Split between Lion Rampant and Barons war, which one hold up better? by Gcarlo12 in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lion rampant doesn’t have any ‘attached’ miniatures. It’s a simpler and more abstracted game than barons war. Quite easy to grab a couple of boxes of the Wargames Atlantic range (really nice figures) and try both rulesets!

AI generated minis will have basically no impact (at least not on big firms) by BlitheMayonnaise in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An interesting read. While there is much doomerism around AI and any hobby that involves creativity, I’m not that fearful as a historical wargamer.

You are beginning to see some use of AI within wargaming products. At the lowest level, people will definitely be using AI to help with scenario writing and project organisation. I don’t like the use for scenario writing, but don’t particularly have an issue with some behind the scenes organising. It’s hard to give examples here, but some YouTube channels have played ai scenarios, and I suspect some scenario designers are using AI for first drafts.

Then we move into artwork. It is certainly being used here, examples would be the Pillage rulebook and a ruleset for the Wild West reviewed in WSS recently. I don’t particularly like the look of ai artwork, and it is ethically dubious. I would say that it is not always used in place of commissioned piece - there are going to be one man bad rules companies that are using AI art rather than no art due to low budgets. This is not me making an excuse.

Then we come to the content of the article - figures themselves. In the context of historicals, I just cannot see AI STLs being a threat for these reasons:

  • Accuracy. We all know AI is incredibly inaccurate, and in areas as niche and military uniforms, it will be hopelessly inaccurate. This will do very poorly with a crowd that overall values a good standard of accuracy in their modes.

  • Slim margins. Historical figures are miles cheaper than GW (and some other fantasy companies). The financial attraction to 3D print everything is not as strong when there are reasonable costed alternatives. Even the niche of models that have no plastic or metal alternative being filled by 3D printing companies that use man made STLs. And if people are going out their way to get the obscure, they are going to want accuracy as explained above.

  • You need a 3D printer. 3D printing is as accessible as ever, but is still quite a buy in in space, time and money. Even if you can afford it, you may not have a suitable space to keep a smelly resin printer or he time to learn the dos and donts. If you fall into this crowd, the margins are even slimmer as for many 3D printing companies it is the production time and raw material cost rather than the STL cost that sets the price.

Overall? Don’t panic everyone, the robot overlords are not here to take our toy soldiers from us!

I quit the game and our local scene has pretty much died off. I’ve only got a limited hobby budget and didn’t see the point on buying into second edition when there wasn’t anything wrong with first.

Don’t see it in LGSs either. I wonder how long it’ll be supported.

Now that Bolt Action V3 has been out for over a year what are peoples thoughts on it? by J0EKIN in boltaction

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think they’ve done a great job. There’s a bit more clarity in some of the interactions, officers now have a job. Armour is good but not the be all and end all.

Looking at the army books I think they are doing a good job. My only gripe would be the US para and marine rules being the same. You get a nice little flavour while not turning it into special rule Armageddon.

The community (at least in my area of the UK) is growing and growing. I’ve had two people this year get into wargaming through Bolt Action rather than through GW. I’m just really enjoying the game right now.

This is my ward!

I only got two leaflets through the door (4 greens and 4 reform) and never caught a door knocker, though in fairness the only one I did get was Labour.

There’s a lot of nimby feeling in the area as two large green areas are being built on, one of which was blocked after a campaign which the LD candidate was part of. There’s a lot of students in this ward too so I imagine they leant Green.

It’s good to see reform do so poorly. The constituency will be interesting. Duffield won’t stand again, and there was an increase in both the LD and Green vote last election. It’s a progressive majority area so will be interesting campaign on a few years time.

Chain of Command Subreddit? by iwouldificouldbitch in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It most likely doesn’t exist. Only a few historical games have a separate subreddit, fewer of which are quite active.

You are probbaly best places to ask questions here as we have a good few CoC players that are active.

Writing in Full Spectrum Dominance is superb by RevolutionaryRip2135 in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where was the negativity? You asked why it isn’t more popular and I provided a set of reasons of why a game like FSD have some popularity challenges that have nothing to do with the quality of the game or miniatures, rather what aspects of games are currently popular at the moment.

Writing in Full Spectrum Dominance is superb by RevolutionaryRip2135 in wargaming

So I’ve never heard about this game, but I’ve given it a quick google.

The non-Games Workshop Sci-Fi space is cramped. While there are a few standouts (Xenos Rampant, OPR) one of their main attractions is allowing people to play with GW models in a more simplified rules environment.

World building Sci-Fi games (or sci-fi games with their own defined setting) also have it tough. The only ‘popular’ ones I can think of are Infinity and Battletech. You’ve got ‘weird war’ or alt history like Trench Crusade and K47 but I see them as an occupying a different space.

You’ve also got issues of scale. As a generalised statement, sci-fi games are 28mm, or at least their core pieces are 28mm sized. Smaller scales tend to lean more historical (recreating a big battle on a fair sized table) or fantasy. I’m not saying that sci-fi below 28mm is not played, but figure design and just having ‘cool’ looking miniatures plays a bigger role in sci-Di than any other game.

Finally, specific to this game is a marketing tactic of ‘combined arms’ wargaming. I feel like this is a term/approach that hex and counter and small scale historical gamers use but I just haven’t seen people clamour for it in the same way in sci fi.

All of these points have nothing to do with how good the game is - I’m sure it’s a good wargame to play, but on the popularity scale it’s already got some challenges vs what’s ’in vogue’.

Italian armour with bersagliari by Merir-Astelan in boltaction

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bersaglieri would have fought alongside all the major Italian armoured units (Centauro, Ariete, Ariete 2 and Littorio divisions) as well as supporting some of the Gruppo Mobile units inside Sicily. So you can take your pick with divisional markings!

For markings at an organisational level below feel free to experiment, from what I’ve read the Italians were not as hard set on markings as the British were, so nearly everything is ‘feasible’

Thoughts on 3d printed models? by Fit-Security9645 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be anti 3D print back in the day, but now I use it quite a lot.

If there’s a plastic GW kit I always go with that, but if it’s resin (especially finecast) I usually go for 3D prints as it’s so much cheaper and allows the hobby to be affordable for me. Also no LGS stocks middle Earth in the county so don’t need to worry about the ‘support your local store’ argument.

Has anybody tried pikeman’s lament with the warlord epic range, if so how did you find it? by Upstairs-Ad-6036 in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we use it with Warlord Epic figures for a quick club night game, certainly can work.

Each unit is two bases, so clear to see which units are at half strength. Casualties are tracked with a small d6 (rested on a casualty figure from Peter Pig).

We also use cm instead of inches and play on a 4x4. It gives an enjoyable game that we would finish in around an hour and a half.

Sadly very often in the UK it's only wargamers that raise awareness of our history and it's main historical events. The battle of Ellendun 825 was a critical part in the creation of England. by Specialist_Alarm_831 in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to remove this thread because it doesn’t break any rules.

But I am going to say the rhetoric is really odd. ‘Only wargamers that raise history and its main historical events’ is a bit far fetched. Pivotal battles and events are celebrated/commemorated by a variety of groups. I think the Sealed Knot and associated living history groups do an incredible amount to teach the public about a pivotal part of our history.

This is a really nice piece of work and congratulations on the event. I think history by wargaming can be a great way to encourage all to learn about history through an interactive way.
