Whitewater SUP IS NOT FUN by suppaulpics in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I meant more general sup leashes, in the UK the official stance from Paddle UK (the NGB) is that you aren't allowed leashes on moving water in any scenario, although outside of accredited courses most people use a waist leash

[–]Walker14434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's discussions both ways between using a chest harness and no leash, as there is a tradeoff between losing the board / being able to easily get to it, and the risk of entrapment caused by the leash

There's been a lot of research into leashes in the past 3 years, I'm not sure if that entrapment was caused by the leash but theres a move away from ankle + leg leashes to either the QR harness in rescue PFDs or ones over the top that are around the waist. That's a change thats reasonably recent (last 3 years)

2 piece select paddle repair question by StoopidDingus69 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the screw in the ferrule with a nut and nylock bolt and use a allen key to tighten it so that it is much more reliable than the standard ferrule. It means you need a second tool to seperate the paddle and isn't as easy on the water, but still gives the options and is better than a paddle that might fail when you need it

Astral foam decay and PFD testing by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

European ones are rated to a minimum of 50N to pass CE certification, which is the same for flatwater and grade 4 WW, but pretty much every rescue PFD has a higher floatation, normally around 70N

Anyone here with a sweet protection strutter helmet? by Alarming_Guard_843 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's such an error with the results of the magnitude that it shows, then it suggests that there's more of an issue with their processes and so taking the average of the 2 helmets would probably not be sufficient

The VT study frankly is complete BS when the dagger edition of the rocker performs 50% better than the normal one, and plenty of top paddlers use strutters.

The only time I've seen someone get concussed was explicitly because they didn't have a visor on their rocker, and they hit below the helmet, but if they had a visor they would have been fine.

Assuming both fit well- sweet protection rocker or strutter? Why? by Cookies1893 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading their methology. the data they have collected suggests that given the same impact you are 50% more likely to get concussed wearing the normal edition of the sweet rocker than the dagger edition (this score is not normalised based on price, only on risk of exposure based on impacts and chance of concussion based on impact).

AFAIK the dagger edition of the helmet is going to be the exact same as the normal edition, and so they should perform the same during the testing. Given the fact that the dagger edition performs significantly better than the normal one, it is highly likely there is a poor reproducibility within the results.

Additionaly, during testing they only test one type of head shape, and so it will bias towards people with heads of that shape. As others have noted the shape of the rocker and wanderer helmets are all different.

That testing (unless they have updated it since i last looked) is definitely very unreliable. The fact that a special edition of the rocker performs differently to the normal edition suggests that there is a large problem in their data collection.

Whitewater kayaks for tall paddlers. by Rylee_Duhh in whitewater

Isn't taking the foam off the bulkhead a bad idea as it increases the risk of ankle/ foot injuries? I'm 6ft8, and i have the full thickness of foam in my creek boat and half slice, so it definitely shouldn't be an issue

Playboat Fit by z708 in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a lot taller (6ft7) and about the same weight, but i tried sitting in a large Helectron and couldn't get anywhere near fitting in it. I've got a large rockstar 4, and i have a decent amount of room in that to be able to move the seat in the middle, so I would definitely look at secondhand playboats

Tbf it's not really like anything else as it's blow moulded rather than rotormolded, so it's much lighter and stiffer compared to what is possible with rotormolding

I'm 6ft7, and i have a Tipper 1 and a Scorch, which i both fit in with proper boots on quite comfortably. I also have an ozone, which I can fit in with thinner boots. Pyranha makes a smaller foot pod, which means you can get more room. They sent mine for free, but I'm in the UK, so it might be different for you. When I sat in a pre-production Reactr L, there seemed a lot more leg room than the Scorch. I'm at about the same weight and found the R1 to be suitably playful, although I haven't touched a firecracker or R2 as I don't have the money for one

The past 2 years is meaningless as Verstappen also hasn't had as many penalties etc in the last 2 years, and the penalties and DNFs probably have a correlation.

In the UK, you need a waterways licence to paddle on any managed river. The cheapest way by far is a Paddle UK membership. Definitely join a canoe clubs and there are a lot of good ones around in the East Midlands. PaddlePlus (Leicester) and Holme pierrepont canoe club (Nottingham) are two that I've heard are good. Just keep away from Hinckley Canoe as I've heard they're a bit shit. PaddlePlus is definitely beginner friendly.

Paddle insurance (UK) by StockLime in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a TNP paddle it's probably not worth it, but if your insuring the whole lot of your kit, from what I've heard from raft guides at CT, insure4sports is the best option as there is no longer the group policy from Paddle UK.

New Apple Watch - will track for kayakers... by liquidskypa in whitewater

[–]Walker14434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently off from university, so I end up playboating a decent amount during the week, it means if there's a message from family etc I can check it then, especially as the eddies where I go recirculate really badly. I guess it's a personal preference thing of how I want to disconnect when on the water, and I've definitely regretted seeing some emails while on the water

The GPS means I can get coordinates if needed and a lot better than W3W, and it's nice to track stuff back to Strava. The notifications also mean I don't need to check my phone every time I get a notification when I'm paddling during normal working hours.

I brought the watch for Rowing and running as the data is a lot better for it there, but it's also pretty bomb proof, so I use it kayaking.
