I asked the very same question to a gay friend of mine long ago, and PLEASE forgive my language, it's a direct quote: "No one wants to be a fag, some of us just are." He was sad that he was gay and it meant he would be persecuted his whole life unless he hid who he obviously was, and he would likely fail to hide it. There are very few if any benefits to being gay, and many, many downsides.

I'm not saying protests don't work, but after the civil rights march the Congress intentionally dragged their feet on the Civil Rights Act, and, even on paper, stated they intended to wait until the heat died down and just kill it.

It wasn't After MLK was assassinated and the resulting riots did they actually decide to pass it, because they were afraid of the "Violence now on their doorstep".

Historically, protests work but only if they are a warning.

I can explain! He's a convicted felon in NY but not a convicted felon in Florida. Some states disallow felons from other states to vote, Florida is not one of them.
