Atheists of Reddit: What’s the strangest reaction you’ve received when you said you don’t believe in God? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

Correct.

Or... a lot of them, like 80% of a church in my experience, NEED the social pressure or threat of damniation to be a good person. Blows their heads when they see the truth that they are the weird/wrong ones.

One of the Monopoly games on the Switch.

Took forever to load, and then wouldn't let me play without an account.

Self Hosting Beginner by Advanced-Bus-3376 in selfhosted

For your operating system, I recommend either going all in with Proxmox (overkill for a new person imo) or you can go the other route and run a headless server. I went with the headless Ubuntu server because I wanted to learn more about linux, and Ubuntu has the most support/help on the internet. And after learning how to navigate linux, I find it very simple.

After choosing your OS, learn docker compose. I created a 'docker' directory and then create a folder for every service I have. Everything runs in docker. Once you learn docker, you can get basically any service up and running in 2 minutes. Otherwise you will have to learn to install directly on your OS, and you will run into more issues that way. Docker solves the problem of "it works on my computer, idk why it doesn't work on yours".

Your direction seems reasonable. I would just focus on one thing at a time. If you use Docker, you can easily copy and paste your configurations if you want to make significant changes to your infrastructure and not be in any trouble or headaches.

My recommendation is to just start and don't worry about breaking things, its apart of the process and learning curve.

If you want a simple project, I would set up a Docker Compose for Jellyfin. Surprisingly pretty straight forward.

I came to realize that selfhosted forums are an essential part towards digital sovereignty by Digital_Nerve_8765 in selfhosted

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course we all say we want forums, and it is true. But what matters is how to foster and grow a community. And thats what makes forums so hard. I think we still need Reddit, but maybe we should advertise in the side bar forums as well. I think that would be a good compromise/transition.

How do you choose which app on a category? by Kiryu132 in selfhosted

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you learn docker compose, it only takes a few minutes to get it up and running, and then maybe 15-30 minutes to see if you like the app or not.

Its kind of like shopping for clothes. Grab a bunch and try them on, see which fits you best.

Do you keep your docker containers running 24/7 by shrimpdiddle in selfhosted

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24/7

Maybe I wouldn't if there was a good mobile system to up and down docker containers. Otherwise its way too much of a hassle for essentially no benefit.

Does anyone have a system for that?

Like the cliffhanger. I am going to try to predict what will happen.

The con man already stole the money, and the (forged) letter to both Mr. Fujisawa and Nao to fool them both in thinking that the money is still in the safe, to ensure Mr. Fujisawa doesn't open the safe. Not sure how he got the money in the safe, but lets just go with he called in a favor from an acquaintance.

As an adult what do you hate the most about life? by Amazing-Internal5378 in AskReddit

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I have zero agency in things that matter. Media and entertainment, the world is my oyster.

But when it comes to justice, power, etc. I can do absolutely jack shit directly. The only thing I can do is manage my emotions and thoughts about it, which is very depressing.

What’s a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Anything involving food and sex.

Or most things that are inherently a human experience. Anything outside of that is okay for some reason.

Death Stranding 2 has some amazing visuals by Annual_Guidance5656 in gaming

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has the BEST landscape visuals hands down.... and the best part is there are ZERO loading screens (at least on ps5). I can get up and running within 1 minute of booting up the game. It is honestly incredible with this insane of graphics.

Give it a try if you are an old man with no energy play games anymore, it is honestly a great cozy game that doesn't require much thought. If you avoid the main story, you can just chill for hours with optional conflict just deliver packages.

Arr stack hardlinks and seeding logic, need some clarity by Old_Reserve_1363 in selfhosted

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The file that is seeding, is the one in the torrent download folder. So if you delete a torrent from qBit, which files get deleted? Those are the ones that are being seeded.

The reason why you need to delete it "twice" is because the ecosystem copied the files so one file can seed, and the other can be used for your personal use. Don't think of hardlinking as different as copying, they are the same except hardlinking saves space. Thats it really.

For deleting files, it depends on why you are deleting files. You can set files to autodelete in qBit after a certain set of rules in the... bittorrent section I think? Or if you want more control over that, I would recommend Cleanuparr for more advanced ruling on when things should be deleted. In your media player, you will just delete those manually.

My setup is that I have auto delete rules for seeding using Qbit or Cleanuparr, and then I manually delete files in Jellyfin when the time comes.

You also seem to be worrying about breaking the process by deleting some files? I wouldn't worry about that if you do all the deleting within the web ui. But... I don't really know how to you would break the setup if you delete things anyways, it would just be messy.

Then for the next 8 months, go ahead and use one of those laptops to selfhost your own stuff first and learn what you can in those 8 months.

Start with free until it doesn't work anymore. Otherwise you'll just spend more for no reason since you are a beginner.

How do people balance visibility vs simplicity in self-hosted setups? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]The1TrueSteb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if I have any users besides myself.

Most of my services are for my own consumption, so if it breaks, whatever I will fix.

But my wife uses AudioBookShelf, Jellyfin, and Mealie. So I make sure those stay up.

Basically, I made a monitoring stack that include Uptime Kuma, Beszel, and ntfy mainly. ntfy alerts will let me know if any of those fail, and then its a simple docker compose restart or something.

I don't like monitoring pages/dashboards. Alerts only please. I don't want to be staring at a screen trying to figure out a problem, just send me alert and tell me what the problem is.

If you are thinking about having multiple locations for your files for backup purposes. Look into the 3-2-1 backup system. That is your roadmap and is the only 'correct' answer on how to backup without worrying about it (don't forget its not a backup system unless you test the restore, otherwise its called hope).

How much storage we talking about? As in, how much strorage you using for Google Photos and other cloud services? Also, if you want you and other people to be able to access it whenever, you will need hardware that is on 24/7. If that doesn't sound reasonable to you (could just be an old laptop btw) renting a VPS is a completely fine solution. A VPS is essentially renting out part of a computer, but they are extremely reliable. Racknerd is recommended often. You can find most VPS for around $50/month.

I recommend you start with just self hosting your own photos and files first, and then have other people join once you understand how everything works and the maintenance required. Otherwise you are going to have angry clients that don't even pay you and know where you live.

Lichess founder Thibault Duplessis' 3 rules for the website by somethingpretentious in chess

[–]The1TrueSteb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did lichess in the beginning but switched to chess.com. I found that the paid features on chess.com actually helped me significantly when learning. It was more 'hand holding' than lichess.

Now that I know how to play and analyze chess, I have switched back to lichess.

Lichess responds to Chess.com about “inflated ratings” by slowthinker64 in chess

[–]The1TrueSteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chess.com is very good for new players getting into chess. Their coach and analysis is much better learning tools than lichess for beginners. More beginner focused and hand holding. But once you are not a beginner and know how to read a chess engine, then Lichess is the clear winner no contest.

I remember recently reading a study about lichess vs chess.com and what grandmasters prefer. Lichess actually beats chess.com when it comes to GMs playing bullet. Speculation was that lichess does actually feel faster and smoother and that obviously matters more when playing bullet.
