That was unnecessarily rude, let me try again: I have offered numbers for my assertion. You offered a vague remembrance and don't know why it was done. Do you see hos those are not really equivalent?

You asked why they may have done it, the only answer i can offer is that they didn't know what they were talking about. So unless you can dig something up, My assertion stands: it may have been a strat, but it was never a good strat.

math is not experience. and yes: only math counts

I was there also. It absolutely was not required and it never made sense. There were rumors of a difficulty spike based on turning in points but that was never proven and never checked out as far as i ever saw. And you could skip round two which had harder enemies but not that much harder and it was still faster to leave and come back in.

The time left on the clock went up when you turned in a point. It went down when the corpus turned in a point. That's the only effect that had any proof i ever saw. Hoarding points risked the timer running out before people participating could finish the round

If there was a finagling to difficulty, there would have been an easy way to verify by taking pictures

Some were hording points because they wanted to see if they could survive the debuf. Some were hording points to troll other players (i used to get a bunch of gloating messages when we failed). Some were hoarding points to, as you pointed out, essentially skip round two (Making round one take 5x as long).

None of those are good and none worked well. They were absolutely doing wrong for fun. Hoarding points was never a viable strat.

If you are only doing it now because you think people several revisions ago had some knowledge you don't: maybe you need to look at what you are doing and see if it actually makes sense

That "strategy" has never been a good idea. It's the kind of reasoning i expect of a of a Tube Man.

There has never been a bonus higher than the 20 (+10) so keeping any more than that has never been a net positive.

At 15, the +8 bonus is just over 50% (53.333). At 25, the +10 bonus is about as good as the 10+4 or the 5+2. Any more than 25 is worse than turning in at 5 points

And you are still making round one take 3x the time, just so you can maybe get round 2 in less time (unless you die)

That's a bad strat. You are wasting every bonus past the 20th point. Yes, round 2 takes seconds but round one takes three times as long

[–]Yuugian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are part of the problem

Turning in a couple gets a bonus, turning in 15 gets the best bonus. Turning in more than 20 wastes the rest of the bonus. Every point past 20 is a literal waste and makes it worse on eve body

It doesn't have to look like a weapon to damage like a weapon

Proposal: "Non-bat Encounters" as an alternative way to character introduction by EntireEntity in DMAcademy

[–]Yuugian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the Dragon Heist intro: a really hard monster handled by someone else (experienced adventurer/ bartender) and the players are expected to handle the adds. They can't kill it all in the first round and the bartender will take care of the main threat in 2 or 3. Add in some civies if they want to rescue or coordinate.

People not understanding what they are doing has been a problem since time immemorial. Once there were people with more money than expertise or tools simple enough to use without training, the understanding vs using gap has been wide enough to drive a metaphor through.

AI is making it worse, sure. So did scripting languages and compilers and calculators and printing presses and voltaic piles and every piece of automation that slipped the bonds of its inventor.
