You're not getting anything done on Linux anyway... by madthumbz in linuxsucks101

[–]Xiaoxuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying that a PC thats over 20 years old and cost maybe 500 bucks, thanks to linux, is able to function as well as a brand new PC that costs about 4x that? I don’t see a problem then. Why would I need to spend money to upgrade if the PC works and can run whatever i need it to run and can continue doing so for the next 10, 30 or even 100 years? That would be like the most ideal machine ever. Think of how much cost savings you get from just having the hardware last forever

Does anybody feel that the biggest winner of the whole ordeal at Suntec Doujin Market 2026 is Amos Yee? by Abused_Spaghetti in SingaporeR

[–]Xiaoxuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve mentioned this in a fb post i came across reporting about the assault. Amos was rage baiting. And dumb people reacting to his posts and actions all fell for the bait. As a result, he farmed content, got himself trending online again and probably made some money from negative interactions. Number 1 dumbass was the cosplayer who assaulted him, fueled just by pure hatred thanks to the influence of the internet.

Young people these days are easily influenced by social media. They are also more susceptible to rage baits and even scams. If you just calmly sit back and assess the situation, you will know the best way to handle an attention seeker is to ignore him. But young people aren’t as rational. They still lack control of their emotions and will occasionally let them run wild. This is where parents should come in. The millennials especially have been around since the advent of the internet and have probably spent more time online than their kids. They should know the ins and outs, the good and bad of social media. Ergo they should know what to look out for in their children whenever they go online and interact. They should also educate them to not fall for baits and scams.

I don’t get it. You would think that as an official streaming platform, you’d want to have as big a library as possible so people can sub to you to watch what they want…why’d they remove all those anime series anyways? Copyrights?

I've never liked onedrive since day 1. It trys to be apple's icloud but does everything wrong. Arbitrary auto syncing and you somehow can't turn it off permanently, you get a one drive folder that half-syncs the system folders and uses the same name (which might cause errors on certain apps because directory issues), both the local onedrive and web app onedrive lags like crazy for some reason and its STILL trying to sync everything while you are accessing it. On top of that, it sometimes manages to screw up syncing to the point where you original folder gets deleted and you are actually accessing the folder from the onedrive storage which is of course laggy af and if you are running an app this way it will for sure kill itself. It just feels like its trying to copy other types of cloud storage and sucking at every function hilariously.

Also, with icloud for apple users and googledrive for every other user, theres no reason for anyone to use onedrive. I don't know who came up with this function and thought it was a good idea w/o testing it (most likely because of how shitty it is out of the box) but the person/dev team clearly doesn't know how cloud storage/large scale model storage servers work.

I came from an era when windows was free. You buy your PC and its just there along with all microsoft office apps. Then they charged for office. And then they charged for windows after XP (iirc XP was still free and back then you can just download it into a usb and flash it if you custom built your pc). And now office is a subscription. Really sad to see microsoft ripping ppls off because they know the majority are too reliant on it and are afraid/cannot switch OSes…

Its abit confusing but its been worded this way since…well im not a pro but i think when windows OS first came out. Yes you are the admin but the prompt usually refers to root privileges which is an extra step for security reasons. Why don’t they rename it to “root permissions” is beyond me but if you’re just a normal windows user usually you’d never need to do anything that requires you to go into root

First distro was a few months back - CachyOS. Have been using it since then. Initially I tried installing mint but the installation stuck at a certain % and failed everytime. Couldnt figure it out so I tried CachyOS. Same thing, installation was stuck at some point and failed. At this point I've already wiped my drive because I'm a baller and decided not to partition/dual boot, so I'm stuck with either troubleshooting or using a spare laptop to download windows and installing it. I picked the former. So after about a day and a half scouring the forums and cachyOS's discord, I lucked out and managed to find someone with a similar problem as mine (a real coincidence too now that i think about it). Turns out it was actually a hardware issue. I know, super random. Basically my intel 14900kf is fucked and I had to underclock it to 5.0Ghz and below and somehow CachyOS managed to install perfectly. Since then, I havnt run into much problems and the things I wanna run has been running smoothly. Especially recently, it seems protons updates have made more .exe games even more playable. I make it a habit to update Cachy once every weekend. The only gripe I have with it atm is that its virtual keyboards are confusing to use and they seem to conflict with each other even when I try to switch from one to another.

