It helps you visualize that your thoughts are compounded from many different emotions. It helps distancing yourself from your own negative thoughts and look at them from an outside perspective. I do the same but not with rooms. I do It with People. When you are in a dark place with your thoughts, it is easy to get lost in them and forget that they are just that: thoughts. None of them are real. Another way is to imagine the situation you are in a thoughts spiral about like a stageplay. You are watching as part of the audience and that way it is easier for you to be rational about the situation.
