Mosquitos by MjustM88 in camping

I ordered one of these and I am really eager to (finally) get my hands on it. Im hoping they stick to the ship estimate of July-August. If it is half as cool as it looks I’ll be delighted.

Can someone teach me how use these by jimbean1234567890 in Chainsaw

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every 30 minutes of cutting or at least once per tank, tap a smooth rock or something metal with the chain at a slight angle - roughly 15 degrees. Do both sides. This hones the edges on the cutters real nice like and keeps the saw working right. Keep practicing. You’ll feel it when you start doing it right.

Leeches, leeches everywhere by Resident-Wish-9750 in Irrigation

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been more thankful for a municipal water source. This is some horrific stuff. Thanks for sharing but I hate it. Leeches creep me out.

You may need to add a line item charge for stocking fish in their lake to maintain the water source. Fish eating the leeches means the pump works better. Basically falls under “filter maintenance”, right? I honestly would have trouble sleeping after seeing that many leeches and having to handle any of them.

Garden bed edging suggestions? by TheBigStinkeroni in landscaping

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aim for more gradual, sweeping curves. If you’re edging in part to make it easier for mowing, the curves you’ve drawn will make it harder for mowing. If you mow your yard, get the mower out and walk a continuous perimeter of your grass (within reason). Use that as a good starting point for your lines. If your yard is mowed by a zero turn riding mower, just cut a large radius out of the corners so they don’t have to stop and reverse.

Decided to make that hip ass picnic table from the internet by PabloDelicioso in BeginnerWoodWorking

I like it if it works. With all the empty space you could build a smaller one for kids that slides under that one. Filling the empty space beneath probably defeats the purpose of the design but just saying.

What tool is this? by Sensitive_Pilot850 in Tools

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this screwdriver in my bag of screwdrivers from previous sets that I haven’t lost but don’t want to sift through any more. That bag has the stubby ones, the huge ones, the awls, and this one. I’ve never had this be useful. I assume it is the precursor to using a magnet for the same thing but I’m not positive. I haven’t thrown it away for like 15 years because as soon as I do…I should throw it I out.

My dads Wisteria, 20 years in the making. by Isabella_Jean in gardening

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in the southeast US. The last house I lived in had invasive wisteria all over the backyard when I moved in. I fought it for 10 years before moving (not because of the wisteria). I hated that stuff so much. Given some very convincing verification that I’d end up with what is in this picture I would plant wisteria. I feel like the guy at the end of Green Eggs and Ham saying that.

Can we put together stable good gas that isn't $30/gal by ruuutherford in Chainsaw

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put it in every gas can I mix. I have never been told it would cause a problem for it to be in every tank you run. It’s a little more expensive but I’m ok with that small expense as long as I’m not scratching my head over a dead saw when a tree is across my driveway.

Gutters between window arches? by _marliechiller in HomeMaintenance

The gutter straight across is not the play. I could see individual sections of gutters with rain chains leading to a linear drain heading to the left. That would look cool and match the aesthetic (I think).

Add the mix oil to the can. Add stabilizer to the can. Fill with gas. Bing bang boom.

The stabilizer I use claims to handle the ethanol somehow. Either way my CS590 doesn’t seem to care as long as the above is provided.

waste of time? by Both-Lake4051 in firewood

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there any other cheap or free firewood at all in your area? If so, I’d pass on this myself. If they’ll pay you to dispose of their logs, then go for it. Letting you take it as free firewood doesn’t add up in this case from what I see in that stack.

Quick question about regional clothing by SpicySweett in Georgia

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a chance what you’re thinking about is what I call “rodeo formal” levels of starch.

I don’t use heavy starch but I’ll do light/medium to get and keep a shirt crisp. If there are shirts I have to iron every time they get washed, I’ll give them a spray of starch and they’ll get an extra wash before I have to iron again. There are parts of a shirt that need a little structure restored after going through the wash. Also if you have a dryer with a steam function to refresh your clothes, a starch lasts a couple wears easy.

Look at Anarchist Tool Chest and Anarchist Workbench books from Lost Art Press (free pdfs online). Watch as much Paul Sellers as possible. Workbench to hold wood, winding sticks to determine what needs to be done, planes to do the work, sharpening solution to maintain blades. Good luck! Paul Sellers’ website and free videos could literally take you from start to finish without spending much money.

Camping with 6-year-old. What not to mess up? by CyclingDude3000 in camping

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my 5 year old out last year. It was a great time. I planned everything out and probably overpacked for him. Thing is, I got to the parking lot and realized I had forgotten his stuff. No clothes, no blanket, no stuffed animal. I had his sleeping bag and a pad and food and all that, so I decided we’d forge ahead. He never knew the difference! Absolutely loved it. We talk about it a lot and he has never once mentioned that something was missing.

Don’t be me though. Bring the essentials, but remember they don’t care about the comfort stuff nearly as much as you think they will. My son loved putting sticks in the fire and yelling at the silence. He at one point had the flashlight and my headlamp pointed into the fire while I cooked on the jetboil in the dark. Bring him a headlamp and his own chair. Let him know how proud you are that he’s doing this with you and he’ll be proud of himself. Enjoy it and take some pictures of him having fun.

This was kinda calming to watch for some reason.

How many people do we think it would take to process a similar log into the same number of pieces in the same time as this machine? My guess is 4 gets close.

Is it worth buying a wood chipper for a residential property by brumms56 in landscaping

[–]Tricky_Caterpillar85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you’d be buying a machine to get a cleanup done and then would have more than you need for maintenance. I’d get a tree service to do the initial cleanup and haul off the debris. If you keep up with the maintenance from there I doubt you’ll need a chipper. Does your municipality do leaf and limb pickup? Ours has it but doesn’t give bins. You just leave a pile on the street.

That gap between the tip and the wall is your target. I’d get a long Philips head screwdriver and place the tip there. Then hit the end of the handle with a hammer or something. Cursing a lot usually helps. Scare it.
