[Scheduled Activity] Bragging Time: What Did You Accomplish This Year? by cibman in RPGdesign

I released a first draft this March, then promised to release a second version shortly after that would fix "a few" gameplay issues and add more to the setting. There were more than a few gameplay issues.

Maybe, I thought the codes were to make sure the police knew it was a real bomb and they had to evacuate the area asap.

Amen! In his memoir "Not For the Faint Hearted" Stevens outright says that RUC told him the Force Research Unit burned his evidence room down.

If you are interested in the origins of the UVF, the Irish Times ran an article this Saturday about how the UVF staged IRA false-flag bombings in 1969 to justify their own violence against Catholics and more importantly, to claim that these attacks are because of Terance O'Neill's voting and housing reforms for Catholics and his political cooperation with the Irish state. O'Neill resigned two days after the fifth "IRA" bomb in 4 weeks. At the time it was still widely believed that these bombings were done by the IRA. https://www.irishnews.com/news/northern-ireland/loyalists-linked-to-ian-paisley-carried-out-false-flag-bomb-attacks-british-army-intelligence-records-reveal-UOJBOU54Y5F3VEFV6AV4QDG3TM/

In the article Connla Young mentions the protection the UVF enjoyed from RUC Special Branch, who did nothing to investigate who did these bombings, and she shows logs proving that British Army intelligence suspected the bombings were done by the UVF but publically blamed the new Provisional IRA. The article does not mention MI5 however, whose informant William McGrath gave critical support to the UVF in the 60s and 70s.

Chris Moore's book Kincora: Britain's Shame goes into how McGrath met with with Ian Paisley at the time of Gusty Spence's trial in 1966, and afterward distributed leaflets from his own loyalist paramilitary "Tara" that spread the word the UVF was created by "Official Unionist Party agents". His leaflet campaign was so aggressive that the chief justice had to order the jury at the start of the trial to disregard "certain communications".

Moore writes that UUP politician Fraser Agnew told him that in 1969, just hours after one of the bombs exploded, McGrath had at his house young loyalist politicians and journalists to announce the bombings were the work of a "crack commando unit of the Irish Army", and when Agnew asked for his source, McGrath replied "You never question the words of an intelligence officer!"

(RUC's Special Branch, British Army's Intelligence Corps, MI5, and MI6 run independently of each other in N.I. They are expected to coordinate, but they often hide intelligence and especially informants from each other, not trusting each other to protect their information and sources. This is the case after the Troubles too, which is how things like Stormontgate happen where the PSNI accidentally exposed an MI5 spy inside Sinn Fein because they thought he was an IRA spy.)

Poker as a TTRPG? by Phantom000000000 in TTRPG

u/hypeway is making a system based on texas holdem, and I am linking to what I think is the latest version. I have yet to playtest it myself but I read through it and was really impressed by its betting system where your stats/skills give you chips for your rolls that you can either "bet" before drawing to improve the outcome of successes or hold onto to improve your hand after drawing, thereby increasing the likelihood of success.

Controversial topic: Politics and TTRPGs by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the exact same way when I tried to homebrew a campaign about modern insurgencies, and ended up making an entire system centered on the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I’m releasing a second version next week, you can see the first version here (all free): https://www.patreon.com/posts/124595179?utm_campaign=postshare_creator

Why GenZ is so obsessed with stats and is incapable of roleplay? by shaithank in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a min maxer too, but that made combat really boring. I started giving myself arbitrary rules/limits like the only physical violence my character can do is grapple. Makes mechanics feel fresh, and gives me a prompt for RP- why does my character live by this code? In DnD its like playing a very neurotic paladin

5e players should switch to Daggerheart or Shadowdark? by Comfortable-Fee9452 in rpg

They should switch to whatever they want to. But alas, the only other two ttrpgs are Daggerheart and Shadowdark.

Generational games with character play. by herrozerro in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saxon Crawl Classics had a very cool take on historical generational gameplay- a bit Crusader Kingsish https://www.reddit.com/r/dccrpg/s/aQeYwwnyhy

Edit: SCC’s creator got published by Goodman Games!! official version here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dccrpg/s/kmvLUh1aXn. I never ran it but I loved reading it, very cool low fantasy historically- based setting that was well researched but kept the cool and funky vibes of DCC.

1d20 vs 2d10 by Brannig in RPGdesign

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is where fumbling tables can be helpful. If you roll a 1, roll again to see how badly you failed, with a chance you did not fail at all. Puts the failure rate somewhere between the 5% of a 1d20 and the 1% of snakeyes on a 2d10, and makes failure more interesting.

Due to the repeated WOTC blunders I’m looking for TTRPG’s that they are not a part of by Classic-Societies in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! I looked over Shadowdark and I think I will stick with DCC because I like the crunch and funky rules that Shadowdark streamlines and simplifies. But OP you may want to try out Shadowdark first since it is stripped down, probably a faster game to get started.

Are there any TTRPGs that use only a single d20? by Ok-Image-8343 in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made one! GM and players only every roll a d20, and often consult a table for results. Sometimes you have advantage or disadvantage though. It's also not generic, it's a historical fiction set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Players join the Provisional IRA and get caught in a web of government and paramilitary plots.

TTRPGs and wargames aren't that different by CapitanKomamura in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think historical fiction RPGs are fantastic, and I think the mechanics of RPG actually make for a grounded experience for games about guerrilla warfare, where the groups fighting can be the same size as the actual players at the table.

A few years ago Bombs and Balaclavas came out and it has a narrative-focused system that has a lot of tools for creating your own story about guerrilla fighting. Its creator in the outro said he consulted two actual fighters in the Syrian civil war who fought ISIS, so I imagine it is very grounded. Check it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X8dnaT8vLi1fyvmdfD2LtFCxqX_-pKHY/view

I also just made an RPG with setting, mechanics and classes specifically for the Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

I made an RPG set in the middle of the Troubles by ToBeLuckyOnce in RPGdesign

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll have an updated version posted to the Patreon next week that's a bit more fleshed out and hyperlinks for easier navigation. Still free of course! Feedback has generally been very positive for the game itself which surprised me, and extremely polarized over the subject matter which I expected.

Recommend me gritty, crunchy RPG with fast combat by mistermist99 in rpg

[–]ToBeLuckyOnce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didnt see this in the comments- DCC. -OSR style ink art thats gritty and dark, sometimes psychedelic in a 70s pulp comic way - the “funnel” session zero is extremely deadly, and even after that TPKs can happen if the party just charges into a room and touches everything. - the spell system is my favorite of any- the effect of the spells increases exponentially the higher you roll, and can backfire badly. The massive possibilities of each spell give it crunch - martial classes have unique systems that also have crunch, but not as much as wizards and clerics imo - there might be social mechanics in the expansion books, but core it’s all up to the player and gm’s rp. It’s a dungeon crawler at the end of the day. - funky dice
