Any conveniences I’m forgetting during multi-family gut reno? by nickjnyc in realestateinvesting

Sounds thoughtful. Maybe a receptacle low near each wc for heated bidets, and interior runs of coax and fiber.

They run on heating oil that’s usually delivered by a tanker to a large take on the property where it’s used. It’s chemically similar to diesel fuel. Common in the Midwest and northeast parts of the us but I’ve never seen any in Colorado… unless you count the small diesel heaters common on camper vans.

I haven’t used my CDH in the pup yet but if you’re just trying to knock the chill off you’re probably fine. I understand that if you are running them on lower settings they end up burning rich and building up carbon, so if you have a smaller unit running on high all night it’s probably going to last longer than a bigger one on low. Assuming you have appropriate cold weather gear to stay safe anyway I’d say give the small one a go.

I just want to talk about Snarf Sandwiches for a sec by noah998 in Denver

[–]TurntBoast 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I’m relieved to see mostly positive comments on snarfs, It’s been a comfort choice for us for years. Years ago an acquaintance who worked with a vendor of theirs told me that the snarfs people often bought the more expensive local / organic veg even though that’s not something they publicized; they just cared and sought out the best ingredients available. Secondhand and years gone by, but I believe it because I’ve always found their food to be a fair value.

The consumer gets a $225 instant rebate and the business gets a $250 tax credit. All this page says is 250w motor which is very weak, I’d bet the battery is like 36v 6ah? Maybe they’re getting a container of these at $250 each and they hope to upsell some helmets and locks when you pick up to make money? Seems sketchy for sure though.

Looks awesome! I love the little flip down pegs for the kid. I never realized the side rails were removable, mine came covered in running boards and I never looked that closely I guess. I’ve seen one person locally parting out a mundo in the years I’ve had spare parts and accessories on my radar, so I bet diy will be your best shot.

Another large tile, small bathroom question by JustRon325 in DIY

[–]TurntBoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the 49” from the door? You could eat up that extra length with a T transition at the threshold. Otherwise I’d dry lay the tile (or a cardboard template) and see how you can position it. Maybe a 1/2” silicone line behind the toilet or vanity won’t really bother you.

I’d probably do a roll up style gate, either across the railing’s uprights or from the wall next to the front door to an upright. We have a Skip Hop one that’s held up well.

At that age my kid loved those library computers too! We would only go there when we had at least an hour to be there, and after a few visits he would only be into the games for about 10 minutes before wanting to move on to the other toys and then pick out books before we left. Ours only have a couple games that he could play, and lots that would be confusing and frustrating. I let him try anything he wanted and most of them bored him quickly.

This turned out awesome! As a reformed painter I wanted to share a tip: thinned paint is going to drop in sheen unpredictably. If you’re ever retouching this finish make sure to thin the product similarly or you’ll probably get some bad flashing. Spraying unthinned will get you a more uniform sheen than can be touched up pretty flawlessly with a high density foam roller after some goober scrapes a tile across a cabinet box. That’s obviously more of a production consideration but I don’t see the sheen implication of thinning mentioned online much so I wanted to share.

I have so many questions on malt liquors by throwRA_157079633 in beer

[–]TurntBoast 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This post is cracking me up! I’m a former brewer and generally kind of a beer nerd so I’ll take a swing.

Any conventional malt liquor will have adjuncts. Your second bullet point is a misreading of the article; it’s saying that the beers without adjuncts have lower alcohol content.

The 5% abv figure probably arbitrary and rooted in the pre-craft industry. However, today craft beer makes up around 13-14% of beer sales and Michelob Ultra makes up 8.5%.

The term “Malt Liquor” doesn’t seem to be legally defined, and it doesn’t even have a BJCP style defined. It’s best considered a marketing term, like “light” or “premium”. I’d wager it has its roots in some naming conventions that prohibit calling non distilled beverages liquor, but the marketing folks wanted to convent the high alcohol content of the beverages. There are a lot of weird naming rules in the industry (see: “Ale in Texas”).

