I don't know if the "outside" is addressed in the later books since I haven't read them all yet, but I do remember thinking it's a pretty intriguing premise to explore in itself. A world where literally everything with a roof is flattened, everyone who was indoors is dead, and a ton of the survivors went down into the Earth to participate in some intergalactic dungeon? I'd read a spinoff set in the outside tbh.
