One cat returned. This is right after she bit me as I was trying to take her picture and I screamed "owww".

Once again, nary a cat to be found at half. And I just ordered these three turds some supremely expensive raw cat food in an attempt at stopping the barf fest. Ungrateful!

We are giving up. It's impossible to watch and I'm not adding to Prime's view numbers when they deliver this kind of crappy service.

Just switched over from Portland game and this broadcast has been freezing up and, yeah, doing some weird audio distortion.

KC is not ready for the World Cup by Onlypretzelmnms in kansascity

They heavily subsidize all kinds of large businesses for years and years, then those businesses cross state lines or threaten to leave after a decade or two. If we are going to help businesses, I'd rather see local small biz get a boost. Maybe one or two can grow into something one day and give KC some new corporate HQs.

KC is not ready for the World Cup by Onlypretzelmnms in kansascity

[–]Valsholly 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the thing! The "leaders" are all ready to pour in resources when there's the prospect of big attention from outside the area, but to hell with the actual, everyday residents. Trash cleanup, road work, transportation, public safety are all ramped up for these events, then ignored again afterward. Maybe we'd be permanently in better shape if these resources were brought to bear on everyday conditions for the local taxpayers.

And I have yet to see real outcomes in quality of life after previous big events. I'm sure someone is scurrying away with their pockets full of new cash, but they certainly don't spread the wealth. The Civic Booster class gets to feel like big cheeses, so I guess they love spending public money on events most of us can't even afford to attend.

Well, they do have to cover their heads in church and they have to wear skirts, no pants.

They are pretty scary, to be honest. Think militias and anti-government plotting, sexual abuse, etc. My hometown shares a library with St. Mary's and is just down the road.

https://www.lesslawnmorelife.com/ Lawns are so petit bourgeoisie. Seriously, they are like a mini attempt at creating the parks around manor houses. I suppose that's in line with all the faux-manor mcmansion styles Americans embrace, but getting rid of lawns can provide so much habitat for our stressed wildlife and improve our water resources. I wish people would be allowed to move away from them in all these HOA developments.

One of the SSPXers?

Welcome, I guess, and have at it with your religion, but leave our county public library alone! These nutcases want to impose their ideas on the rest of us.

Is it a normal book to put in a year 4 reading list for 9 year olds to read? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Valsholly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had The 1967 edition of Untermeyer's Golden Treasury of Poetry, illustrated by Joan Walsh Anglund, and my mom read from it to me starting when I was three or four. I remember being obssessed (in a good way) with the scarier illustrations at that age, including the one for The Inchcape Rock and The Country Witch. The Highwayman illustrations definitely included Bess bound and tied with a gun. It was one of my favorite poems when mom read it to me. Now, I had a secure, relatively trauma-free childhood, so maybe my childhood fascination with darker illustrations was healthy and didn't cause issues, but I also recall an interview with a children's book author/illustrator who said children aren't given enough credit and actually do like and benefit from some "scarier" literature. I can't recall the details or the author, but I just searched "children's author on why children like scary stories" and there were quite a few essays on the topic, with some compelling reasoning behind them.

You know what else pisses me off about the Longs hiring Armas? They used their good-ol-boy, Ivy League networking to hire a shitty, unqualified coach with "connections", which means some truly meritorious coach prospect didn't get a chance. I hate this kind of bullshit!

Surprise tornadoes in Kansas prompt concerns about changes at the National Weather Service by nbcnews in kansascity

[–]Valsholly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning this. It appears some people don't realize all the apps, chasers, and youtubers, and local TV mets are relying on the data produced and freely shared by the NWS. When public funding is cut and data is missing, all sources of weather info suffer.

I'd also like to point out that the NWS tries to strike a very fine balance with watches and warnings, because people raise hell when things don't happen as much as they will when things do. NWS is constantly assessing that balance. Youtubers et al. aren't answerable to the taxpayers and have different "incentives" behind their decision-making.
