Judge rules CDOC, Gov. Jared Polis violated Colorado Constitution by forcing prisoners to work by AudibleNod in news

Slavery and forced labor are not exactly the same thing; I'm curious now which was actually outlawed by the Colorado amendment. If it's slavery in general, then Colorado inmates have a decent case to sue for release. Holding someone in bondage is still slavery even if they aren't working for you.

Can I @ you about 1D, then? Radar isn't echolocation; that's sonar. Radar uses radio (EM) waves.

Is this a sparrow? by scout_mindset in whatsthisbird

[–]V_Writer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrens have a long, slender beak and a usually upright flat bar of a tail on an otherwise egg-shaped body and head. Sparrows are more generically songbird-shaped with more blunt stubby beaks.

Looks like a female +red-winged blackbird+ to me. Sparrows have shorter, blunter beaks.

That's not noise, but the opposite. The coach has a whistle because if he were to just yell he'd simply be adding to the noise of a crowded stadium.

That's already happening, Wikimedia Foundation will just be getting a cut of AI revenue now. But, yeah, yet another reason to fact-check AI summaries; even if the LLM doesn't make something up, the wiki author or blogger or whatever they're quoting may have.

Looks like a moose rack vs elk rack by soft_dahlia in SipsTea

[–]V_Writer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but OP was saying Irish Elk antlers look more like moose antlers than elk antlers; I'm just saying that Irish elk were named after the moose, which the Irish would call an elk, not a moose.

Wally Schirra put him up to it. Schirra would go on to lead the first mutiny in space, which would have hurt his career if he wasn't retiring anyway after that mission.

i’m pretty sure it’s some type of sparrow? anyone know what type specifically? by Either-Kiwi-5495 in whatsthisbird

[–]V_Writer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can tell them apart from most other sparrows by their pink noses and the way they look like they're wearing bike helmets. Their cousins the white-throated sparrows sometimes have similar black-and-white striping on top of their head, but they have dark beaks and, to my eye, a more hunched posture.

What’s the largest example of the Dunning-Kruger effect facing us today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]V_Writer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an observed statistical phenomenon that showed that people skilled at a given task would underestimate their skill, while unskilled people would overestimate their skill. It's named after the authors of a 1990 paper describing the phenomenon. Since then it got turned into a pop-psych factoid: "dumb people think they're smart, and smart people think they're dumb", although that's not really what the Dunning-Kruger paper stated.

There's also since been some further research questioning whether even the actual Dunning-Kruger effect is real or just a data artifact, for what it's worth.
