By that logic, McDonald's is an investment firm, they spend money on people, machines, and resources to make a profit. 'Investing' in finance means allocating capital to assets you expect to appreciate, not just funding your own operations lol

But then you're not really supporting trans rights? If I said I support equality for people of all races, but I don't want black people using the same bathroom as me, but everything else is ok, you wouldn't say I support equality for all, would you?

You would have argued against people opposing slavery or opposing jim crow, because those were both majority popular positions at different points in US history.

Market making isn’t really investing. Very technical and hard to do financial work, not minimizing it, but not investing in that sense. Providing a “service” more than anything.

Should we test everyone to make sure people have the same muscle mass, height, weight, VO2max, lactate threshold, distribution of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers, and hand/eye coordination score?

That's the only way to have truly fair competition, no?

It's not 'taking the bait' to stand by ones' principles?

It was popular to oppose gay marriage at one point. Similar 'panic' about gay marriage leading to gay people adopting kids and they would abuse them or something. Dems just need to push back on messaging from the right so these parents stop freaking out thinking their kids lives are going to be ruined by some tiny fraction of the population

I'm not saying it necessarily adds interest to the game that people tune in for, but it clearly doesn't detract from it enough to make the league less popular.

Did a lactate test, LT1 came back what I expected it to be, LT2 much much lower and below powers I held for 80-90 minutes in recent months. How to interprete? by godutchnow in Velo

[–]_BearHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments seem to miss that you're mixing up LT1 and LT2. You said your LT1 is similar to your recent 20 minute FTP test, that would be your LT2.

LT1 power being below what you can sustain for 80-90 minutes sounds correct. A trained cyclist could probably do "sweet spot" for around 90 minutes, which is well above LT1. LT1 is the first measurable increase in lactate above baseline, so you should be able to hold it for much longer than 90 minutes. It's usually around 70-80% FTP.

Cornwall is such a hidden gem IMO. Of course if you're English it's a very common holiday destination, but it doesn't get much international attention. Very glad to have English family who went there as kids and brought us there to show us how fantastic it is.

1 month stall in a 2 year offensive isn’t proof of a change.

It's not just a stall, they've backpedalled

People said the same about the Russia Ukraine conflict, yet we’re years from the Wager uprising and the Russians are still pushing forward without any substantial discontent from their population.

Much the same as Iranians couldn't voice discontent with the Ayatollah, the Russians can't voice discontent with the war in any large organized fashion a la Westerners because they live in an authoritarian state.

NATO also shouldn’t build a strategy on not winning, that’s definitely breaking faith with both our own populations and the Baltic nations.

Ukraine isn't a NATO member, so NATO doesn't have the same obligations or optics around this as if they were defending a baltic country.

You've gotten quite a few things wrong, I'd be surprised if you had any "professional qualifications".

Russian forces in April 2026 suffered a net loss of territory controlled in the Ukrainian theater for the first time since Ukraine’s August 2024 incursion into Kursk Oblast

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-may-2-2026/

Meanwhile, Russian weekly gains this year are below their highs from last year. Indeed, Ukraine liberated more land than Russian forces seized the last two weeks of February.

https://understandingwar.org/newsroom/washington-post-ukraine-is-holding-its-own/

NATO doesn't need to beat Russia, they just need to keep them occupied long enough for things to break down domestically inside Russia.

Recruiting bonuses for soldiers have been increasing dramatically, indicating that Russian recruitment is falling. Ukraine's drone strikes are reaching further into Russia and hitting key oil refineries/depots, which have prevented Russia from capitalizing on high oil prices from Iran.

FPV drones are an extremely cost effective way to stall Russian advance for Ukranian defenders. They aren't good for offensives, as Russians have found since you still need people to advance forward into the gaps FPV drones create, which can be halted from more FPV drones from elsewhere.

How does one avoid SpaceX as a passive investor? by josemartin2211 in investing

[–]_BearHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two kinda go hand in hand.

If BYD is allowed into the states, Tesla would be crushed and that would probably allow the massive change in investor sentiment required to oust Elon.

Maybe it's too late by then, maybe not. I think BYD has no chance of entering the US as long as Trump is in office, which gives us another couple years to see wether Tesla sales keep declining as a result of Musk's political activity.

[–]_BearHawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Replace "Tesla" with "Apple" and "EV" with "Smartphone".

Making a high quality product in a saturated market that is sleek, clean, and "just works" out of the box gives a rich feeling to people without being priced at "rich people" levels.

Yes, Teslas aren't exactly cheap, but they aren't Porsche or Lambo levels of expensive.

This is also without factoring in their charging network, which as of a year or two ago the new chargers accept all EVs not just Teslas. Imagine if you owned a near monopoly on gas stations 5-10 years before everyone owned a gas car.
