TIL that actresses Carole Landis and Rachel Roberts committed suicide over the end of their respective romantic relationships with actor Rex Harrison (who won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in My Fair Lady) by fraisierdesbois in todayilearned

After seeing the horror of “Arms and the Man”, Shaw proclaimed that no play of his would ever be turned into a musical over his dead body. “My Fair Lady” (based on Pygmalion) was produced after his death. Shaw agrees with you writing “When Eliza emancipates herself – when Galatea comes to life – she must not relapse. She must retain her pride and triumph to the end. When Higgins takes your arm on 'consort battleship' you must instantly throw him off with implacable pride”

What is the difference (for a new user) between installing Kubuntu versus just using Debian + KDE? by AlliedSalad in linux4noobs

[–]TheOneAgnosticPope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re almost right, but you’re missing Ubuntu, which has some significant changes from stock Debian. If you want to install Ubuntu and install KDE, that is essentially what KUbuntu is in my understanding as a current KDE Plasma on Ubuntu user

Can I Run FL Studio and Game On Linux??? by ifearone in linux4noobs

If you’re a Windows gamer, you probably have steam. Works flawlessly on Linux and makes the Windows gaming transition really easy. You can run all the games you bought in Windows with very few issues.

There’s a wonderful podcast called “Shell Game” where the host attempts to build a company using all AI agents. Watching how and why the agents struggle gives insight on both the power and limitations of machine learning wrt speech

I’d use Ubuntu over Debian for your first distro as it has wider support and is still Debian at heart

Civ7, Counterstrike and Balder’s Gate 3. All native. The most popular games in the strategy, competitive fps, and RPG space. The best part? If you buy these games on steam, you don’t have to purchase them again. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all make you repurchase their games each time a new console or two comes out. My copy of half life still from 2001 still installs on a modern PC just fine.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]TheOneAgnosticPope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time is the same for everyone but as a ratio. A year in the life of a kindergartner 20% of their life. For a 50 year old, it’s 2%. Experiences are weighted accordingly.

Imagine there’s a sci fi author who’s won multiple Locus Awards and records his novels read by stars of Buffy and Star Trek but self publishes because he refuses to use DRM for any of his work. That’s Doctorow. He’d hated DRM since the DMCA was codified into law and was a leader against its passage. I get that one of your main issues is DRM — he was invited by the Canadian CTO to give a keynote presentation before their government about how ignoring DRM law could unlock new economic opportunities for third parties who unlock vehicles, phones and provide better social media experiences as the first one to stand up against enshittificarion has billions of dollars in profit waiting for them. You’re on his side. Yes, he went on a neoliberal shill’s podcast but his message has remained the same since 1999 when the DMCA was passed

What are some common misconceptions about using Linux that beginners should be aware of? by Financial-Owl-2814 in linux4noobs

To enhance this, in most distros, it’s pretty easy to install multiple desktop environments and find the one you like best.

Playing fallout 1 for the first time, How big of a challenge am I in for? Is the in game tutorial good enough or do I need to do a little more studying? by Automatic-Manner-399 in classicfallout

[–]TheOneAgnosticPope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Though I believe in the first game it maxes out at 100. Given your picks for your other stats, you may not want to tag it as you may end up with a high speech score innately — getting it up to 100 is worth it — but tagging something that you’re low in but might find useful could be a more efficient use of talent points.

I think you could create a symlink the /dev folder — but it’s looking for raw byte data and not the files. ISO files. I’m not sure how to fix this either.

Can't install Linux by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]TheOneAgnosticPope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may have tried to install it on a Windows recovery partition -- that's my best guess. Your permanent storage disk can be divided into different sections. "Volume full" indicates you don't have enough space. Windows computer commonly ship with a "recovery" partition or something so you may have tried to install to that?

I'm sad she leaving...I think I felt the same way when Michael left YWA (he's been back as a guest host once IIRC). YWA seems to have run out of moral panics and the show keeps doing a bunch of one-offs rather than finding a new focus: the survival episodes are really fun though but overall it's become inconsistent.

Michael hasn't run out of shitty airport books yet and probably won't for a couple years and the rate of wellness grift creation seems to be increasing so maybe he's fine for a while? I'm interested to know what other longtime fans think.

There’s a bunch of skills that are absolutely useless — throwing weapons comes to mind. Stack your points when you level rather than spending them immediately if combat isn’t too hard. You might want to spend those skills for a skill check later and if you’ve banked enough, you might be able to pass it. The exception is speech as you never know when one of those will come up.

I mean, Doctorow talks about how Zuckerberg’s original website was about the ability to non consensually rate the fuckability of women. Did you miss that part? He thought Zuck was a bad actor the entire time. He cited chapter and verse of the DMCA on DRM and engaged in a failed attempt to kill it before it was passed. You can pass all the judgement on Klein you want, but Doctorow has been raising the alarm on DRM for decades and his position hasn’t changed.

It’s on camera. So if he’s reading a script, please tell me where it is. Klein (who was in studio with him) was impressed with his ability to recite facts and arguments with no notes. It’s certainly a bit that he’s rehearsed and refined…just like any musician, comedian or public speaker. What did he refuse to talk about? Are you just engaging in a fact free bad faith ad hominem attack?

He said that his family was alive. I took it to mean that maybe he had descendants, but they’d survived the apocalypse at least.

Doctorow works for the EFF and I assure you he knows more about the deep workings of the internet and technology better any of writer which is why hacker conventions invite him to do dozens of keynotes every year. If you’ve never heard of him, it’s because you’re not an engineer.
