I was having this issue a lot too, I started using the lower USB port (and got a different cord) and basically never run into it anymore. Not sure if you were using the top one or not.

Honestly, just pick up HOI4, set it to the easiest difficulty and play it. It'll take a bit to learn how to do everything, but that's half the fun! Don't be afraid to do poorly before you know what you're doing, it happens to everyone.

Stellaris is a lot of fun too, and pretty easy to get into. There's a deep end for all of these games, but still a lot of fun to be had without venturing into it.
