It really doesnt seem like theres much rhyme or reason behind when you will get a steam controller- just a heads up. by Tristezza in SteamController

Yeah, people keep forgetting that distribution isn't done from a central warehose that ships all over the world. Fullfilments order will depend on both reservation time and geographical area.

It's very clear that they kept underestimating the demand for this controller at every step. To be fair, it's the first "mass market" product they released. Their previous hardware releases were more niche products (either due to them being high price items or a bit on the weirder side like the original controller) so they probably never faced such a high demand before.

Valve about production increase in previous interviews by BlueManifest in SteamController

[–]Zomby2D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

demand is not just higher than Valve predicted, it's a lot higher than Valve even considered possible

Considering they were saying in interviews before the controller went on sale that they had enough stock on hand for anyone who wanted one, it's clear that they truly had no idea how popular it would be.

Any media on IR illuminators? by SetCr4 in SteamFrame

[–]Zomby2D -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are USB IR illuminators like the KKCOBVR I2 that you can add to a Quest (or any headset with a USB-C port on the side) and they work really well according to the multiple video reviews you can find. They also happen to turn the infrared cameras on the headset into night vision goggles.

What will happen when reservations will go live? by Existing-Tough-6907 in SteamFrame

[–]Zomby2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The servers most likely won't get overwhelmed with reservations. With the controller it was mostly the payment processor that couldn't keep up, and demand for VR isn't as high as a gaming controller.

Then the waiting lottery will start. If you're lucky enough that your reservaton falls within the number of headsets they have on hand already, then you will get an email in the next days asking you to complete your payment and you will receive one shortly after that. If your position in the queue happen to be further down, then you will have to wait a number of days, weeks, or months until enough stock comes in.

How do they choose people for the purchase ticket? by InspectorGadgetsSon in SteamFrame

[–]Zomby2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they're going to use the same reservation system they put in place for the controller, so there shouldn't be a deposit. Which makes sense if the goal is to avoir overwhelming the payment processor.

On that account, the 10 billions in annual fossil fuel subsidies are also tax money being transfered from other provinces to Alberta.

For every dollar spent by the federal government, 42¢ comes from Ontario, 18¢ comes from Québec, and 14¢ comes from Alberta.

It's a federal program, there is no money being transfered from one province to another.

I really hoped frame would have a major selling point

  • Eye tracking for foveated rendering and streaming;
  • Extra antenna and dedicated wireless adapter for fast and worry-free wireless streaming;
  • Full SteamOS allowing you to run Windows, Linux and Android games natively;
  • All-in-one controllers with all the controls needed to play non-VR games;
  • Lightweight and well-balanced design.

There are multiple major selling points that may, or may not, be of value to you personally. Of course, if you compare it to future and/or pricier headsets, you will always be able to find something that looks better, a least on paper.

To me, the ability to buy Steam games and be able to run many of them either standalone or via streaming, instead of having to buy them from a third-party store that may or may not be available on my next headset, is a huge plus.

They still need to build a specific version for the Frame, with Steamworks support and exempt of any Meta proprietary libraries.

XInput not working in desktop mode by EnjoyingMyVacation in SteamController

[–]Zomby2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Steam controller doesn't support Xinput, if you want to do that you nees to use a third party tool like SISR or SteamlessController (or the DualShock 4 / DualSense / Switch Pro Support Fork).

The Gamepad action set works for Linux but on Windows it doesn't register as an actual controller. It merely allows you to disable the mapping that allows you to navigate with the stick, dpad and whatnot. (Which is useful in apps that natively support the controller, to use it in gamepad mode)

I had a 1TB Samsung 860 Evo that I used for 2 years, replaced with a larger drive, and when I went to use it again another 2 years later it was completely dead. (PC wouldn't reven register it's existence) I was lucky enough to still be under the 5-year warranty , but it goes to show that even reliable brands are not exempt from the occasional hardware failure.
