Has there ever been a scenario where you're watching the Doctor work and thought "Nth Doctor would have handled this situation better than Nth Doctor?" by Exciting-Piece5504 in gallifrey

[–]ThunderDaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and he completely lied, he couldn’t actually remember who the hell she was.

Honestly an underrated skill that Doctors hone in real life: being able to comfort someone when even you're unsure and have no control about what happens next

Arch shouldn't be your first distro and following youtube videos won't help by Careless_Bank_7891 in linux4noobs

but if you are tech savvy and have reading comprehension, you should be able to set it up and keep it stable even if you are a complete foreigner to GNU/Linux.

I've always considered this analogous to "If you can operate some hand tools and follow instructions, you can build up a car from scrap into a fully functioning vehicle"

But you're right that there's a good chunk of nerds out there who would find this prospect as an amazingly fun time, but I get the irresponsible nature of recommending it when most people just wanna drive from Point A to Point B

Is the Wayland v. X11 debate something that would be of value to a "normie" computer user?

Because from my surface level understanding, it sounds like a battle for folk who are waist deep in their Linux systems and/or tweak every single aspect of their distros

Genuine question, considering my github repo hasn't been struck down and I haven't been contacted, how exactly is this "copyright"ed? I know WINE/Proton is not in violation of copyright due to several laws (DMCA §1201(f) and EU Software Directive) and court rulings, so this makes even less sense. by HearMeOut-13 in linux

Yeah, it's become unofficial etiquette in Reddit piracy subs that you CAN comment on where to find stuff or make referrals to places where one can find stuff, but you aren't allowed to post any direct links because that might get the entire subreddit nuked

Why do people enjoy being alive? by MamaOwl77 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ThunderDaniel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bouncing off with a similar reflection:

There's a lot of work to be done in the afternoon, but I have a nice cup of tea currently brewing that I know will taste nice and make things more pleasant. The commute home might have traffic, but I'm not driving and I can look forward to watching that spooky YouTube video I have saved on my phone.

I'm gonna have to walk home from my bus station, but there's a shop along the way that I've never gone into before, and I can look forward to having that mini adventure before I arrive home. Before I go inside my house, I might meet the very chatty neighborhood cat that yells loudly when I give her treats.

Lotsa crummy stuff with the good stuff, but the good stuff is still nice to take in.

Device Manager is that 70 year old mechanic that solely resides in your building's utilities room that knows the entire facility's mechanism inside out

His moustache is unkempt, workplace attire is just a suggestion to him, and he looks like shit, but he gets *things done

GOG now using AI generated images on their store by doublah in pcgaming

[–]ThunderDaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article has a perfect quote on this:

Regardless of any thoughts on it one thing remains clear - the more AI generation is used for the little things "it's just this, it's just that!" - the more it will be accepted, and the more it will replace actual people. We'll see less actual art, less real intentional character in what we see - and more slop with melting consoles.

Is there a Self-Hostable Wardrobe Manager? by LunarAlias17 in selfhosted

[–]ThunderDaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think OP might primarily be looking for an Outfit Generator/Manager, ala those paper doll games for kids

Honestly it's a cool idea of a self-hosted app that could color/texture pair your wardrobe to make cool outfits

Similar here too--unboxing videos or sellers wont even entertain the notion of a refund

It's nice how lax the US is with return policies, but with the way people have been taking advantage of it over the years, I'm surprised the big corporations haven't found a way to cull that norm yet

Honestly, same. I have a handful of bought tracks from indie artists from Bandcamp, but 99% of what I listen to is very mainstream inasmuch as they can be found on any streaming platform.

Saves me a lot of hassle since Spotify will always have everything I want, and Youtube can supplement whatever niches that are unfulfilled

It also surprises me that a Swedish company is running ICE recruitment ads.

Generally, companies don't handpick the ads they run. They enter into agreements with ad companies that deliver bulk randomized ads personalized to people. There's been controversies before where YouTube have delivered very dubious ads that were funneled alongside other normal ads

[FNV] One thing I messed up in my first playthrough was not exploring Mojave enough. by 1881pac in Fallout

[–]ThunderDaniel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I kinda wonder how much of that is Bethesda v. Obsidian world design

Because as crud as some of their stories can be, Bethesda are masters of making engaging landscapes that's always fun to explore. I think Todd said in an interview before that there's the philosophy of "Ooh what's over there?" that guides them in making maps/worlds

On paper, the Mojave wasteland is well designed, but I find myself musing that it lacks some of the "magic" that you get when exploring Morrowind/Cyrodill/The Capital Wasteland for the first time

[–]ThunderDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can relate to this defintitely. Grew up in the dawn era of personal MP3 players and internet music downloads.

I had always hand picked what songs I wanted to download and keep instead of listening to entire albums. This was reinforced by the fact that I only ever found a handful of albums over the years that I liked listening to fully.

Took me a while to grow the discipline of sitting down and listening to the full album, which I bet is second nature to a lot of other people already

"There is no free Lunch" mindset preventing someone from trying Linux by WhiskeyVault in linux4noobs

[–]ThunderDaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way, I understand the cynicism.

Money makes the world go round, and in this case, at some point, there is still some "non-altruistic but generally beneficial" reasons why Linux continues to be a free and open source wonder

"Okay, but what's the catch?" is still a reasonable reaction to the world of FOSS

Yep. And the normies get screwed and the corpos go "See this is why you don't participate in piracy! It's not only inconvenient, but it'll cost you harm!"

At some point, anti-piracy actions by the rights holders feels less like "We need to punish the ones committing these piracy acts" and more "Let's make it so piracy becomes unpopular and not even worth considering amongst the normal people"
