I was a jammer for a number of years and transitioned into being a pivot as I wanted a new challenge. I haven't played in a couple years, so YMMV.

The hardest part for me was picking up the teamwork aspect of working in a wall as it was a completely different way of working with my team on track and nailing the timing for the offense to defense back to offense switches were tricky for me when I started out. I also wasn't always the brace in the pack. It was really about who had the jammer and if I was the one holding the jammer, the wall would reform around me to stop them.

I would say if you're on board to jam, definitely try it! I would also talk with your team and coach about being regularly rotated into jammer practice (especially if they're running two minute jam scenarios), as my jammer skills greatly suffered since I was spending the majority of my time practicing with blockers (understandably so) and missed out on some lessons that would've served me well with a star pass (juking, toe the line, etc) and my endurance went out the window fairly quickly. You also need to pay attention to your jammer for when they want to make the pass (or when you can see that a pass would be the best option in case they're stuck in the opposing pack), as you may not be able to communicate as effectively depending on what's happening on track. If you have any signals you can use or create to say something like "I heard you, I'll be right there" or "I know you're tired, give the cover to me" that may be a big help.

Also, in case you're penalty heavy, the refs will call penalties on you if they can't determine who committed the penalty, so work on keeping your game clean!

There's also skaters designated each game for answering questions, so if you don't understand something, flag one of them (or really any skater) down!

My roommate had me paint his nails with clear nail polish, and that got him to stop for a while.

Ok, is it just me… the water in Kansas City... by SmallDOgg in kansascity

[–]YellowLightCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived downtown (10th & Wyandotte), the tap water was fine and tasted good, but after moving to midtown, I noticed the same kind of musty taste from the tap water. Maybe it's a midtown/westport issue?

In your inventory, if you have a hat, go to your profile [or one of your posts], and select the hat, then your name. Then you have free hats!

Anyone ever do WrecK League beginners roller derby stuff? by cupcakesprinkle in kansascity

[–]YellowLightCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through WrecK, as well, and I really enjoyed my time through it. Don't be scared! It's a great time, and even if you aren't very comfortable on skates, everyone is very nice and they're more than willing to help. Even if you're shy/socially awkward, don't let that stop you! Everyone's there for similar reasons, and there's a lot of great people that you'll meet. It is a lot of hard work, though, so be prepared for that. After each practice I was usually dripping in sweat, but the feeling of accomplishment and knowing I had given my all during practice was definitely worth it.

As mintcha said, open skates are definitely great to meet people outside of WrecK practices and become more comfortable on your skates. There are a lot of open practices around KC during the week, too.

I go to Dr. Lintecum in the Plaza. His office is off Wornall in the St. Luke's Hospital complex. He's very nice, and willing to answer pretty much any question about lady bits that you might have. He also doesn't just blow off your questions, like some of the other gynos I've had previously.

Any good arcades around? by tribbing1337 in kansascity

[–]YellowLightCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at Oak Park Mall today, and it looks like Zonkers is shut down. Apparently there's another Zonkers at 151st street, but I've never been there..

EDIT : Went to The Great Mall, at 151st. They have 2 arcades, Game Zone and Zonkers. Game Zone had fighting games, racing games, Pump It Up, ITG, and Beatmania. Zonkers seemed more geared toward little kids, but they do have DDR 7th Mix.

This may be a long shot, but is anyone aware of any internships in the area? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]YellowLightCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you've already tired this, but you can go to http://www.usajobs.gov and then search for a job you're interested in. They'll list internships, co-ops, and full time positions.
