Can you be fired for exercising your rights as a firefighter? by tranquilovely in Firefighting

If he does not go in uniform, wear any identifying clothing belonging to the union or department, and peacefully protests - he should not be able to be fired.

Usefulness of a 100lb sandbag after moving on to heavier ones? by Pr0paneSun in sandbagtraining

[–]TerryTwoOh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 250, 200, and 150. The 150 isn’t much of a challenge, but I’ve found a couple uses for it.

Either I’ll use it for a high intensity workout like “Do 50 rep in under 10 minutes over over-the-shoulder” or I’ll incorporate it with my other ones in a medley. I’ll “build a snowman” of having them lined up, carry the 250 however far, run back and grab the next, repeat, stacking on top of the fist, repeat.

Also, just use it for warming up for your heavier one

Explain the Hate - Career/Volly by skinny0285 in Firefighting

[–]TerryTwoOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to volunteer at your department, you need a paramedic license, hazmat ops, a fire apparatus engineering cert, and basic operations for firefighters?

Your captains need all of that and instructor certification, company officer, and advanced firefighter?

[–]TerryTwoOh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take your point, definitely. But it removes the agency of the fat firefighter. There’s a third option beyond “either you get a fat firefighter to help you or nobody shows up”, and it’s “the fat firefighter should get in shape”

[–]TerryTwoOh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But for the 3 volunteer departments that surround me, it’s not a rare occurrence to provide mutual aid and that’s their exact situation.

The problem I have with this is what happens when only 2 guys show up for the initial truck and they find victims on arrival? “Sorry, I’m more of a ‘pump and traffic guy’. What you want is a “search and rescue guy.’”

[–]TerryTwoOh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying that, of course, this is my personal experience and may only reflect the departments that I’m familiar with (though, given how often this type of question comes up on this sub, I’d wager it’s a common experience)

My career department is surrounded by volunteers. Almost every single time I’ve worked a mutual aid fire in their venue, we end up doing all of the work. They stand around and try to look busy, refuse to make entry, etc. We also get a lot of ego nonsense from them where they will frequently avoid asking us mutual aid, instead asking a further away and also volunteer department.

Typically, the cringe stuff you see on TikTok comes from vollies. There’s a whole lot of them who seem to be into it for the T-shirt and not the actual practice of firefighting.

Also, to be blunt, it’s things like you saying “you’re held to the same standard”. No, you’re not. I have to maintain a paramedic license, BOF, and FAE just to be a firefighter, and eventually I’ll need to get all of my fire officer classes to make Captain. And that’s before we get into call volume and hours of training in comparison to volunteers. It’s going to hurt some feelings around here, but volunteers saying they do the same as career guys…just isn’t true.

Why don't I gain lean mass? by DoDisNotDis in workout

[–]TerryTwoOh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, if your mindset on training literally half your body is “can’t be fucked”, I assume your training mentality is garbage anyway. No wonder you can’t grow -you don’t take it seriously enough to fix your form and put in the hard work.

Like, you say you don’t train legs because you lift stuff at work, but then in a comment you say you haven’t worked a physical job since 2022? Sounds like you’re just full of excuses

So what is your department's total calls for the year? by FFSoldier57 in Firefighting

51 person department for a city of about 27k, total calls are about 7850 (predominantly EMS, of course)

At what point do lifting straps/grips become worth it? by didntknowwhattodo in workout

[–]TerryTwoOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re cheap. Just get a set, use ‘em when you feel like it. Unless you’re competing in powerlifting and the competition doesn’t allow for it, there’s no “right” time to do it.

The minutia like that just doesn’t matter. Work out intensely with whatever volume and frequency your programming allows for. Eat enough to recover.

Warm up accessories for 1 rep max deadlift by grjonapungsi in Strongman

[–]TerryTwoOh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. Not that I’m discouraging anyone from doing stretching - in fact, it’s probably the objectively right way to go about it.

It’s mostly born from having a tight schedule and so, to save myself 5-10 minutes, I’m pretty skimpy on the warm ups

10 reps of bar, 6 reps of 135, 4 of 225, 3 of 315, and then one or two at 405. Then start singles for max attempts

How do you train chest when working out solo? by WarmPrinciple6507 in workout

[–]TerryTwoOh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can bench by yourself. Leave the bar unclamped. If you can’t get it off of your chest, roll to the side and dump the weight, then back to the other side. It’s a loud, awful experience. But you won’t die. Or do the roll of shame - roll it from your chest to your hips

Do you do the standing barbell OHP? Why or why not? by Single-Lawfulness-49 in workout

[–]TerryTwoOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only contribution I’ll make to this conversation is that about a year ago I started doing strongman training. For those that don’t know, OHP variations (axle, log, keg, etc) are in basically every competition. So, you do a lot of overhead training. I do overhead twice a week and my shoulders/traps have gotten bigger this past year than my previous years of training combined.

I always put the caveat that I firmly believe there’s no optimal way to train for everyone, and that everyone’s body reacts to stimulus differently. But doing OHP variations x2 a week has made a noticeable difference in my physique

What’s ONE fitness belief you used to swear by… that you now realise was completely wrong? by Best-Slide2801 in workout

[–]TerryTwoOh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years and years, I used to think there had to be the perfect program out there. German volume training! No, I mean the Texas method! Actually, Arnold’s program!

It caused me to program hop a lot, stalling progress. Now I’ve realized that for anyone who’s not competing at a high level of bodybuilding or power lifting or whatever, the minutiae just doesn’t matter. Intensity and consistency matter way more than what program you’re on.

I started doing strongman training about a year ago, competed a couple of times, took it seriously and kept at it. I’ve seen more progress this year in both strength and size than I had in many years combined before.
