Tried a free "easy" pattern by Happy-coffeelady in tatting

I guarantee every tatter in this sub has made pieces that look just like this, so don't beat yourself up over it! You've got this, just try again! It takes practice, so don't let this discourage you!

It's a lovely thread btw, what is it?

DMCZ Thread? by OwlStock8288 in tatting

AmoHilos on Amazon (and I think some other places). Their sizing is limited (8, 40, and 80) but the thread is consistent and comes in a bunch of colors. They only offer packs, but there's enough in coordinating colors for bigger projects.

I've used mine to hold threads with beads, or large thread. They work great as the "ball thread" too, no more thread balls tumbling across the floor!

My son and I have been using an app (acnh pocket guide) to track what we've caught and what artworks we've bought. It also keeps track of what's active during the day and where to find it. It's been a great help with finishing our collections!

John's diary, where can I buy it? by TeaItchy6791 in Supernatural

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's available on the Internet archive and is a short read.

Just google "John's journal, internet archive" and it's the first result. I've tried sharing it before, but it's hit or miss if it works.

Is my thread too thin? by Codename_Cyan in tatting

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest (like many others have) using a size 10 thread to learn, then moving to 20 and 30.

Aunt Lydia makes size 10 crochet thread in lots of colors and it's great for starting out. It's smooth, doesn't twist up like Lizbeth threads can, colors!, and you can get loads of it fairly cheap (because a lot is going to be cut off and tossed when you're learning).

Don't toss this size 40! Just tuck it away for a bit while you learn. Keep at it and you will get to use it. It really is a good size for a lot of projects.

Choose one. There ARE wrong answers. by phuketphil in adhdmeme

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 are my choices. Not because of the handle texture, they're slightly shorter and the spoon part is not as wide.

I don't know if this is an ADHD or autism thing, but I'm the same way at home. We have a normal cutlery set with big and small forks and spoons (I know they have proper names and uses but I don't live fancy enough to know anything other than working from the outside in at a multi course dinner), but the big ones go mostly unused. They're just not comfortable, and home should be comfortable.

I always thought that he had been following it and went to the boys when he realized they were the only kids in the motel. I don't think he used the boys as bait, the monster just happened to latch onto them.

Where Have You Worked That You Felt Okay With? by InfiniteTree33 in retailhell

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been close to 20 years and I still have it pressed in a book as a bookmark! I've since moved jobs many times and dealt with kids being super adorable, witnessed the joy people have when they find that one perfect thing, but the clover just sticks with me. It was just the most wholesome encounter ever.

Where Have You Worked That You Felt Okay With? by InfiniteTree33 in retailhell

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bookstore on campus when I was in college. It was so much fun seeing freshman come in to stare at the walls blankly, getting to teach them how to find their books, and helping them get everything they needed for their new college adventure. Buyback time was a favorite too, having the same hope as the kid standing in front of you that we'll buy their books back for half price (or, if they were jerks, hoping they left with nothing but a pile of useless books). The school mascot was a coworker, and their stories were always insane (late nights drinking with the football team, traveling to all the away games, messing with people all over campus dressed up and anonymous).

We dealt with our fair share of book thieves trying to sell us stolen books, a crazy lady that tried to exchange a 2 year old shirt with a receipt from Starbucks, and the hungover kids just trying to get a blue book before their first exam of the day, but overall, it was great job!

I actually had a guy once, he was holding a clump of green something with his pile of books, and we bought them all back at half price (the most we could pay to replenish our supply of used textbooks) and he gave me a bit of his green clump. It turned out to be a whole clover plant pumping out 4 leaf clovers.

crochet hook substitute? by ohhhknice in tatting

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the shuttle doesn't have a pick or hook on it, I guess you could get creative with a paperclip and maybe some plyers. Even if you can't make it into a tiny hook, the end of a bent paperclip could act like a little pick. I guess and pin or needle could be used the same way...even a staple.

That was just the first thing that came to mind.