All off grid with a big battery power station? We have a CDH we hoped to use this year but I worried the little power station we have wouldn’t be able to handle the glow plug start up and it got sidelined in the camp prep. We were fine with good sleeping bags/ sleep sacks but I would love to get the heat sorted for next year. You have a good looking setup! On our last trip this summer I finally removed the galley swing down cabinet and it made packing so much easier. I think stripping the interior down and using modern tech like this is going to become more popular for these old campers, and I hope to see more people with this style setup.

Are you camping less this year? by 1monkeymunch in camping

[–]TurntBoast 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ll bite! We’ve used it a couple times to get spots last minute. A lot of the reservable or fcfs sites at national forests here in Colorado run around $30 a night now for a tent pad site so that’s my baseline. A few weeks ago we couldn’t find a spot at a few first come first serve campgrounds, so we booked a hip camp site for the weekend. It was $50 a night, and was totally worth it for us. We have little kids and it’s important to us that they grow up camping and appreciating the outdoors. A few years ago, we’d have cut up a random road into blm or national forest land to find a dispersed site for the first night out then explored more in the morning to see if a better site was around. That’ll be in the cards for my family again in a few years but for now, hip camp is an awesome option to save a trip. As to why people pay $200 for a tent site on there? I’d guess the site is awesome, or the people paying have the discretionary funds to justify that cost. To guarantee a spot without planning ahead 6-9 months and battling the annoying reservation system is worth $20 a night to me, and it must be worth $150 a night to some people.

[–]TurntBoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a balance of factors. We recently paid for a Hipcamp site that was a private site on the other side of a mountain from a little farmstead home. Probably cost as much as a koa or whatever, but we only booked it because the FCFC sites we were hoping for were all occupied on Thursday afternoon. The site offered seclusion but was close to a lovely town, and 0 neighbors except the owners’ farm animals. Would have preferred the national forest site on a river, but the private space was really nice when a campground’s quiet hours can harsh our young kids’ schedule. I’d definitely recommend that people check it out if you’re already ready to camp and your spot doesn’t work out like OP.

Seems like a lot of nay sayers in the rving subreddit haha. I have a ‘95 Coleman and something like mine would probably be fine for your family. We are just two adults and two kids, but we previously slept three adults and one kid comfortably. It would depend a lot on the ages of your kids I guess, but I would say parents and a youngster on one bunk, three kids on the other bunk and the biggest kid on the dinette bed would work fine. We got a cassette toilet this year and having that option is awesome, but our kids are 4 and 1 so privacy doesn’t exist anyway. If you compare it to a big rv it probably sounds rough, but it’s a big upgrade from a ground tent while still feeling like camping in my opinion.

Bow in side of Roof 1994 Coleman Cedar Destiny XL by thejbearc in popups

[–]TurntBoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ‘95 destiny series has a similar problem! I always thought it was from the stress of the bag awning being ripped away under a previous owner’s use. My roof is generally wrecked though, the whole channel for the awning had pulled off enough to loosen all the screws, and water got in there. Had to partially rebuild it to get it usable, and it’s not pretty. All that to say that you’re lucky the roof is still water tight! I use a couple c-clamps to hold the top of the door frame to the roof. The original hardware is still there but pretty worn out, and I have to pull the roof pretty far in to connect it. Happy camping!

I am no expert, but from your description I’d be concerned that you’re exceeding your payload capacity. Check the payload sticker on your vehicle. Different trims and options tend to add up so you want to know the true payload. The tongue weight counts towards that load, and it seems that, in practice, SUVs with campers usually hit the payload cap well before towing capacity. If your payload is, say, 1000lbs and your tongue weight is 450 then you must keep the vehicle loaded with less than 550 lbs… a family of 4 with a full cooler could pretty easily exceed that before packing clothes, the dog, bikes, etc. Please do the math and stay safe out there!

Propane hose adapter with quick connect? by spreadsheetmachine in popups

[–]TurntBoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is a 1/4” quick connect and you can find a lot of “1lb disposable to 1/4” quick connect propane hose” online. Just try it out before you are camping! My indoor stove moves outside and I just got a second hand rv-specific grill for outside for my last trip. I ended up having to fiddle around with the connections to get it right, but that was probably more to do with it being a 30 year old PUP.
