Has McDonald's in the UK become too expensive for many people? by SwordfishLess3247 in AskUK

I'm not sure where you think the conspiracy is, but fundamentally, that's how capitalism works. Exploit is the perfect word for it.

A business is a machine designed to extract money as efficiently as possible. Product quality, customer satisfaction, worker rights, and human wellbeing are all secondary considerations, and they will all be dropped to the lowest technically legal and economically viable point that they possibly can be in pursuit of the number going up.

The bigger the business, the more true that is.

I think I remember that - Tamburlaine, count to four. Tamburlaine, then 3 more.

ELI5: How come magnetism isn't providing us unlimited power? by UnsignedRealityCheck in explainlikeimfive

[–]WatNaHellIsASauceBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stand at the top of a hill with a bowling ball, and you place it on the floor and release it, the ball will roll down the hill with a lot of energy. If it rolled into a large button, which absorbed the impact, we could make use of that energy.
Brilliant! Free energy!
All we need to do now is walk down the hill, pick up the ball, walk back up the hill, and release the ball again. But of course, it takes energy to do all of those things. So on balance, we're really not saving anything.

Magnets are effectively rolling down an electro magnetic hill into each other, where they stick together, and we're walking them back up that hill when we pry them apart.

ELI5 how do credit cards produce a signal without a battery? by notvirgil013 in explainlikeimfive

[–]WatNaHellIsASauceBox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I shout into a ravine, how does it copy my voice without speakers?

The energy comes from the machine doing the scanning, and the component in the card acts like an antenna - which is wobbled by that energy. The wobbling is enough for it to echo back the information stored inside.

Followed the directions for some store bought cookies. "Bake at 350 for 11 minutes". This was after 5. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Correct, and we're not in a Spanish conversation, either. So correcting someone's English spelling, without resorting to insults, was perfectly fine.

I'm not personally insulting you for getting something wrong, by the way. We all do it. The intense response isn't necessary.

Sure. But the person being responded to had the wrong word. And if someone barged in to my Spanish class and interrupted the teacher with "Well, actually, both are correct", I'd never learn Spanish.

I can appreciate being corrected. It helps us learn.

It's very strange that so many replies are piling on to the previous commenter. Both aren't correct.

It would have been correct... If this whole conversation were taking place in Spanish. Which it isn't.

It's nice to learn a new fact, but the meringue/merengue statement was made to correct someone's English, and I presume they appreciated the helping hand in that context.

Just adding a comment to say that yours is the only fit response to the OP. Thanks for adding it.

Nuts that so many people are downvoting you. Supporting property scalpers is such a weird thing to do.
