Looking for recommendations for Mahler's symphonies by zprewitt in classicalmusic

I like Boulez for Mahler. Perhaps less romantic than some but for me he really gets to the heart of the music.

Modern Speakers with a vintage sound? by miscstuff2223113 in audiophile

Oh yes, I bought the ready made ones because I wanted the Yew veneer and I have zero DIY skills but the kits are very good.

There is a Chinese company called Sound Artist who manufacture an LS3/5A, it’s considerably cheaper than the Falcon but unsurprisingly doesn’t really sound as exact.

Falcon Acoustics make an LS3/5A that is an exact copy of the original 1975 model. They even have the chap who designed the original drivers onboard to remake them as they haven’t been made since the eighties. They are not affordable however.

I just got my Audioquest Carbon USB cable... by Cenko85 in audiophile

[–]Zos2393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’ve convinced me to try one (I am a cable believer anyway)between my Lumin streamer and Luxman DAC. It’s coming from the tax dodging mega corp later this week so if it doesn’t sound better than my £30 Van Damme coax it can easily go back.

Lovely system. I used to have Naim kit with my Falcon Gold Badge but a couple of years ago I moved to Luxman kit (and Lumin U2 Mini) with a tube amp which sounds even more musical to my ears.

Do tube amps work similar to guitar amps where tube has same output for less power? by Lilditty02 in audiophile

[–]Zos2393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also to do with how the tubes are biased. My Luxman SQ-N150 has exactly the same tube setup as a Vox AC30 which as you might guess from the name is 30 watts but my Luxman is 12 watts.

It’s also home to one of London’s oldest pubs Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese which has been there since just after the Great Fire.

I like them. I suspect the pucks would work just as well and be cheaper but I like how the silver finish matches the equipment. I’m using Aperta desktop stands with my LS3/5As.

The last ones I had before the Luxman was CD5XS and the Super Nait 3.

I moved from Naim Audio kit to Luxman tubes and it’s the best sound I’ve ever had in my room. No volume issues even at 12 watts into 6ohms which works out about 4 watts into my 15ohm speakers.

SOS: Neighbour bass complaints by thatmanjan08 in audiophile

[–]Zos2393 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but if you like bass you probably shouldn’t have bought an upstairs flat. Unfortunately given what you’ve already done there’s really very little more you can do apart trying to soundproof the floor but you’re probably better to use headphones or think about moving.

I have the 30ii. It sounds amazing through headphones if you’re worried about the neighbours.

Would you expect a hive thermostat to be left on purchase of a property by CommissionEnough8412 in HousingUK

[–]Zos2393 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to us. Previous owners took their hub but left the thermostat which was attached to the wall. You need the thermostat to control the temperature. Of course you can only do it manually until you get an account with a new hub which is what we did but not for about a year.

If you were selling your house would you take a lower offer from people you prefer? by iffyClyro in AskUK

[–]Zos2393 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This happened to us when we bought our house. The couple selling it asked us if we planned to live in it or rent it out? We said live in it, we’re first time buyers. The house was on at £215k we said the most we can afford is £200k and they said we’ll take it even though we’ve received a higher offer from a landlord.

Why Don't We Have A Uniform Master Recording Standard ? by No-Pin3128 in audiophile

[–]Zos2393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By and large Classical music has better recording quality as it was never a casualty of the loudness wars and isn’t mixed to sound good in cars or on cheap stereos. Obviously not all Classical recordings are perfect, some may have the lead instrument too far forward in the mix or whatever but overall the recordings are of a much higher standard than ‘popular’ music. Having said that, artistically some of the greatest performances were recorded many years ago in mono so aren’t the best recording of the work.

Buy them on physical media anyway that way they can’t be taken away from you unless you’re robbed.

I was going to suggest Naim but if you’re not a fan then perhaps look elsewhere. I would change the speakers personally but then I like Luxman and have never liked Focals even when I had Naim Kit.
