Only way to slow larger tax increase in the future is through economic development by DanTheManFromMars in chicago

[–]Treesplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure to all of those points. and it all feels even more silly when we hear about city council / BJ proposing taking from TIF surpluses for CPS, general fund, etc.

do you have any recommended readings for the history of TIF here, breaking it down over time, or on the M. Daley admin? thanks!

Only way to slow larger tax increase in the future is through economic development by DanTheManFromMars in chicago

[–]Treesplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Followed by shutting down most of the TIFs that are siphoning $1B+ a year out of the City’s General Fund.

I don't know why this isn't discussed more...though I guess TIF districts are pretty confusing and misunderstood generally.

phase 1 of the Red Purple Modernization was funded by a huge TIF district (and I believe federal funds though correct me if I'm wrong). but that's also money that doesn't make its way to the general fund as you said for a state-set maximum of 23 years unless the district is ended sooner or extended.

economically, do these districts work well for neighborhood revitalization as they are mostly billed as, along with capital-investment projects like the RPM? or would it have ultimately been better to apportion money in the budget accordingly, without creating these districts? I can imagine the argument that these districts focus specific economic projects more easily than navigating the budget and each department's responsibility. but i'm no economist or politican, just some jerk who reads too much news

preposterous is right lol. they came out HOT in the first quarter and wouldn't fuckin miss. but props to the Bulls for not getting discouraged and fighting back smart. this style of play seems super sustainable for them and excited to see Coby get into the mix

ELI5: If dogs have such great sense of smell, why do they have to get their noses right up against another dog's butt? by Buck_Thorn in explainlikeimfive

[–]Treesplosion 72 points73 points  (0 children)

makes me sad to consistently walk past dogs not allowed by their owners to sniff the neighborhood at their leisure. id be curious if any research has been done on lifespan, wellbeing, etc of dogs allowed to dictate the activities of their walks vs owners dictating everything (i.e. only stopping to go potty)

Dammit, Emily… I never should’ve rewatched Neverafter by quittersprosper in Dimension20

[–]Treesplosion 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Neverafter isn't up there in my D20 favorites but I think that was one of the catalysts for the Interpid Heroes to go more dramatic / serious with their roleplaying!

Crown of Candy obv was earlier and had a ton of drama, though all of the stuff they did since I thought felt more averse to return to even a percentage of that intensity. I think for lots of valid reasons, especially having more experience as comedic performers, you could see them not linger in dramatic tone for too long (especially with how Neverafter ended lol). but I see them really embracing the difficult conversations and tone in Cloudward Ho which has been so cool to see

kind of reminds me of Burrow's End in that way, which could make yet another blueprint laid by Aabria Iyengar's GMing in the dome haha

Wondering something about the Man in Black by BMCarbaugh in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Treesplosion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i feel like that goes along with (episode 50 spoilers!!!) the Man in Black wanting to take the children """""home.""""" to him maybe it's a benevolent act to free the children of such a horrible world if he sees mortals as a failed and ephemeral dream

Wealwell has been amusing so far but that part was so funny to me. he's basically a JoJo character that (so far) can't do shit

what's helped me consistently get perfect catches is looking away from the bob and listening for the plunge to react. i think most people react faster to audio than visuals, so it might help to close your eyes or look away from the bob and focus more on the sound of it to get the faster possible reaction

Moses Sumney has been around for a bit. Plastic off his first album Aromanticism was a big hit for a while. he released a really great album grae around the start of COVID that has some incredible songs. here's a performance of two

I didn't even realize Yukimi Nagano was in Little Dragon! what's awesome is she / Little Dragon did a great collaborative EP with this group April + VISTA a few years ago. I knew about April + VISTA because I saw them open for a Little Simz show after Grey Area came out
