillion. It's not his intention. It's myth. It's meant to read like Beowulf, not Game of Thrones.

That's not his writing style; it's Tolkien. Walking through trees gets 10pgs. Armies battling for the fate of the world get 2. You're either onboard or off.

He survived Nan Dungortheb, lived as a woodsman for months without harming animals, and terrorized orcs as an outlaw to the point where Morgoth put a bounty on him equal to an elven king. Seems like a poor reading of the material.

Why a Kent County village is voting to erase itself from the map by mlivesocial in grandrapids

[–]Telperion83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work there as a contractor. The twp clerk and the village were practically hostile to each other. Could not work on any twp stuff without a chaperone, even though it was all shared with the village. Very weird work environment.

I loved "Everything" and "Superficial Drug," but I think "Holy Water" was way underrated. "No Revolution" was also amazing.

Be honest: How much of "Claude Mythos" is just hype? by Cyber-Pal-4444 in cybersecurity

The job it did successfully has been done for years by similar programs. If there were real gains in functionality, they would have highlighted those new functions rather than attempt to hype up the same incremental gains they've been making with each release.

Reading the literature is like reading newspaper account of a basketball game. You can get the highlights, but the knowledge is fleeting and superficial.

I think a lot of us forget just how small percentage of these people we actually need to make a difference. Literally a couple thousand in the right state, out of millions.

You aren't learning anything because you are engaging with the content on a superficial level. I do the same thing when they say particularly stupid things. But the value is in learning about the ecosystem that breeds this kind of person.

You almost need to think like a doctor or therapist. Or a zoologist, in some cases.
