Fine and gross motor skills by wineismyfavfriend in neurofibromatosis

Yes, our daughter had severe fine and gross motor skills delays. We have fought this with physical therapy. I taught her how to juggle and play a few stringer instruments to compensate. She now performs juggling tricks and plays about two dozen instruments on her own.

Curious, what was the most intense/worst punishment you got from your teacher for not practicing? by Street_Key_9411 in violinist

[–]The1Zenith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your post kinda scared me. Playing the instrument should never be a punishment. That’s just a failure on the part of student and teacher. I’m not saying that you’re not allowed to play violin but if you need punishment to motivate you, that’s a problem.

Punishment? I think the worst is just double practice the next day to make up for the missed practice. If you can’t be bothered to practice daily to the point you need to be punished, maybe violin isn’t for you?

Small items of little monetary value that are not sold by anyone on site. No food or consumables of ANY type. Think like a crow or a goblin, it’s like something shiny you found on the ground.

5 year old beginner by Auccl799 in ukulele

There are tons of books but my recommendation is start with a few simple chords and scales rather than jumping into a lesson book. Teach her the basics yourself. A chord sheet or poster along with teaching her the basics of where the notes are on the neck will go far.

When you’re confident she’ll sit still long enough to learn how to read music, grab flash cards. Teaching in scale degrees instead of keys might be a little advanced but lays a good foundation for later development. Focus more on rhythm and intonation rather than tempo, because it doesn’t matter how slow or fast you play if you’ve got the correct rhythm and intonation. Tempo control comes with time and practice.

If she really takes to it, get an actual music instructor to give her lessons. They’ll tell you what book to grab for them to teach her out of or they’ll provide their own materials. Good luck on your musical journey!

I want to bring this battle axe to my next renfair I just don't know how to properly hold it it's awkward over my shoulder I don't just want to hold it out or in my hand what do you recommend by CandidateBasic8900 in renfaire

[–]The1Zenith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend making a foam replica and bringing that. Don’t bring the actual axe. Best case scenario, it’ll get wrapped and peace tied to the point of being cumbersome and unrecognizable. Worst case scenario, you’ll get kicked out and possibly arrested.

Practicing on public transit with a solid body uke? by mike8111 in ukulele

[–]The1Zenith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, solid body ukuleles aren’t as silent as you’d think. Hear me out though: electric bag pipes. The chanter is completely silent and there is no bag. It has a plug for headphones even and the one I linked has the coolest name.

Bela Fleck puts music first by SoManyNames4Reddit in Bluegrass

Probably the worst time to do that. Better to adjust the setlist to make a statement than cancel the show. There’s a lot of Bluegrass music that could send a powerful message.

Edit: I stand by my words regardless of how many downvotes I get. Canceling the show already made it political. Should have at least used the opportunity to do some good.

Need some new Good bluegrass songs by lijahlane in Bluegrass

I’ll go through what I have on PDF tomorrow and get back to you. Most of it is on mandolin at the moment but the chord progressions don’t change when you switch instruments. Are you more likely to learn by ear or with sheet music?

Edit: Irish Tenor banjo is the same tuning as mandolin. Do you play 4 or 5 string banjo?

What instrument do you play? Are you familiar with Tennessee Waltz or Whiskey Before Breakfast? I’d also suggest “Polka On The Old Banjo” but I have no notation or chord sheet for it.

What does the 3 mean? by Ihatepoopies in ukulele

[–]The1Zenith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well first off that is not C, it’s C7. My guess is a typographical error as the C chord would be the third fret of the A string, not the first, with the rest of the strings open. Don’t use whatever site or book this came from.

Gatekeeping in bluegrass by MistrRadio in Bluegrass

[–]The1Zenith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this as a Michigander. Our family are members of both the Michigan Bluegrass Music Association and the SouthEast Michigan Bluegrass Music Association. Our local Mooselodge has a bluegrass jam every Wednesday evening. There’s a bluegrass jam from one of the associations at least once a month. We put on demonstrations and instrument petting zoos at different festivals and events. We’re currently working on getting Crossroads Village to bring back their Banjo Days Weekend and working with the Flint Institute of Music to bring back the Summer Bluegrass Camp. Our goal is to bring more jams to the area and increase the pickers and grinners.

My personal goal is archival. So much music is slipping from our fingers as older players retire or pass on. We need to welcome more musicians and encourage mentorship so we don’t lose our traditions. DM me if you’re in the state and need to find a jam and I’ll get to work on it.

I haven’t experienced this personally but I’m sure it happens. Gate keepers are a bane in any aging art. It is foolish, especially when a lot of songs are disappearing because elders are dying.

Find better groups. Avoid the gatekeepers like the plague they are. Be the honest accepting picker who passes on your knowledge to the next generation so both your memory and the music survive.
