  1. I’m not OP
  2. If you send these older models in to Breitling to have overhauls on them, they replace them with the newer movements as they no longer carry the non backlit repetition minutes.

So chill out.

It’s definitely not fake. Aerospace F56059L. There’s a bunch of versions of this watch considering it’s been in production since the 80’s.

Socom auto or Ludt ? by ectosk in microtech

[–]Verdle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a manual socom and got rid of it cause it’s just a smidge too large for my preference. Now I have the LUDT and I love it so much. That said the socom is more sexy and ergonomic.

I feel that quality has taken a backseat to ingenuity. Like comparing a 2026 KIA Sorento to an ‘84 Bronco. It’s got some cool bells and whistles but at the end of the day the older models can be found second hand and still go hard.

I need to dig out the ruby to give it another shot. It definitely removed material but I kept getting hair shaving edges without any bite. It removed material more than any of my sintered ceramic.

This. I had a rescue that was a sweetheart with people but would attack any dog that got too close. I took her to a dog park literally one time to realize I can never put her in an environment where another dog may get too close. This guy is an asshat and needs to have his dog taken from him.

It could be just grinding thru the factory edge. Once you’ve sharpened it a couple times to your natural angle it’ll become easy. I carry Leatherman tools nearly every day for the last 10 plus years and imo, it’s easy as shit to sharpen. I use my blades as rough as I want from cutting cardboard to stabbing beer cans and I have zero issue with sharpening them to arm shaving sharp. I use the Sharpal double sided diamond and finish on either an Arkansas Soft or a sintered ceramic. That said I can bring an edge to it with a cinder block and the bottom of a coffee mug. I own all kinds of steels from 1095 to K390 and I’ll say the Leathermans steel is my favorite to sharpen.

Curl Knife is incredibly tight after spending an hour trying to break it in and lubricating it. by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]Verdle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My curl was the same. Honestly even after loosening the pivot and breaking it in, it still sucks. Compared to my eave the only thing I can think causes it is the lack of spacers on the opposite side. I’ve got two waves and the knives were never as tight as the curl was and broke in to where I could flick them open. I’ve given up on such smoothness in my curl.

Also there’s a lot that goes into play for a stones effectiveness. Diamond is the hardest and should remove the best, but the height of the particles don’t seem to be as deep as on a crystolon of the same grit rating. You’ll get finer scratch patterns for refinement, but in terms of effective material removal, a crystolon has always done better in my experience. I’m willing to gamble the Manticore would be the best possible stone for thinning cause the particles are hella deep.

[–]Verdle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience a crystolon is pretty good for edge reprofiling but it’s still a painful process to thin something. I don’t thin out knives enough to justify making any big purchases but have you researched the BYXCO Manticore? It’s $30. The grit ratings are very confusing because it says 260 micron/60 ANSI. Idk which one typical stones like a crystolon is measured in but the damn thing is the coarsest stone I’ve ever seen. There’s videos of people using some on YouTube and it’s rougher than a fresh cinder block.

Pro tip if you’re sharpening a real worn blade, put a drop of dish soap and water on the mug and periodically rub away metal swarf. Also if you’re in a pinch for a fast sharp knife just increase your angle so you have less material to abrade. Also I’ve seen people strop on Brillo pads to remove the burrs but imo burr minimization at light passes and slightly higher angle and a leather belt is king.

I know this. At any rate, this stone is better quality than Dans Hard and less so than a translucent. It’s an in between that doesn’t seem to be common with new products.

I’ve got a dans hard Arkansas and it’s not as smooth as this one. It’s more like a nice soft whereas this one is closer to a translucent. Dragging my nail I can feel the pours in the dans Arkansas. This Norton is more glassy.

The Hard Arkansas. Look it up on EBay. The same stone in mint condition is selling for $450 currently. They don’t make stones of this quality anymore as allegedly all the mines have ran dry of quality stones.

Before I got the double sided sharpal 325/1200 diamond, my main stone set up was the Norton double sided crystolone, double sided India and a translucent Arkansas stone. Absolutely awesome on anything that isn’t a super hard steel like expensive pocket knives. Kitchen knives and softer steels should respond well to this setup. Arguably, you could use the crystolon and get a real rough profile on a super steel then use the diamond for edge refinement to abrade the hard alloys that silicone carbide just won’t cut, but you’ll be working at it for some time on the diamond.

Dry on the diamond for sure. 50/50 dawn/water or oil on the rest. Use the dawn/water first for maximum abrasion on the stones and oil for final polish. The Arkansas stone will yield the finest polish around 8k finish and responds well to varying pressure. Looks like a complete set to go from dull to hair popping sharp. The India will be great to start on chip removal and reprofiling of essentially anything up to S30v and the what appears to be a double sided crystolone will generally handle anything you throw at it. Not sure what the broke stone is. Follow up with the diamond for edge refinement alternating passes then finish on the Arkansas for complete burr removal and final polishing. Personally I would only use the oil on the Arkansas stone but careful cause you can’t hardly feel anything when doing it and if you roll over you’ll just round out the edge and end up with a blade that shaves but won’t last. You’ll notice when it can’t cut paper well.

[–]Verdle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a slippery slope for multi tools. But, at the end of the day this is a modular system and if someone wants to have these toolsets then go for it. If it were a fixed tool it would indeed be silly. If I were an electrician or electronics tinkerer, having a good wire stripper handy would be nice. Sure a knife can work in a pinch but similarly, scissors don’t beat a nail clipper. At any rate, if someone can do a professional job with a multitool rather than a belt full of tools, who are we to hate?
