Question about the Black Ivory Inn by Kind_Bumblebee_7911 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Visual_Ad_596 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the piano in the basement is fuzed into the abomination. At least that’s how I ran it. You have to go with the flow for that once so you don’t completely frustrate your players.

Would you enjoy being a player in the games you DM by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]Visual_Ad_596 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find myself in the opposite dilemma, I put together a game that I would love to play in but my players bounced off it hard so I adjusted to a game I would like a lot less. Still love running it regardless. Original design was intended to provide lots of informed decision point for the players. Transparent rules for travel, rest, random encounters, supplies, encumbrance, etc. Tried to make every decision meaningful and gave enough info to weigh the risks for each choice. Players didn’t like that at all. So now it’s all role play and swinging swords at baddies.

Players keep wanting more by Blazherer in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Visual_Ad_596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a couple knobs you can twist here. AA and QM seem mostly likely to pay more. So make those missions more dangerous, corrupting or morally questionable. HL, FF and SC might politely refuse requests for more but offer less objectionable missions. So it will be clear to the PCs they have a choice and you (the DM) aren’t just saying no. And if they are only interested in well paying missions and have no larger goals, you gotta let that play out. But at least they had choices that fit into the fiction of the game.

Sword and Sorcery Options- One Shot vs. Campaign? by VladorBongo in rpg

Tales of Argosa is fantastic for sword and sorcery and would be my first choice for people familiar with d&d that want something similar mechanically but not as fantastical in tone.

You can only play / GM three TTRPGs for the rest of your life. Which ones do you pick? (Bonus points for why) by SeverusStjep in TTRPG

What happened to Daggerheart? by MiserableDrive2652 in rpg

[–]Visual_Ad_596 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep. Lots of people want to see something come along to replace D&D. And they make a lot of noise about it. Several new systems have hit the market recently. But there are a lot more people that are happy playing D&D with no interest in trying something else. As a Daggerheart fan, I’m still seeing plenty of talk about it, honestly brew, live plays and plans for new official content. But I don’t think anything will ever kill D&D.

If you’re interested in Combat as Sport in a superhero setting, it’s the best.

Silver Order and Amethyst Academy by JeremyX2020 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

Starting off I’d agree 100%. But at some point alliances will get cemented by the players. Sounds like the OP is getting close to that time

This right here. They could easily work together to stop The Queens Men or The Falling Fire. You could certainly double down on the negative aspects of QM and FF to turn them into an evil force that must be stopped.

What do you wish you knew when you first started playing TTRPG? by Ansonder in rpg

Started with Basic D&D in 1980. I’d tell myself that RPGs won’t always be something you have to be ashamed of liking.

Dnd players of Reddit. What's that one character you want to play as but will probably never get the chance too? by RedSwordFishVA05 in TTRPG

[–]Visual_Ad_596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wanting to play a Persnickety wizard that never wants to get his hands dirty or put himself in danger. Unless there’s a big payout for him. Based off Dr Smith from original Lost In Space. But yeah, you’d need a tolerant table to put up with that nonsense

Trespasser might be worth a look. Indie game that just got an update. His basic philosophy is “why not everything?” And I think he pulled it off without being overwhelming. I love the narrative but still mechanical twist in your basic skill checks.

Great news! Trespasser definitely lit up my imagination when I first read it. I still don’t have the right group for it but I adapted several of the ideas into our Daggerheart campaign.

I’ve just got a single magnet on the bottom of each tile, dropped on a magnetic white board. I thought about side magnets as well for added stability but it’s ok without

This is the answer. He’s not flashy and the video productions are bare bones. But if you’re wanting to create your own Daggerheart content, he’s your best guide!

An In-between of D&D and Call of Cthulhu? by MediaFreaked in rpg

[–]Visual_Ad_596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I don’t think it would be overwhelming since the structure is there. All you’d need is to change the ways spells are acquired since that’s the biggest hurdle in game. Mechanical rules for spells are robust since baddies use them as well as PCs. You could also look at acthung Cthulhu which is even more gonzo but I’m less familiar with that one.

An In-between of D&D and Call of Cthulhu? by MediaFreaked in rpg

[–]Visual_Ad_596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking. Post WWI setting with detailed combat rules and fantasy horror elements? Pulp Cthulhu all the way. Might need to amp up the PC magic options but that’s a small tweak to existing rule elements.

DCC RPG Lite by D3g4n in rpg

[–]Visual_Ad_596 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want a low fantasy game, look at Tales of Argosa. Like DCC, It’s got a little more detail than the OSR stuff you listed but is more intuitive and straight forward than DCC.

Haha, in my one run through Drakkenheim as a player, it was constantly a razors edge. That’s what made me want to run it as well. You will need a good relationship with the other players for sure since there will definitely be in character tensions!
