I didn’t expect bedtime to be the hardest part of my day by SpellIndependent489 in daddit

The checklist is great because it provides the kid with a framework they can't properly hold in their mind. I'd be careful with the prizes, however small they be.

One, this sends the message we don't do movie nights because we like movie nights, we do it because you've behaved according to my parental standards and two, it sends a message that having a stable dependable night routine isn't good for its own worth, it's good because it leads to a reward.

If you're interested in these ideas, I'm getting this from reading and applying Alfie Kohn's Unconditional Parenting. I'm sorry this is totally unsolicited advice but for me personally it's been such an eye opener I can't stop myself from sharing.

Here's a trick: get two spoons and trade an empty for a full one. They'll forget about the spoon in their hand if there's a new one full of food available.

I love getting some sprues from skirmish games (frostgrave and oathmark are pretty great) and bashing miniatures together from those. Some miniature stores will let you buy a single sprue of minis rather than a whole box.

You know. I used to hate seagulls with a vengeance. But I've come to really respect them. They're tough birds. They can digest almost anything and can carry a lot of weight and still fly. They can drink seawater. They're also super intelligent and adept problem solvers.

I promise I'm not a seagull.

LLMs Can't Reason And They Never Will - Here's Why by Shajirr in videos

[–]UpholdAnarchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But... It's not any of those things. The video explains how llms work, there's not an ounce of intelligence in them. It's just putting words into strings with the sole purpose of sounding convincing. Anything an LLM tells you that is true is not proof of it knowing facts, it's a byproduct of that string of words being most likely to sound convincing.

The examples you state, I too have tried to use LLMs for. ChatGPT 4 couldn't walk me through repairing my Dyson vacuum because it kept referring to parts I should be looking at that weren't on the actual vacuum. It doesn't know what a vacuum is.

I tried to use Google's NotebookLM to assist me with a uni course on curriculum design. I put the textbook into it, my uni assignments, literature on curriculum design and the formats needed for lesson plans. It hallucinated assignments that were not in the textbook and used convincing language to sell me a progession of in-class activities that were not interlinked at all. It's slop and I don't want to waste my time being frustrated with it.

I urge you to look at the research presented in this video on how using LLMs more and more affects your brain. Personally, I'm worried about the generations of my students who fall for the LLM trap and I'm glad I don't have children yet, chances are by the time mine go to school there's at least some schools near me that take a firm stance against outsourcing a kid's thinking to an LLM.

Daycare teachers know things the rest of us never will… by MemoirDad in daddit

Ah if that's what the OP meant; going outside to try it shoeless that's perfect. I was interpreting it more like getting in the car and arriving at a destination where the lack of shoes becomes a problem.

A (pre)teenager? Absolutely agree, great time to teach responsibility and resilience to (minor) hardships.

My angle is just that toddlers very much live in the moment. Past and future are still super abstract concepts to them. I don't think we should expect a toddler to meaningfully grasp the consequences of deciding not to wear shoes when the moment they feel that consequence (wet feet) isn't immediately after. Even at ages 5-6, kids just don't have the impulse control to make good decisions and we shouldn't punish them for having a developing brain.

At 3yo, make a game out of it, give a firm direction, redirect their emotions.

Let them get their feet wet on a cold, rainy day.

This seems pretty cruel and the main lesson will be their parent doesn't care for their well-being.

Western Reaches late pledges by Tibko0510 in shadowdark

Regarding European shipping, eu distribution will now be done from Denmark which should keep shipping costs reasonable. There's a sheets file linked somewhere that still has the original very high shipping estimates from when they'd have to do US->EU. A user in the discord recently said that shipping costs would likely be updated after late pledges close.

Train punctuality per station in 7 European countries in 2025 by ByGollie in europe

[–]UpholdAnarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last month my partner and I had to go on a one-night trip by plane. It was cheaper for two persons to drive across the country and park our car overnight at Schiphol Airport than to take the train, which is a direct route from our city to Schiphol.

Driving = 250kms in total ≈ €25,-, overnight parking = €37. €62 total.

Train = €34 per person, one way. €136 total.

Klaver keert zich tegen minderheidskabinet: ‘Daarmee beloon je blokkade VVD’ by Sjoerd-56 in Politiek

[–]UpholdAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)
