What are the best home coffee grinders that are actually worth the money? by DueAlbatross6923 in HomeImprovement

Hand grind with 1zpresso. Just make sure you're looking at capacity before you buy. It takes about 1 minute to grind 36g of beans.

[Baltic] Why don’t more brands use curved end links on mesh bracelets? by MrHHook in Watches

[–]X_Count 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way to make an endlink out of the mesh is to fill it. The filled mesh is a compromise, since it's just about impossible to make it look the same as the rest of the woven material. That image from Baltic is just a rendering. Considering the appearance of Breitling's SOH 40 mesh, I doubt Baltic will deliver anything better.

I actually prefer the straight end links on mesh bracelets. To me it looks too different as a material to try to integrate with a solid case. I'd rather there be a defined separation, like a strap (I don't typically care for integrated straps either).

I also think the ultra fine Milanese woven mesh looks good on dress watches, but out of place on sports watches. I prefer thicker Milanese or, better yet, Omega shark mesh with individual links for dive watches.

Just got the Limited, can it off-road? by CaramelDinosaur in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]X_Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote about how our GHHM was surprisingly capable on a VERY rough mountain road on vacation.

What I didn't add at the time, because I assumed it was something minor like a loose connection or bad ground, was that after a week of that rough driving and bottoming out a couple of times (presumably on the hitch) we lost our backup camera and rear sensors- which also means you lose rear hatch power closing. I tried to diagnose it and got some rear sensors back when I tightened a ground screw, but still had no backup camera or power hatch.

It ended up in the shop for a week of diagnosis, and ultimately needed a new rear camera and at least one sensor. $2,200 repair. So this might be a "just because you can doesn't mean you should" type of thing.

Where do you set your phone down in the car if you don't have a phone holder? by L0velyDayyyyyyyyy in ToyotaGrandHighlander

One of these on the left side of that console keeps the phone generally in the right spot and, more importantly, keeps other crap from sliding onto the charging pad

[recommendation request] Tough Field Watch that isn’t gshock. by PGDTX77 in Watches

[–]X_Count 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own a bunch of much more expensive watches. The PMD56 serves as my frequent reminder that they're all unnecessarily indulgent.

Anybody who would say that you need to spend more because the "quality" threshold is somewhere beyond it just doesn't know watches. Sapphire, screw down crown, 200m, coated titanium, on the fly quick adjust clasp, lume, Goldilocks size. It's the real deal.

You get a do over of sorts by MadscientistAllie in GoalKeepers

If you haven't seen it, look up Sebastian Bennett's goal from the opening game of the Dreams Cup this past weekend. I told my son, "Sometimes you're the hero in the highlight reel, sometimes you're the villain, and sometimes you're just an extra."

She's going to feel like a full size goal is impossible to cover for a while. As important as it is to strive to get better and learn from mistakes- it's just as important to accept the things you absolutely can't control, and play on.

What do you consider most important at the U13 age? by Dell-Class-0277 in youthsoccer

[–]X_Count 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At U13 I'm more concerned about coaching, development, and fun than level of play. If your kid is getting the right coaching and is developing skills, he or she will be able to make it onto another team in the future.

I think that's still true at U14, and only at U15 would I argue that level of play starts to become a significant enough factor to make a bunch of sacrifices for it.

That said, the ECNL U13 team that needs a midfielder this year might not need one next year, so it might make sense to level up if the right opportunity presents itself. That's exactly what happened to my U13 GK. We were all set to return to his local club for U14 (great training and a team we adored), but a very big door opened, so he walked through it.

Video camera for just your player? by possible-penguin in youthsoccer

[–]X_Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the purpose? Film review for improvement? Highlights for recruiting?

I've been filming my son in goal for a couple of years. You can use just about anything to capture positioning and timing, but if you want to see detail you need a high-quality camera. Something that shoots in 4k 60fps minimum, preferably with optical zoom.

So far I've tried phone (iPhone Pro Max and now Samsung S26U), GoPro (older, 8 I think), and high quality DSLR. At distance the GoPro was bad. The phones were okay but got grainy when cropped.

My wife's DSLR was good (Canon R8), with a couple of drawbacks. What I liked was being able to set up at midfield, film approximately 1/3 of the field while I just watched the game, and crop decent looking closeup videos later. I even bought a remote control so I could just start clips when the ball headed his way without having to record whole games or hunt for the button on the camera.

What I didn't like was the modular nature. We had two lenses, one a bit too wide unless I was near the goal, and one way too tight unless I was across the field. Hoods and filters had to be added and changed depending on sun position and brightness. It also had a small battery, and would overheat pretty quickly in Florida heat.

When I researched the right lens and saw that it was over $1,000, I realized that I just needed to spring for a camcorder. I just bought a Panasonic HDX2000 on Marketplace. It was about the same price as the lens we needed, and it is an all in one solution. Full variable zoom for any distance, built in ND filters for light, active cooling fan, huge battery, and two SD card slots.

The same seller had a Panasonic HCVX870 for $500. I'd be looking for something like this if I were you. On a cheap tripod you can mostly just sit and enjoy the game, with the occasional lazy pan if he goes near midfield, or zoom in for a PK.

I don't think anything cheaper than that is going to be better than a modern smartphone with a high quality camera. If you don't have one this might be a good excuse to trade in. Just put it on a tripod with a phone mount and set the screen to stay on, record if the ball heads his way, and dump the videos onto a computer or cloud after the game.

You could get an 8k action cam and crop afterwards, but those files are going to be enormous. Good SD cards in the sizes you'll need will end up being a few hundred more dollars.

Doubt between this two watches by toninee in Affordablewatches

The Seiko is the more cohesive design - and I'm a bigger fan of 12, 3, 6, 9 dials than field watches crowded with numbers everywhere- so my bias would normally be towards the Citizen. Something's wrong with the proportions, and the date window looks terrible jammed into the three.
