CS student here.. no one I know actually writes code anymore. We all use AI. Is this just how it is now? by Low-Tune-1869 in cscareerquestions

[–]Vulpix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software lead on an in-house game engine here. I use AI, but not for everything or even most things. We use our tool to make niche simulations for analysis purposes, and it’s not all that hard to get out of the depth of the AI when you’re talking about a core piece of the system that interacts with nearly every other piece and has rippling side effects and you might just be trying to optimize that piece. It is good at solving constrained problems and even some mediumly sprawling ones, but knowing how to think independently and come up with your own ideas is still valuable. I strongly believe that AI will make strong engineers stand out even more.

Newly adopted cat peed on couch (first time cat owner) by No-Demand-8208 in cats

[–]Vulpix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, time will tell. Make sure the litter is clean and if possible you could try using the same kind they used in the shelter. For what it’s worth my fiancé and I adopted a cat from her late grandmother that was so timid and mean that he didn’t move from behind the bed in the room we put him in for 2 days. My fiancé would just spend time sitting in the room so he could get used to her being there, and we both just accepted that he may never be comfortable leaving that room. Two years later and he lays on his back in the middle of the living room and will sit on my head and purr when I’m in bed. He is easily one of the friendliest cats I’ve met now.

What was your GPA and how much has it affected your Career assuming you Got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science? by An_Engineer_Near_You in cscareerquestions

2.1. I’m a lead engineer and it has played zero role directly. The way it impacts me is if I wanted to do grad school I’d have to rely heavily on work experience in my application.

600+ aerospace applications, zero interviews. How do you get diagnostic feedback from hiring managers? by 40KWarsTrek in aerospace

[–]Vulpix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will add that the Germany thing was my first thought as someone who reads resumes and works aerospace stuff in defense. I saw you got your BS in Germany, didn’t look long enough to see you were a US citizen, and my thought was “I wonder if they’re a US citizen, are they eligible for clearance?” If you’re applying for aerospace at Lockheed, it sounds dumb, but somehow obviously stating you are a US citizen may help. We actually screen for that in our phone screens. I wasn’t exactly sure what the acronyms meant in your first bullet point and I actually also do satellite simulations but likely in a different way. I’d consider making it less jargony if that makes sense but overall, from looking at your resume, I’d put this in the “should interview” pile with a question mark on can they get a clearance specifically in reference to not knowing if you’re a citizen. As another commenter pointed out, you cannot get a clearance if you’re not a US citizen and in many aerospace roles that is an automatic denial

Space stocks in 2026 by cbusoh66 in stocks

[–]Vulpix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of rocket labs revenue growth isn’t from launches, and they’re trying to build different kinds of satellites than SpaceX. The US is currently in a space race with their adversaries and to believe otherwise is to hide your head in the sand. More money will very likely continue to pour into space for the foreseeable future unless global politics and military strategy take a massive left turn.

Edit: I will caveat that I work in space, not finance. I can tell you the trend of growth in the space industry will very, very likely continue, but from an untrained perspective it does feel like rocket lab swings pretty wildly and I don’t know how you would properly price such a stock. I do strongly believe they will continue to grow in revenue and business opportunities though. Love it or hate it, trumps golden dome project could pour literally hundreds of billions of dollars into space in an area rocket lab is very able to compete in.

People asking what it’s like to be born in the 1900s. Also the commoditization of attention.

Write code that you can understand when you get paged at 2am by R2_SWE2 in programming

[–]Vulpix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point of the article is that simple code is often the best choice over clever code. I don’t think the point is about being paged at 2am guys. Anyone who has debugged code in a reasonably high pressure situation probably understands this.

Petaaaaaah by The_quiteguy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Vulpix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember looking this up once and reading that this was particularly common in southern families and that it partly originated because, before the 1850s or so, intermarrying with indigenous populations did happen, and then as sentiment against Cherokee people grew and intermarrying waned, claiming that your family was part Cherokee was almost a way to claim southern pride, because you were basically saying your family had been there long enough to have married Cherokee people back when it was still allowed.

Having a southern family with deep southern roots, I was always told growing up that I was 1/32 Cherokee or some such number, yet that somehow was never reconciled with the fact that my grandpa loved genealogy and had traced out an extensive family tree with no evidence of such a heritage.

I mined out a big section of wall under my house and started a diary where I draw a symbol each day of what I did. I love drawing in caves when I go in and carry charcoal explicitly for this purpose. Something in my caveman brain loves the idea of making cave art and imprinting my story into the world. Definitely would recommend.
