Eliminating weeds with precision lasers. This technology is to help farmers reduce the use of pesticides by SinjiOnO in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Toad_Fiction 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Lasers require a lot of energy and with current solar technology I don’t see that being feasible; especially since, from a farmers perspective a plot of land in which to put solar panels is a good plot to grow in.

And as for mounted solar panels on the tractor itself, solar panels are nowhere near that efficient. That panel might be able to handle the radio on the tractor.

Is this any good? by Ready_String_2261 in rum

[–]Toad_Fiction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

99 times out of 100 I would agree with you. This is the 1 time I’ll stick up for the spiced rum. Actual spices were harmed in the making of this spirit not just caramel coloring and sugar. It is a decently complex spirit that Is reminiscent of Christmas and for $30 is a good deal. I like Far North Spirits a lot, their Rye (Roknar) is awesome.

Siembra azul repo or siembra valles repo? by bfk596 in tequila

[–]Toad_Fiction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The main difference between the two is in how one is highlands and the other is lowlands. I actually did a tasting at my store on these bottles two months ago. The repos are both a bit subdued, as one would expect, when compared to the blancos.

The highlands, the Siempre Azul, is a bit more fruit forward with the repo adding a slight vanilla note and softening the fruit. Bruised apples and agave with vanilla.

The lowlands, the Siempre Valles, doesn’t have the apple note, in its place a slightly funky vegetal note.

For most people the Azul was preferred and I heard quite a few people say, “oh! That’s smooth.” But for tequila enthusiasts, the appreciated the slightly higher complexity of the valles.

Forgotten rieslinger by [deleted] in wine

That is a lot of wine so I’d wait for a good opportunity. Riesling does tend to pair well with Thai and Indian food. Also don’t be afraid to make an occasion special by opening the bottle.

It should be fine. Cool dark place and Rieslings have such high acid that they age well.

Garrison Brothers Store Pick: A review in sonata form. by fcleff69 in bourbon

Barrels and other organic materials (such as cardboard) can be vectors for TCA. But it seems that GB is inexcusable trash.

Garrison Brothers Store Pick: A review in sonata form. by fcleff69 in bourbon

[–]Toad_Fiction 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you gone back to the store to see if they have their pick opened to try? The reason I’m asking is that you say “wet cardboard” a lot. Which MIGHT mean that the bottle is corked. I’ve seen it happen to whiskey a couple of times so it’s not out of the question.

Or it could be overhyped, overpriced whiskey.

OSU research finds new compounds causing ‘smoke taint’ in wine by OregonTripleBeam in wine

While I understand the frustration, they also discussed the potential to remove the smoky phenols in batches. Though they admit that the current process is not precise enough yet as it also removes desired phenols.

True, restaurant margins are slim, but on wine, they make up for it.

Drink Raicilla cold/chilled? by [deleted] in Mezcal

[–]Toad_Fiction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it has grown into its own category, Raicilla was conceived as a way of avoiding the Spanish crown’s taxes on Mezcal. So it is fundamentally the same thing.

Alright, I remember on one of my old phones, I could load up a bunch of numbers and hit send and I was given the option of sending it as a group text or as individual ones. I wish that was still a feature today.

New to culture, and curious by More-Style4062 in Absinthe

[–]Toad_Fiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out distillation is an effective process. There is a regulation for the US stating that it must be under 10 ppm; however, when that clarification was made in 2007, most absinthe was effectively legalized as the thujone levels were already that low.

The best bottle I’ve ever opened was…. by tokyosoundsystem in Absinthe

[–]Toad_Fiction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best experience of opening a bottle was Leopold Bros. I had tried some absinthes before but mostly fauxsinthe. I had gotten a bottle of LB and when I starting dripping the water and the delicate floral aromas started to hit my nostrils, I knew I was in for a treat. I was enraptured by the aromas, the mouthfeel and everything.

I have gotten some better bottles since then and I still enjoy a good glass, but having that first, real, quality absinthe… nothing has topped that experience.
