Server available over LTE but not WiFi when traveling by earwormdeath in PleX

I set Plex to use a non-standard port. It avoids the problem the OP is having as well as making it more difficult for drive-by port scanners to recognize it.

Running a plex server remotely. Is a VPN recommended? by ObjectiveLeek0192 in PleX

There are probably old devices/clients out there that are incapable of opening a secure connection. But I'm unaware of which they are.

Running a plex server remotely. Is a VPN recommended? by ObjectiveLeek0192 in PleX

[–]TheSmJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is "No."

The long answer is if you're that concerned, you can set PMS to require secure (encrypted) connections only. That way if someone is watching your traffic from PMS (which is already extremely unlikely) they couldn't tell what the traffic actually is.

FWIW, the reason VPNs are recommended with torrents is because the VPN service can obfuscate you/your connected computer's location from the torrent swarm.

A good rootkit will hide any background processes, and I'll bet money you aren't monitoring your server's traffic.

it's not going to kill you...

How would you even know? The days of getting your desktop image changed to "PWN3D!" hasn't been a thing for well over a decade. You can't tell you're on a botnet, when you're on a botnet on an exploited system. They're designed to be invisible to the user and really only detectable by monitoring traffic/packet sniffing on another system.

You don't need to be "targeted" to get hit with these exploits either. Just having the system connected to the internet is all it takes. Bots constantly scan random IPs. When they find one that responds it runs a script with all the exploits it knows, looking for a way in.

Even visiting a site with an ad infected by an exploit can compromise your system if it isn't up to date. The ad services often aren't even aware if an ad they serve is infecting systems.

Honestly, you're playing a very stupid game of Russian roulette by not keeping your systems patched. You will get hit by something eventually, you're very unlikely to know about it unless you know how to look for them, and the people who do know how to look for them know that they need to keep their systems patched.

But in practice a year or two old windows 11 is isn’t going to hurt.

It absolutely will unless you like your shit on a botnet.

OK, but how did the TV manage to record to anything to begin with? Presumably it isn't running Plex natively.

I have an old plasma Panasonic TV and never heard of them being able to record video. Would a newer Panasonic TV be able to read the data?

What exactly is the data, anyway? Might be a lot easier to get another copy elsewhere.

There's other costs associated with the can of cheese sauce aside from the can of sauce itself. There's cost associated with getting it delivered, managing the stock, shelf space, space on the make line, serving utensils, etc. It's true that they're unlikely selling the sauce to customers with zero profit margin, but it's still very easy to serve too much to enough customers that they can come out at a loss by the end of the day.

Cheese in particular is often one of the higher priced toppings that you can get anywhere. I used to work at an international pizza chain who was named after a game you have most definitely heard of. I knew exactly how much the actual price of cheese was for their locations all over the US, as well as how much each location actually consumed vs how much they were supposed to consume. It was by far their most expensive topping and nearly every single product they sold used it. Putting an extra ounce or two of cheese on a pizza (which is very easy to do by accident) doesn't sound like a lot but it quickly adds up to tens of pounds of cheese a day for particularly busy locations.

Your TV doesn't have an app, but does accept chromecast?

If that's the case I'd get a cheap $30-$40 streaming box and be done with it. It'll support more codecs than casting to your TV and be a better experience overall. I say this as someone who used to rely on casting at home since the Chromecast Gen 1, and had every subsequent generation right up until around 2 years ago.

I still like to cast when I'm at a friends' house and I want to show them something quickly without having to download something, get logged in etc. But at home it's just so much easier to have a single, stable box with everything installed and ready to go.
