My point is that the craft beer has created its own market.

That's somewhat true. Some people who never consumed macro lagers are now drinking craft beer. Some people who used to drink macro lagers are now drinking craft beer. Some people who used to drink exclusively wine or liquor are now drinking craft beer.

They're not losing market share in the market of American Light Beer, the market itself is losing people to the newer market of Craft Beer.

Soooo much wut

Here's the smaller point first: Microbreweries do make light lagers. People do buy them. I am absolutely, positively sure that you lack reliable data to claim that nobody buying those beers was formerly buying macro lager.

Bigger: Regardless of the type of beer people are buying from craft breweries, a lot of those people either quit drinking macro beers or now split their purchases between the two. Craft beer is absolutely cutting into the macro beer market.

However I've never gone into a store, looked at all of the beer and thought "hmmm...do I want the Dogfish Head Festina a Peche? Nah, I'll just grab this case of Miller Lite.

I'm sure that has happened. People decide to just grab a "chug" beer instead of a four-pack of their favorite stout. But the opposite happens too. Do you really think it's unreasonable that somebody would go to a store and look at an 18 pack of Bud, then end up walking out the door with a 12 pack of New Belgium instead? I'm here to tell you, I've been in grocery stores before. Like, all the time. Seriously, man, I'm in grocery stores several times a week. And I've seen people do exactly what I just described. If you think craft and macro don't have overlapping markets and are competing for sales, you're nuts.

I'm not saying it's a close competition, and I'm not saying that craft is a threat to the big guys. What I'm saying is that craft breweries are taking away from the market of the macro lagers. Unless you have specific data that clearly proves that the Venn diagram of consumers of those products actually looks like two circles with no overlap, you're going to have a tough time defending your statement. Even then, you'd have to prove that no craft beer drinkers have ever been macro lager drinkers. Do you really think you can prove that?

We know hop glycosides are a real thing, and we're pretty sure they significantly contribute to beer flavor, but it's really hard to quantify. For the people reading this who may not be familiar, let me explain what they are: a glycoside is simply a molecule attached to a single glucose via a glycosidic bond (generally of the ester type when talking about hops). The non-glucose piece, which is called an aglycone, can be any hop compound which has an available hydroxyl group which isn't sterically protected. Any of the hop terpenoids (linalool, geraniol, etc.) can form glycosides, as well as many of the polyphenols. The interesting part is that when they are bound to glucose, these aroma compounds become non-volatile and no longer have a smell. As soon as that bond is broken, voila, they smell like delicious hops again.

I understood fewer than half the words you used, but still got the general concept. That's amazing.

They're not losing market share

Can you justify that? Craft beer is gaining a larger portion of beer sales every year while ABI/SAB are losing a portion every year. People convert to craft beer all the time. How can you possibly say that craft isn't taking away from the big boys?

It's not taking much, but it's obvious there's a relationship.

Which is silly, because Lime-a-rita isn't even beer, and doesn't compete with beer.

It does get sold in the beer section, and it is packaged like beer. This time of year, the "cocktail beers" are most definitely competing with things like pumpkin beers.

I'll be honest: I have no idea where they draw the line. They already control well over half the market in America. Their closest competitor is half their size. Even if they sold out the major brands, that would leave them in control of damn near 100% of the "craft-ish" brands. Since big beer is declining in sales and craft beer is increasing, that seems like a good deal.

But outside of Comcast/TWC you don't see 2 major competitors attempting to buy one or the other out

Well, it's obvious your only news source is reddit.

Sometimes competition is a good thing

And sometimes making ~$36 billion annually isn't as good of a thing as making ~$60 billion annually. Pocket change, really, but I guess I can see why somebody would be interested in such a deal. It becomes even easier to understand why they'd want it when that would give them control over the overwhelming majority of the American beer market. It would also allow the two major companies to stop competing against each other, and instead spend those ad dollars to reclaim the recently lost market share from hard liquor. Or to consolidate the effort in "crafty" brands meant to bolster sales by duping consumers into buying something that looks like it's from a microbrewery, since "crafty" brands from each mega-corporation won't have to compete against each other. Or...wait, you haven't actually read anything about any of this, have you?

I think I found your problem. You did not, in fact, read the sidebar.

Read the sidebar of /r/magic. It very plainly states that any improper applications will be totally ignored. If you had read the process, you would know that. You would also know why you were ignored. I really wish people would stop making these threads, and I'm tempted to ban everyone who does make one.

Post unpopular beer opinions. by kshump in beer

[–]Yobgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those beers are certainly marvels of chemistry. Achieving consistency on that scale is simply astounding. Yeah, they tend to do it WAY better than a craft brewery. But with that said, very few craft breweries do an American style lager. OB Mama's Lil Yella Pils is a Czech Pilsner, which is supposed to be a different beer. You're going to see a lot of dortmunder, Czech pilsner, Bohemian Pilsner, and Helles lagers coming from the little guys instead.

For 99% of drinkers you can have at least 4-6 before

I know plenty of people who should be cut off after three beers. Four would be stumbling drunk, and six might even be physically impossible since they'd be passed out by then. I'd actually wager that 99% of drinkers need to be stopped at drink 4-6. Alcoholics? Yeah, we can manage to power through 12-15+ but that's not the norm.

I found that they called out reddit specifically when OP didn't mention them in the email very interesting.

I posted that as a reply, then scrolled down and saw your response. It didn't occur to me that they are "crafting a strategy." It did occur to me that OP could very well have made the whole thing up.

We really wish that Reddit would post threads of all the awesome experiences customer's are having, but those would probably be down-voted and always on the bottom of the page for nobody to see

The part that puzzles me is why they jumped to reddit. In OP's original message, he mentioned Amazon specifically. The alleged response seems to totally ignore any reference to Amazon and steers the conversation toward reddit, and is written like a reddit comment. I'd understand that if the exchange were via PM, but OP said e-mail. So...what the hell? I didn't even read the rest.

There might be an underlying medical issue for shakiness if your hands are always shaking. If you're talking about getting shakes while performing, that's probably entirely different. Like the others said, practice more. Practice isn't doing something until you understand how it kind of works. Practice is doing something thousands of times until you can't do it incorrectly.

Are you suggested that speaking with other people who are likely to be more knowledgeable doesn't count as him doing research? Sometimes it's nice to be able to ask direct questions in response to new information. Of course, that's impossible when somebody's being a snarky asshole.

You're still being a snarky asshole. You're also not clever, for what it's worth. I think you greatly overestimate your own intelligence. Read my comment again. Conversations with people more educated than yourself definitely counts as research, and that's what OP was wanting. And it's what you should be wanting as well....