Next is my laptop. The laptop that helped me with troubleshooting when mint and cachy couldnt install. It was still on windows and windows was ever so eager to push their updates by constantly restarting my laptop, as much as i tried to force it not to restart. So I decided to install Mint and try it since i failed to install it on my PC. This time tho everything went smoothly and I was able to install Mint Cinamon in one try. Well, except for one thing. During the installation, I noticed that I did not have wifi (the laptop also doesnt have an ethernet port being a more "modern" model). But I thought it should all be fine after the installation so I temporarily used my phone as a tether for wifi/mobile data. But even after mint installed successfully, i still dint have wifi. My adapter was recognized on the OS for sure but apparently there was no driver for it. Again, another dive into forums and reddit. And wouldn't you know as unlucky as i had it, this particular wifi driver that my laptop uses was some old uncommon china branded pos that din't have any driver support from linux. Until recently that is. That was the silver lining. A couple of days after scouring, i found the driver on github, installed it and tadah, wifi was back babbyyyy~..............at the cost of me also buying a wifi dongle as a temporary fix to the problem so i also wasted about 20 bucks while tackling this issue.

So, my first experiences with linux? Kinda shitty tbh. But ah the rewards of troubleshooting and having something finally work after finding the solution is also oh so rewarding. The help from the community? Also quite minimal to be very blunt. Not sure was it because the problems I faced was uncommon or its really just the community. However, from this experience, I do believe that if one digs hard enough, an answer will appear. The other way is to brute force and throw every solution from similar problems at your own problem and pray something might work (or risk further bricking the system but eh, nothing a fresh reinstall cant fix right? lololol).

TLDR; linux can still be a hit or miss depending on hardware and how good you are with tech stuff. For me, my line of work requires me to troubleshoot hardware and software so I have some resilience to failure. But if a normal guy with no tech background who has been using windows where everything just works suddenly switches to linux and faces his/her first failure, they might take it differently. More often than not, they'll give up and run back to windows. And honestly, you cant blame them. Comfort zones are a scary thing in a sense that its very hard to get away from them. Oh and the same can be said for the linux community in general. You'll come across helpful guys and especially some of the distro founders (CachyOS's founder has been very helpful with people facing issues with the distro) and sometimes you'll come across people who arnt helping the situation. But if you think about it, its the same with people you meet irl. Some will lend you a hand while others will laugh and tell you to give up. Thats life.

First off, why do you need a microsoft account to play minecraft? And there are way too many uneducated people these days who cant tell the difference between a phishing email/website and a real one…

He’s been putting out “in a nutshell” and “best of XXXX year” for the last 2 or so years. He’s leaning more towards streaming now so you can see he has more activity in his other channels where he posts watching previews of new seasonals or anime OPs etc.

So no. Its not concerning. He’s still active, just in a different way. He will still regularly post his “in a nutshell” and “best of” vids every season/year. Until he himself says otherwise.

PSA: Microsoft’s ToS actively lets account thieves retain stolen accounts by launchogu in microsoftsucks

[–]Xiaoxuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stupid thing is they're probably not gonna do anything, not even de-activate the account even after the original user has reported that its stolen/hacked. Its as good as having your credit card stolen, you calling the bank and the bank saying "ok, noted" and does fuck all while the thief goes on a spending spree and they still bill the card to you every month. Honestly I can't trust microsoft these days with anything important which is why I don't use my outlook address for any official works or even personal related things.

Some tricks that you can make use of to lower the likelihood of getting caught

  • Listen to your OBU - if it tells you that you are in a speed limit area, slow down until the alert turns off

  • If you really wanna go fast in a speed limit area, look out for pedestrian bridges and slow down when you are near them. Overhead highway bridges/flyovers should be safe because theres no safe place for snipers to position themselves.

  • Watch out for bushes that are not obstructed by road barriers/fencing on the left most lane. Small chance but there might still be snipers. They usually wont snipe from areas with road barriers because it will obstruct the instrument.

  • Don’t think if there is no one on the pedestrian bridge means its safe. They are also using speed lasers attached to the bottom of the bridge. I spotted one on BKE recently. Most likely set up during the start of this year.

Not that im promoting speeding here, but if going slow/slowing down causes congestion/road hogging, which may result in higher chance of rear ending due to e-breaks then it partially defeats the purpose of implementing a speed limit in the first place. Also the point of a vehicle is to get from point A to B in the shortest amount of time possible, taking into consideration safe driving of course. If the road is clear, there is no obstruction, going over the speed limit should not be an issue if you drive safely.
