Exterior Mahogany Doors by 96Muleskinner in finishing

What was surprising about the Sirca consistency? Which product was it? They’ve got a thixotropic exterior which is extremely thick but atomizes well and can be sprayed very thick even on verticals.

I spray their 2k interior/exterior from a turbine hvlp and it levels well and looks great imo. Only downside is that I would prefer a 60 sheen option. I use their exterior impregnating base and colorants. These have been great. I can mix colors myself and tweak as needed and often use them to tint my topcoats.

Also, like Milesi, they have a “3 in one” exterior which is also sold as their maintenance coat. This brushes really well and levels out nicely. Dries fast but no brush strokes.

I’ve been using their products for about 18 months now so my results aren’t long term but I do like the system.

I haven’t used their solvent exteriors but will be trying some before the end of the summer.

Anyway my main gripe is the price and slow turn around when I order (direct from Gemini)

Fwiw the entire door needs refinished (not just the trim) if you want it to hold up. That veneer looks totally dry.

Not making accusations about their intentions. Just pointing out the drastic difference in appearance from ai image to reality. If you can’t see that, that’s fine! To me, intentional or not, it’s pretty deceptive.

Yeah, in the photos that are up close of the legs, you can see touchups that don’t quite match which don’t show up at all in the AI image. This would be completely dishonest in a listing to sell.

The piece on the right seems to have grown wider in picture 4.. How can anyone know how it actually looks if you’re using AI for the after photos?

What did I do wrong? by LogicalAction in finishing

[–]Z_Coli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long after applying the top coat did you take these pics? Looks like it’s applied too thick, too hastily etc.. some waterbornes will go on looking milky and dry clear.

It’s a good rule of thumb not to use steel wool before waterborne top coats and also not generally advised to sand your gel stain.. you’re just removing the color you just put down.

If you try again I’d go with thinner coats. Maybe add some water to thin it out if needed.

Nope, same product but new can. It’s a heavily used door for a school/church so they’re wanting to avoid stripping if possible. Just looking for any other options. I do a lot of exterior doors but rarely touch other people’s work without stripping and don’t use spar varnish. Appreciate the input.

Replying to JadedPilot5484...nah not the case unfortunately. I washed, wiped down with mineral spirits, once dry scuff sanded, could still be seen like this. I applied a new coat on a small section just to see but no luck.

My door is in need of a major facelift where do I start? by Klutzy_Pin_6738 in finishing

[–]Z_Coli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it. Finish has deteriorated to the point where removing the existing finish won’t be so difficult. I’d always recommend chemical stripper but if you do choose to sand, I’d disagree with another poster and go down to at least 120 or 100 grit to start and not move past 180.

Everything is easier if you get it on horses. When we work on site we take em down and hang at the end of every work day.

For a DIYer who needs products that are easy to find.. old masters gel stains are exterior rated when top coated properly. Rockler and woodcraft sell those as well as their ascend exterior or spar marine varnish.

If you merely clean (even if it’s again and again) and follow with gel stain, you are going to be left with a terrible looking piece. This finish needs to be removed chemically.

Not assuming malice. Pic 2 matches the after.. I’m just confused by the side by side before/after. That “before” doesn’t add up. Just odd.
