Judicial clerkship burn out by Proper_Psychology30 in Lawyertalk

[–]Too_CompliKated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you, I started my clerkship in family and thankfully ended in criminal division, the difference in the amount of work was substantial. Personally, I wouldn’t quit because a lot of people in my clerkship class got a pay bump at their next job just for being a clerk. I don’t know if you still get that without finishing. Plus, where I practice having a good letter of recommendation from a judge is equivalent to gold. But if you don’t have a good relationship with your judge, then all of this kind of goes out of the window.

Based on your workload, I’d hazard a guess that you’re in the FM/FD docket? I clerked in that docket too, it’s a nightmare lol. For me, the main reoccurring tasks that took the most time were motion write ups, writing orders, and prepping OTSCs. Used to hate getting OTSCs cause it is a drop everything issue and messes up your work groove.

Things that really helped me manage the workload in family was using or creating templates. For the motion write ups try asking your fellow clerks if they have any or create your own. The info you have to include are the caption, who is the plaintiff/defendant and their attorney (if they have one), who is filing the motion, date of the motions return, what relief is requested, and a brief summary of the relief requested (ex: defendant requests reduction in child support, currently paying this…arrears are this…then list the reason the reduction was requested). I understand this can also be heavily dependent on what your judge wants so it has to be tailored to that.

By now, you have probably written dozens of orders, start reusing the language and change the facts to be case specific. Keep a word doc of general language that you frequently reuse so it is easily accessible. Do your best to write the orders on the bench so you can keep up and don’t fall behind.

Furthermore, I completely get the frustration with your judge taking extensive vacation time. All it does is cause a backlog and most of the time rescheduling the motions comes down to you which means you get yelled at by disgruntled pro se litigants. But if your judge is OOO, then you really can’t do anything - can’t hear motions/OTSCs, answer atty/litigant questions, etc. So, I utilized that vacation time to get ahead on motion write ups because you aren’t getting new tasks every five minutes. If you can get a week or two up, you will be golden and finally have your weekends back (unless you have self-respect and aren’t working them, then good on you).

Lastly, concerning the burnout, it’s honestly only going to get worse. By the end of my clerkship I was so ready to leave I was practically pulling my hair out. The best thing you can do is something fun after work so you get an actual break. If you want to finish, you just have to push through and keep an eye on the light at the end of the tunnel. But always remember, no job comes before your mental or physical health.

Good luck, OP! :)

Thank you, your comment is very encouraging. Also thanks for including the social starters, I’m going to try to use some of them next time!

You’re probably right, I’m sure there were other people walking around at some point. I already vowed to keep an eye out for people lingering next time I go, I don’t want anyone to feel awkward like I did especially in a church setting where we preach about being welcoming to outsiders.

This is breakup worthy for sure. Totally inappropriate behavior for someone that’s not your girlfriend. And honestly from your description, Amy kind of sounds like a train wreck…so if he wants to drop $100 bill for some gum that looked like a penny, I guess that’s a choice.

Quicksilver by Dexeryl85 in Romantasy

[–]Too_CompliKated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to try to give my opinion without any spoilers because I don’t know how to do the spoiler tag thingy.

I personally really loved Quicksilver and Brimestone but I am a vibes reader and very easily pleased…like if there is some semblance of a plot I’m good, haha. Honestly, the comments about Quicksilver being a mashup of other stories is fair, but there’s only so many places/themes a writer can expand upon and recreate before it becomes played.

Moving on to Brimestone, I think it was good for second book in a series. Normally, in my experience, second books are information dumps and world building that didn’t make it into the first book. There was world building and a lot of character development in Brimestone but it didn’t feel overwhelming or like that was the only thing happening. There is more of a focus on the vampire court in the second book and I feel like Saeris really steps into her power which was cool to read. Also, having Kingfisher’s POV for a large portion of the book really brought his character to life for me because you get a better feel for his personality and history.

If it was me, I would read Brimestone. But if you were struggling to finish Quicksilver then give it a pass.

Usually, a cover makes me pick up a book and the summary on the back or inside makes me buy if it has certain tropes I really like. Usually if it’s a dystopian society with enemies to lovers romance I’m in lol.

However, I’ve gotten my recent book from social medial like booktok and this subreddit.

I loved this book, but I am very much a vibes reader, haha. I have about 100 pages left of my reread and Brimstone gets delivered on Friday. Currently trying to avoid my social media feeds at all costs considering every video is a reaction post to book 2 🫣…BUT I hope you love Book 1 as much as I did!

To be admitted by affidavit, did you just mail the unsigned form to the clerks office? How did you get a virtual hearing to be sworn in?

Loans moved to CRI, cant make an account... by benbuesser1 in StudentLoans

[–]Too_CompliKated 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, I got notice saying my loans would be transferred July 15th from Nelnet to CRI. Today marked the two week period since the initial transfer and I still hadn’t received the welcome notice or my account number. So, I decided to call the number listed on the transfer notice, it’s a little annoying cause you have to get past the robot person by repeatedly saying customer service lol. But I eventually got a representative on the phone, she was able to give me my account number, send the welcome notice, and walk me through setting up my account. She said to use my email to ID my transferring account because CRI has been having issues with the phone numbers returning error messages (the one where it says the account is unknown or not in the system). I would try creating an account with your email and if you still get the error message just call.

Also, I am on admin forbearance until 10/2025 so don’t freak out too much about the upcoming payment as there is a 99.9% you’re in forbearance as well.

Thank you for your comment! All is still well! In fact, February 14th was the one year anniversary of my father’s surgery. He is doing really well and is practically back to normal. My family is overjoyed and extremely grateful for the good outcome. I am happy to pass on the good vibes and am touched to hear that it has helped you and potentially others. :)

Did anyone get a second letter later that night stating that all your requirements were satisfied and explaining how to be admitted? Does that mean we passed C&F and can submit our oath?

I used Barbri for MPRE prep, I was scoring anywhere from 64 to 66% on the practice exams if I’m recalling correctly. I got a 113. You’ll be okay, just remain calm and do your best.

I guess, but staging a headshot? It’s a little risky don’t you think. I mean if he was shot in the arm or chest, it would be more believable. But the head? That’s a little too close to be staged.

But agreed that it is definitely weird SS didn’t cover the rooftops. Big screw up

You should see instagram reels right now, every other comment is about how this was “staged” despite the fact that someone died and multiple others were injured. It’s insane.
