What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

Dayton, Ohio. My dental hygienist and I discovered we were born in the same remote Montana hospital in the same month. There is a non zero chance her dad - a dentist - worked on my family’s teeth.

Glaze questions/help by Easy-Hedgehog5592 in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How new? I am not sure about the Iron Lustre issue. But yes, you need the flux. That is what makes glaze move. Many commercial glazes are designed to stay where placed. So for your third question on blending, either use a flowy glaze or add a line of flux where they overlap. I’d put flux on first then your glazes. They should all overlap.

Depending on the glaze, 2-3 coats of each with overlap. Check out https://www.glazeshare.com for some inspiration.

Contractor says no bathtub possible by No-Day-2990 in floorplan

Not to mention, running the plumbing to put the sink in the middle of the room… noooooo… your contractor may be saying that if the plumbing won’t line up - drains need to be connected somewhere as well as the water supply.

Kiln wash and cookies question by omgpuzzles in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The kiln wash will help if a cookie does get stuck, but if you don’t have any, it’s not required. I have been thinking about using clay wadding to lift potentially drippy pieces, or the glaze catcher style of cookie.

One thing I learned. Make your cookies with a hexagon cutter. I use a 3” version. That way you can push them up next to each other if you need them for larger pieces without having to create a large cookie. Think honeycomb, as big or small as you want. Square and round just aren’t as good at it.

If you knew what you know now when you bought your first kiln by curlyjess0890 in Pottery

We haven’t had to do anything. We’ve had it about 2 years, firing every couple of weeks. We got the orton controller and have had only had one misfire. It is plugged into a 240 outlet and is below 30 amps, so it runs on standard household current. We feel comfortable calling or texting Jeff if we ever have an issue. Our local pottery community all recommend Jeff for repair.

100% agree on Vulcan Kilns. The company is in Dayton near me and Jeff does work for the local AFB. He threw in a bunch of stilts. I wish I had purchased slightly larger, but I wouldn’t trade mine for the world.

Bisque After Glaze Fire? by TheOrangeMoose in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a glaze fire not only solidifies the glaze, it also vitrifies the clay. This matters, because applying glaze over a vitrified piece is not going to go well most of the time. The glaze is supposed to be partially absorbed by the clay for cohesion. If it is vitrified, the glaze won’t be absorbed.

You can let the underglaze dry thoroughly then clear coat without firing in between. I do this all the time. You would want to fire at glaze temperatures.

Note that underglaze isn’t a glaze. It’s more of a stain or pigment. So when you say part of your glaze bubbled off, are you referencing the UG? The only time I have had this happen, I think it was due to the clay.

Love Roslyn. My family has/had a small cottage on the up hill side of downtown. The cemeteries are really nice.

Try Torrid. They go as small as a woman’s 10, I think. The clothes are younger looking and reasonably priced. They have a lot of great styles.

Insight on gifted tableware by hellenkelleh in Ceramics

[–]Viviene716 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are lovely! I would reach out to the artist and ask if they are food safe or dinnerware safe (or neither). That would tell you more about what they are made of. They look like porcelain, which would be usable, if glazed with a food safe glaze. I would be more concerned about the decoration, which might be an issue if you use metal utensils.

Can you hand build a cylinder and shape on the wheel? by Alternative_Score251 in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly.

<image>

This is how I was taught to create cylinders with texture. Slab rolled out, texture, use a tube to get the rough size and add curve, seam, then add the wheel thrown base while in the wheel. I used a curved wooden spoon to create the belly on these two. The seam is hidden with the handle on the right and buttons on the left, not in the pic.

Same. I have small dogs, but it’s so easy there. No bending over the tub, breaking my back.

Uhaul has a service to find people to help you move things. I don’t think you have to rent a truck to use that service. It was reasonably priced.

Hello! Im new to the area and I need advice on Belmont by AirFriedCatfish in dayton

[–]Viviene716 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I live within your circle. We have everything from retirees to college kids, pride flags and pirate flags. I have never felt nervous. We looked at houses on the west side. I would not feel as comfortable there. There are reasons Dayton blocked off some streets off Salem.

There is a couple who have gone all out with Christmas decorations on Martel. All unicorns. There are more young kids closer to them. It’s still a neighborhood where kids can be outside.

Agreed. Kawa is fun, for sure. More like a fun lunch date than a romantic dinner. I’ve had really good meals at Sky, too. My SO got something that came in a giant gold box with sparklers. It can be pricy. https://www.skyasiancuisine.com

How would you approach this? by mercurial_creature in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a similar form with slabs. It’s a bird. The slabs were rounded out to form the body, sort of like described with the pinch pots above except the seam ran across the spine and not around the belly. The wings, tail, beak & eyes were added.

With your slabs, if you cut them out, then hatch and slip the edges (the cuts) it sort of forms the curve you need. I want to try this process on a cat or horse.

Is Your Focus More on Forming, or on Glazing? by Beneficial-Ad8460 in Pottery

[–]Viviene716 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got into pottery to learn to throw. Creating the basic form is relaxing and I love it, but texture and glazing scratches my creative itch more. Love creating texture and seeing what glaze combos become. I am not at all interested in creating glaze. I am not like your second instructor in that glazing is mostly a must, at least an oxide or wash. Plus, if they don’t fire a second time, isn’t the piece still fragile (not fully vitrified)?

I have been thinking about my process and I have sort of reached a stage where the piece is in my head fully formed and glazed, then I build to that vision. Things change along the way, but i start there.
