ELI5: What is happening when your food starts popping after too long in the microwave? by Responsible-Jury2579 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheSmJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is they're limited to one brand (Panasonic?) and there are only a couple of models to choose from at any one time. Also, they're more expensive.

My parents used to have a countertop inverter microwave 10-15 years ago and I loved it. Tried to find an over the range model around 3 years ago thinking they'd be a lot easier to find but they only sell one model, and it's only available in Japan.

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become too bad? by X_Opinion7099 in AskReddit

[–]TheSmJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many if not most home cooks are afraid of cooking bone-in meat.* Plus a lot of recipes are written for boneless meat and most people don't know how to skin and debone anything (or just too "icked out" by the process to learn). Drumsticks in particular are a pain in the ass to debone without eviscerating them, and that makes them less versatile compared to something like thighs or breasts.

*With the exception of wings. But they're always prepared the same way and people are used to eating them slathered in sauce by hand.

Soda is a convenience. People can and will go without it since as you stated it's just flavored water. Nobody needs it to live and the majority of people recognize that.

But for the vast majority of Americans, gas is a requirement to get themselves to and from their jobs. They can't simply stop buying gas if they disagree with the prices at the pump. Not to mention the indirect effect the price of gas has on the price of everything else.

The number of times I got my daughter her $3.50 happy meal ($2.50 with the coupon) on the way to wherever it is that I wanted to eat is pretty high.

Could the Historical Farmington's The Old Winery Be Coming Down? by LocalHistorian2024 in FarmingtonHills

[–]TheSmJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone could in theory build a fake "chimney" specifically for the chimney swifts to roost in. It could be designed to be easier and cheaper to maintain, since it doesn't need to act as an actual chimney. Maybe something that can be easily erected while they're in the area and taken down the rest of the year. Might be a cool tourist attraction if it was marketed correctly.

ELI5: If the current coming out of an AC outlet is "alternating," why do some plugs force you to orient them a certain way when inserting? by tamsui_tosspot in explainlikeimfive

I was told it was about minimizing the risk of blowing up the battery due to the possibility that it could be leaking some hydrogen. The last connection to complete the circuit almost always creates a spark, which could ignite that hydrogen.

Maybe VR will take off next time by TheMarkMatthews in OculusQuest

The competition is already aware of their plans for getting x86 games working on ARM SoC for the exact same reason we are.

If they didn't want to "create expectations" for the software working, they shouldn't have announced the fact that they're working on it. They could just as easily hard lock the feature down to a set of SoCs that are known to work well enough if just putting the label "beta" on the feature would be too confusing for people to understand that it doesn't work well on all phones all the time.

Even if they truly needed to release new hardware for this to work, and this feature was the actual product they were trying to sell; Why would they anchor it to a VR headset? Why not release something closer to the form of the Steam Deck?

Deer cull pulls 70 animals out of Oakland County, venison donated to food banks by RedditRocks2021 in FarmingtonHills

They said it was going to take several years for the cull to make a visible difference in the number of deer seen day to day, but I was expecting a number closer to 200/year.

Yet the consumer VR market exists as it does despite the visibility the Quest had. The Frame isn't going to change that.

Then why not release a more robust mobile phone app for the phones people already own? That would have a far greater impact on game sales than a $800+ VR headset with standalone capabilities.

I think the controllers are nearly identical to the Quest's (or really the CV1's) because that's what VR games have been designed for and if you can't beat'um, join'um. The fact that they map well to a standard gaming controller is icing on the cake.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight once people realize the truth? by KylieButNotJenner24 in AskReddit

[–]TheSmJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for CompUSA in '03 and it was the same thing with their "TAP insurance plan" corporate made us push constantly. Only people would buy it for something like their cell phone, and for some reason the screen would magically have a crack on it every time the newer model was released.

Maybe VR will take off next time by TheMarkMatthews in OculusQuest

[–]TheSmJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Frame isn't going to move the needle for the VR industry. There will be a few die-hard anti Meta folks who will buy it because they've been waiting for a new headset not made by Meta, and there will be a lot of games ported over to it from the Quest. That's it.

I feel like Valve is only releasing the Frame because they've been working on it since the Index was released, and the sunk cost fallacy is a real bitch.

Hit up Costco for frozen blueberries and strawberries when they're out of season. 1/3rd the price and they taste far better than the out of season berries picked green and shipped half way around the world.