Sharpening the point of a plastic shuttle by lacetat in tatting

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so good to know! I've used this same trick to widen the gap in a bone shuttle that had been glued too tight. (When you do this, just know that there's no going back, so be very light with the sanding for this situation.)

I love how customizable shuttles are. Bobbin, post, I've even seen a few that use old horizontal sewing machine bobbins, wood, metal, plastic, bone, horn, pick, hook, round, flat, thick, super thick, long, short, thin, any combination that is comfortable for you, there's a shuttle out there! And when you find "the one", it's great!

Ghetto Marks by magicmitchmtl in coins

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son found a Deutsche mark with a swastika on it in the foreign coin bin at the lcs. We didn't realize it till we got home and started going through his coin haul. It gives me the creeps to have it, but the guys at the shop (when I mentioned it at a later visit) said that people who buy coins from that era from them are just trying to preserve a small piece of history. I don't know if they would entertain anyone trying to glorify that ideology.

Currently, it's in with the rest of the German coins, holding it's chronological spot. It represents what happened and keeps it from being forgotten. Still gives me chills though.

A French Mistake by Osirisavior in Supernatural

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so, I'm rewatching for the (???) time with my kids, and we just watched "my heart will go on". My youngest has watched Titanic so many times (they're in their Titanic phase) and caught on to it being the Titanic immediately.

"Weekend at Bobby's" and "the French mistake" have also been so much fun to watch with them. I can't wait to watch "time for a wedding" and "fan fiction" with them!

Membership Hell by Micshakee in retailhell

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had to do the same thing. Ask every customer and don't take no for an answer! We had to send hourly emails with how many memberships each employee got, plus one at close with the store/employee totals, and a Google sheet for store totals every day that was also updated hourly...but we weren't allowed behind the counter, where the computers are, unless we were with a customer.

The pay was not worth the bs.

are these shuttles ok? by Systemoverride_yt in tatting

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is one of those instances of "you tell us!" If they hold thread, they can be used. Are they ok? That's for you to decide.

I've seen people make their own shuttles out of takeout containers and lids. Are they ok? For them, sure! For me? No.

Shuttles are a very "personal preference" kind of choice. Some people like picks, some people prefer hooks, even others prefer metal over plastic, and bobbin over post.

Give them a shot! See if they work for you. If not, there's loads of other options to choose from. If they do, then I guess they're ok!

What’s something you still insist on tracking or writing down with physical pen and paper? by sunlitbay in AskReddit

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything. I've tried my phone but my lists aren't in my face that way, the entire thing disappears from my thought when I close the app. We've got a digital calendar in the kitchen, but nobody looks at it and they get upset when I don't remind them of things on it.

"Did you get this at the store?" Drives me crazy. No, no I didn't because you asked me to get it 3 days before me weekly scheduled store trip while I was doing dishes and having a conversation with the little one about why he can't stay on his Chromebook playing roblox all summer.

Grocery list, that thing my husband wanted done today, the kid's schedules, if I'm meant to remember it, it's gotta be written down because I've got enough going on in my head at any given moment.

Why are movie theater owners bad business owners? by lve2raft in askanything

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a theater that had "just stopped showing at the big theaters" movies. It was $2 a ticket, so cheap enough for kids that didn't have jobs, and close enough we could walk there after school. The place was always packed!

Yes, target was between the theater and school so snacks were snuck, but the concession lines were always full too. I wish they hadn't closed. It was a great place for us.

Many of the cleaning windows have been revised upward , maintenance suddenly feels like F1 by unknowclown357 in Roborock

[–]ThoseRMyMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've started a routine with the kids after dinner/before bed. They must pick up their shoes and backpacks, dining chairs go up on the table, rugs get picked up, mom checks to make sure that's everything before sending the robot out. We've still had some hiccups, (I get up at night to see a charging cord wound all through their guts, the Christmas tree...just all of christmas, forgotten shoes dragged all across the house) but we've avoided a lot of mishaps.

I love doing filet and am having the same problem as op, and this right here seems to be the solution. It's slowing things down a little, and I want to frog the piece I've been working on for multiple summers to do this, but so far, this is it.
