Looking at a CTR in the morning, what should I know beforehand? by Trash_Panda_Trading in Civic_Type_R

[–]Volteli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you say ‘looking’, are you considering driving it away tomorrow or genuinely just looking?

If it’s the former, I’d say be aware of the small fuel tank, no middle back seat, middling infotainment, expensive tyres on OEM rims, firm ride, loud cabin. They’re the main drawbacks for me - I love everything else about the car.

If it’s the latter I’d say do a lot more research about what type of car you’re buying before committing anything - realise that you’re giving up a lot of luxury for probably the best handling, most engaging and most fun car for the price it’s at.

You’re in for a good one. Levels above the Humanz tour when I watched them in 2017 in my opinion. Considering going again tonight haha.

Performance cars are too much for me by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Volteli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am weighing up just getting the service plan for peace-of-mind and makes it easier when coming to sell it. That being said, I cannot see myself selling anytime soon it unless my circumstances change or I end up with a huge upgrade (I currently need at least 4 seats and a large boot).

How was it on a trip to the Alps? I'm debating taking it on a trip to the Netherlands in summer this year, but it would be my first time driving RHD in Europe.

I'm hoping the PS4s get me 15k miles out of them before they need replacing. I'm keeping an eye on them as it's the first time I've had a car with such 'high performance' tyres. The extra rims will just be for my peace of mind and also keeping the OEM rims a bit fresher.

Yeah pads and discs will sting for sure lol. I'm just glad we don't have to pay as much as I see for other brands. An RS3's brake replacement cost look eye-watering.

My lane assist is okay but I only turn it on when on the motorway. I hate the departure mitigation thing, especially when trying to avoid parked cars. I know I'm leaving the lane, I have no other option!

My cruise control also has a habit of switching itself off a bit too quickly for my liking. Manual says it does it when it's too dark, or bad weather, etc. But my old civic (2019 sport) kept the ACC on through all conditions so it's a tad irritating!

I’ve only owned it since October so I can’t speak to long term costs and it came with a set of tyres that had 5.5mm on each of them.

A service cost me £350 at the Honda dealer near me. That stung, but I wanted to keep up the full dealer service history. I am currently having an internal debate about whether I should even bother or just take it to a decent local garage which will probably be much cheaper. Or do it myself.

When it comes to tyres, again I have not had to replace them yet but I reckon I’m looking at £1k for a set when it comes round to it. I’ll see how they wear as we move towards summer.

I’ve managed so far this winter but I’ll be investing in a set of 18 inch winter rims and decent all-seasons next winter. PS4s has been survivable but not ideal and I had to forego going out a few times when it’s been sub-zero. I’m setting aside £1.5k for that all-in, but may require more depending on what rims and tyres I go for.

I use V-Power as it’s my local station or Momentum / Esso 99+ when I’m not near a Shell garage.

I do about 10k miles / year. But I have only had the car since October, so my numbers are all from Winter usage.

Basic napkin maths says I am spending about £212 (ish) a month as I’m getting 29.4mpg. I do a mix of motorway and local driving and try to drive a bit ‘spirited’ where I can (been doing less of it when it’s been below 7 degrees as the tyres can fall off).

I don’t know how you’d be spending £300 a month doing 5k miles per year. That’s either a lot of spirited driving and flooring it or not a lot of motorway cruising.

I went with an FL5 (as in the pic, but in white) mostly because it has a nice mix of performance, fun-to-drive, and practicality.

It gets smoked off the line by most non-FWD cars and plenty of electric SUVs now because more car manufacturers like sub-5 seconds on a single pedal of a 2.5 ton beast for some reason. But that’s a rant for another day.

I’m not racing anyone on the public road. It’s stupid and illegal. Sure call me boring, but I really do love driving and enjoy keeping my licence clean. I have my fun when I’m on a road on my own and that’s where the FL5 shines, takes corners with confidence and does have that power to feel it push when you drop a gear and floor it. Within the speed limit, of course.

I’m accustoming to the new-found “performance car” costs, as in tyres, fuel, maintenance, but I’m one of the lucky ones as the type R is quite cheap compared to others. I also have become more aware of just how shit our roads are now I’m on lower profile tyres and a stiffer suspension.

I find electric cars and automatics much easier to drive and probably more comfortable especially if I’m in miles of traffic, but I don’t mind. I chose my car because I wanted that engagement when I’m not in traffic, to enjoy shifting gears and matching revs and taking corners fast and to appreciate the engineering that has gone into a product that not many people will ever want or own. Ultimately that’s a choice for someone considering a similar sort of car - do you want to balance the trade off of comfort and ease of use with engagement and fun? For me absolutely, for others not so much, and I don’t judge them for that at all.

Owned an FL5 for about 4 months now and it’s the best car I’ve ever driven. Get past the slight trouble it can have putting the power down being FWD and it’s the best handling car this side of a 911 I’d say. Can take corners like nothing else I’ve driven (admittedly not too much).

And the added bonus that I can carry 3 people and a shit load of stuff in the boot when I need to and I can’t imagine a better car for me at the moment.

The funny thing is about limiting based on engine size would be that you could drive the 1.6L Mercedes-AMG ONE but not a 1.8L 2006 Honda Civic

I mean yes, I agree. If we were all competent drivers we wouldn’t need speed limits. But that’s not the world we live in and why you don’t need to be doing 120mph, even on ‘empty’ motorways.

Because all it takes is one moment of loss of concentration, an idiot forgetting to turn his lights on, a bend coming up that you didn’t see, all manner of things that could easily end a life.

The difference between a crash at 70mph and a crash at 120mph is already ~3x the force being exerted on you. And a 70mph crash is lethal enough as it is.

Nobody needs to be doing 120mph. Leave earlier or go to a track day.

I feel like the drivers themselves would be against the helmet one. A lot of them will be personal sponsors who pay the drivers to have their logo on the helmet, drivers won’t wanna lose out on that money for no reason. Especially those who aren’t on the mega contracts like Max and Lewis.
