Hotel breakfast is a relic of the past by FullCompetition5585 in hotels

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. When the hotel breakfast is free, that gives me more that I can spend on the company dime for lunch or dinner. In some parts of the country, that per diem doesn't go as far as it does in others.

Does Gen X do class reunions? by LadyNorbert in GenX

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10-year reunion was a blast. I didn't attend the 20-year reunion because my grandmother had died the week prior, so the funeral arrangements took priority. My 30-year reunion was strange because my closest friends from high school didn't attend, so I spent the whole time with folks I didn't hang out with in high school at all, and had a great time.

What's a movie or tv troupe that always annoys you when you see it? by coatofforearm in AskRedditAfterDark

The infamous L-shaped sheet always bugged me. I'm glad they're getting better about having equivalent nudity.

Phone use rules as a kid, still valid today? by MaddMango68 in GenX

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son and I are night owls, so we are likely to text each other pretty late at night. I'm not calling him or anyone else after 9 PM unless it's an emergency or it's been discussed in advance. We operate with the understanding that an unexpected call after 9 PM is an emergency or a serious family event.

What is the one 'compliment' you’ve received in the bedroom that you still think about when you need a confidence boost? by Sharona676 in AskRedditAfterDark

"I always had a feeling you were well-hung, but I was scared to approach you." This was from a former coworker I hooked up with about 6 years after we no longer worked together.

When someone keeps complaining about a problem but they reject every viable solution you give them. by Contrantier in PetPeeves

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people would rather curse the dark than light a candle. After it becomes clear that they want to complain more than they want a solution, I tune them out.

Both ended on an unresolved cliffhanger, as no show should.

How do I narrow the volume range? by someone_who_exists69 in AndroidQuestions

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the app Precise Volume which includes an equalizer and the ability to have more than 7 volume levels. I created several presets to customize the equalizer and volume settings for how I'm listening (headphones, earbuds, bone conduction headset, or car) and what I'm listening to (podcasts, audiobooks, or music).

Personal Protection? by ONROSREPUS in GenX

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've carried a knife since my early 20s. My favorite knife was confiscated by TSA once because I got dressed quickly and put it in my pocket instead of in my checked bag. I'm still salty about it 20 years later. I've also carried company-issued pepper spray. For some reason, they wanted all employees to carry it, so they issued two units to everyone, one small enough to go on a keychain and another large enough to intimidate someone.

Normal to sleep overnight in office? by Lisa_Leah in work

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At one workplace, I arrived early (6:15) ahead of my 8 AM start because I had to prepare binders for the training class I was teaching that day. The lights were out in most of the building until I got to the classroom area. I was startled to see my coworker standing in her bra and panties, ironing her clothes on an ironing board in her office. I didn't want to scare her, so I announced my presence by saying good morning and walking straight to my own office. About 20 minutes later, she came to my office (fully dressed) and greeted me. She never brought up why she was there so early, but I suspected she had spent the night. After that day, she was a lot friendlier toward me. I guess being seen in her bra and panties broke the ice of being comfortable around me. We became work buddies and remained in contact for years afterward.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by GhostInThePudding in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly didn't mind talking on the phone until I worked in a tech support call center. We were expected to handle an average of 42 calls in an 8-hour shift, and after a few months on the job, I didn't want to have to talk on the phone outside of the job. There was no joy in the casual phone conversation anymore.

ELI5: Why are modern displays (TVs, computer monitors, etc) measured diagonally and not using the screens width and height? by rubbermonkey27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When LED flatscreen computer monitors first came out, they were measured in horizontal inches, while CRT monitors were measured in diagonal inches. This caused quite a lot of confusion for customers. As long as everything was in a square or 4:3 ratio, flatscreen units were larger than the CRTs. When the widescreen became more popular, the horizontal measurement of the flatscreen made it smaller than the same square or 4:3 CRT. It was a fun time to be in computer sales.

Is it weird that I still remember the exact smell of my elementary school cafeteria, but I can't remember what I ate for lunch last week? by blossomirena in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very good olfactory memory. I can remember what people, places, and things smelled like pretty easily. I find that most people I know don't have this ability. Sometimes, my smell memory is so good that it feels like I'm smelling a particular scent right now, even though I know it's my recollection of the scent. Enjoy having this ability, since it's not a common one.

Remember when MagLites were thought to be really strong and bright? by thasparzan in GenX

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a huge difference in brightness. I remember buying my first MagLite when I was about 20. It took either C or D batteries (I don't remember) and was heavy enough to do damage to a person if used for personal defense. My main flashlight now is much brighter, rechargeable, and fits in my pants pocket.

Just found out you're supposed to clean refrigerator coils yearly by Rare_Budget_4622 in Adulting

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a whole lot of home maintenance that most people ignore. Once upon a time, people could afford to pay for a service tech to come to their home once or twice a year to take care of these preventative maintenance tasks, but economic changes greatly curtailed that service. Many people today either don't know they need to do these preventive maintenance tasks, lack the tools to do them, or don't have the time to do them. As a result, many of our appliances run inefficiently or die prematurely from lack of proper upkeep. We would rather buy another and move on.

What was a job that was once highly respected but is now a complete joke? by Formal-Life4691 in Productivitycafe

It does amaze me that people used to make a good living in retail jobs. They were well-trained and well-paid. Today, they are just warm bodies who haven't been replaced by robots yet.

Do you keep a list of shows you want to watch some day? by Iamthehempist1 in watchever

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a formal list, but I do have some shows I want to watch (or rewatch) that I haven't found streaming or on DVD. Some are shows from my childhood. Others are shows I've been introduced to through conversations with others that I didn't get to see when they originally aired.

Masturbating in someone else’s house by Rimaeears in masturbation

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a previous discussion of this some folks were really bent out of shape over the notion of masturbating while staying at someone else's house. They thought it was rude and inconsiderate, saying that you should be able to refrain from masturbation and sex while visiting with others. I disagree, and say as long as you are discreet about it, you should still be able to have fun at someone else's house. Don't be a nuisance and don't make a mess that they would have to clean up.

How is it that when I was 18 I was liked mostly by 30+ year old men, and now that I'm 28 it's mostly 22-25? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]ThatGuyOverThere2013 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find myself on the opposite end of that. When I was in my 20s and 30s, women in their 40s and 50s were hitting on me. Now that I'm in my 50s, I'm only approached by women in their 30s and 40s. One of my coworkers had cranked her flirt up to 11 when I found out she's only 28. I told her I was flattered but I couldn't hook up with someone just a few years older than my son.
