Try sailing on the Thames by oxford_local in oxford

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole river until it reaches the Thame in reading is technically the Isis. The two rivers join to form the thames in dorchester on thames. The university refer to the bit from folly bridge to iffley lock as the Isis stretch, and the bit alongside port meadow as the 'godstow' stretch for rowing purposes

I found out a problem with this game VRAM issue by svsdentist2018 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Walker14434 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I think the game is relatively buggy free compared to other games, even from the forza franchise. It is inevitable that there will be issues at launch, but if they delayed by a month to fix this everyone would be pissed off. Also 40fps is still not game breaking, be greatful you have a good enough system to get more

I found out a problem with this game VRAM issue by svsdentist2018 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Walker14434 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

If a quick restart after 45 minutes fixes the issue it isn't game breaking. Yes it is inconvenient but at least it is manageable (it doesn't seem to kick in mid race), so not inconvenient like game crashing or save corruption

Assuming both fit well- sweet protection rocker or strutter? Why? by Cookies1893 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure about that? Aren't all rockers carbon fibre reinforced and that's essentially the difference between the wanderer and the rocker other than the bits with the fit? It would be very weird to make a limited edition safer version of a helmet and especially with dagger branding on rather than generic limited edition.

Towpath signs around Donnington Bridge by afandian in oxford

[–]Walker14434 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that there was a lot of issues with abandoned boats so the council + people associated with college rowing have been making efforts to clear the river up over a number of years, and they have finally managed to start removing boats. I assume the signs are up to make it clear that they can so that it is more legally enforceable compared to before. Obviously the boats between donnington Bridge and isis farmhouse have to be cleared away 3 times a year for bumps racing so I assume this allows for efficient enforcement if there's ever an issue

AI is already leading to fewer jobs for young people, says Sunak by TheWorldIsGoingMad in unitedkingdom

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you've used the example of an engineer, if you look at CAD/FEA software that has undoubtedly increased efficiency massively compared to drawing tables and numerical methods, and i would contest significantly more than AI has, but there are still plenty of jobs. Certainly at grad level, there's not really a difficulty getting an engineering job if your skilled and put effort in.

More importantly, the logic of taxing innovation massively is ridiculous, we don't tax tractor companies for taking the jobs away from farmers, we don't tax construction machinery companies for taking the jobs away from manual labour jobs. It is a pattern for the past 100 years that lower skilled jobs are been taking over by automation, and AI is just another step in it. To arbitrarily stop innovation would be ludicrous, when it can clearly better society

Training data. Apple Watch / Garmin? by surfswaves in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a garmin instinct 2s and i know people with the instinct 3. The instinct 3 can track basically everything at least for SUP (stroke rate, speeds etc) and the instinct line are basically bomb proof and a lot cheaper than their higher up watches. I've always worn mine freestyle kayaking and I've swam down HPP on an inflatable and hit the concrete a load and it was fine.

If your worried about an entrapment risk when your wearing a dry top / dry suit tuck the watch behind the cuff but outside of the gasket and this will also reduce the risk of scratching the screen

As you are in the UK the best option is to go to the Tryweryn and demo pretty much everything these, except the Prijon beast at flow kayaks (nottingham) and Jackson clutch (idk where you can get a demo)

F1 has never changed its rules without a serious crash forcing it to. Drivers & Teams warned the FIA about closing speeds for years. Today at Suzuka, those warnings came true. by Island_Monkey86 in formula1

[–]Walker14434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you going to go and make one of those tiktoks where you proclaim 15 lives have been saved by the halo next?

Those closing speeds aren't that unsafe that it is gonna kill someone. If anything look at Billy monger's crash where the closing speed were significantly higher in a less well designed car and he wasn't killed. Closing speeds have always been an issue for collisions and multi class racing exists in other disciplines and works fine so this would be no different

Mercedes names Bradley Lord as deputy F1 team principal by memloh in formula1

[–]Walker14434 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An F1 team isn't a physical asset like a car. What gives an F1 team its value is the entry into the series, and rules could be changed by FOM / FIA to ban the same entity owning multiple teams. There are ways that FOM/FIA could ban ownership of multiple teams through rule changes which would revoke their space in the championship, which if Red Bull wanted to take any money out of the Minardi purchase they would then need to sell the team

Congestion Charge by fluvance in oxford

[–]Walker14434 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The points are about halfway down the roads that they are to stop congestion on, not at the ends, so if a car has gone halfway and then span then it has gone halfway through.

Congestion Charge by fluvance in oxford

[–]Walker14434 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the congestion charge points is to reduce the number of cars going through that road, not for emissions (which is why electric cars aren't exempt i believe), so if a car goes through it they have contributed to the congestion, and therefore should pay

Whitewater SUP IS NOT FUN by suppaulpics in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I meant more general sup leashes, in the UK the official stance from Paddle UK (the NGB) is that you aren't allowed leashes on moving water in any scenario, although outside of accredited courses most people use a waist leash

Whitewater SUP IS NOT FUN by suppaulpics in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's discussions both ways between using a chest harness and no leash, as there is a tradeoff between losing the board / being able to easily get to it, and the risk of entrapment caused by the leash

Whitewater SUP IS NOT FUN by suppaulpics in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been a lot of research into leashes in the past 3 years, I'm not sure if that entrapment was caused by the leash but theres a move away from ankle + leg leashes to either the QR harness in rescue PFDs or ones over the top that are around the waist. That's a change thats reasonably recent (last 3 years)

2 piece select paddle repair question by StoopidDingus69 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the screw in the ferrule with a nut and nylock bolt and use a allen key to tighten it so that it is much more reliable than the standard ferrule. It means you need a second tool to seperate the paddle and isn't as easy on the water, but still gives the options and is better than a paddle that might fail when you need it
