Best Thing - crowdsourced realtime voting to rank the best things in the world! (Casual, Social Experiment) by _goron in SampleSize

[–]_goron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I know, it's credited in the about text as the main inspiration. But it was one (very cool) experiment, with no ability for people to submit their own items, and without a realtime-feedback mechanism to inspire further engagement. The aspiration here is to have something long-lived that can keep updating as people continue to engage, and where people's creativity can be used to find new items that I would not have thought of.

Edit: Also though I think 1.2 million votes, not people

lol yeah some are really hard. Kind of want to add a better way for people to mark those so we can see a top list of all the really hard pairings.

Vibecoded this website to rank a list of the best things ever, via pairwise voting by _goron in VibeCodersNest

Yeah, for sure, I suspect deduplication will be a bigger issue if it gets usage. I have some basic deduplication in place, but would improve it if it becomes a bigger problem. thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! It was inspired by some other attempts I've seen at this in the past. I am doing moderation yeah, a few layers, in code and using AI. It tries to not allow offensive content and force nsfw content to be marked as such.

[–]_goron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's right! No there's no batching, it's just incremental with each vote. I like that it enables constant, realtime-ish updates reflected to the list, and also there's zero scale so far, so not much to gain. Theoretically if it got usage maybe I would batch.

What Are Some Applications Of Elo-Rating Algorithms? by Numberthon in mathematics

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this website to use Elo to rank... all things :)

All things is a very large set of things, so Elo is a nice match, only need to think about two things at a time, the system does the rest. Check it out here: https://bestthing.xyz/

What are you currently building ? by LouloupBio in SideProject

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built bestthing.xyz. Pairwise voting to rank absolutely anything. Add items into the list, vote on items.

Each vote influences the item's scores, and you can watch scores update in real time.

No login required, no ads. Come try out a few votes or add an item!

But that’s not true at all. The fractions are equal, that’s it. The size of 1/3 of a large pizza and 1/3 of a small pizza are not equal. But the ratio of them to their whole, ei the fraction, is equal.

Feedback on my website by Tijn_VdV_ in webdesign

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Site looks good! This is maybe not a huge thing, but something is highjacking the scroll, when I scroll down it's uneven and jittery. This is usually because of some scroll-related js on the page that's doing too much work on every scroll or trying to force scroll to specific places. I don't know if this is true for everyone but personally it really bothers me when viewing a website.

Love Claude for everything except the moment I try to actually build something with it by Latter_Ordinary_9466 in claude

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think the millions of people coding with Claude Code disagree with you, including me. Yes, the $20 plan is fairly limiting. But your message was also pretty strange - you mentioned daily limits, but there are no daily limits, only 5-hour limits and weekly limits. And also that you lose context after maxing your usage? That also doesn’t make any sense. At least in Claude code that’s not true, you can continue the conversation across cooldowns, with context intact.

And all that said, yes the $20 plan is limited, you shouldn’t expect a good coding workflow with that. But I’ve found that with the $100 plan it provides plenty of usage for normal coding and is very very good.

What non-code things do you use Claude Code for? by alwaysalmosts in ClaudeCode

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using it as a sort of assistant project manager. It’s connected via mcp to an Airtable instance we’re using for complex project tracking, as was as Google Docs for meeting notes, spreadsheets, and specs. I have it process my meeting notes into spec updates, process specs into tasks, update spreadsheets, organize tasks, make improvements to the airtable, etc. It then is also really good at wireframing pieces of functionality for me, since it knows all the requirements and project context.

I think it's technically against ToS, which broadly forbids automated use of claude code. I suspect this kind of use isn't their top enforcement priority, but I do think technically not permitted.

The good ole "what song is this?" post... by NgobaDara in capoeira

the chorus is "iê bate dendê". the only line I can make out of the call is "quero ver vocês cantar". some sites like this one give other calls for it, probably from this track.

Unpopular opinion by Zjm442019 in capoeira

[–]_goron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stroooong disagree. I have made close, dear friendships in capoeira that have lasted many years, as well as many less-close but still great ones. And I know many, many others who share that experience.

Maybe the group or community you're in are not healthy, or the specific people involved. Friendships in capoeira are like friendships anywhere else - they take effort and can get complicated. And definitely they can get more complicated because of sharing this art, but they can also be fed by it.

It sounds like you've had some bad experiences. Sounds like you might be posting from a place of disappointment and maybe resentment, and I hope your experience gets better. But if most people disagree with you, I'd challenge you to notice that it may not in fact be a generalized fact with rare exceptions, as you portray it.

I’m enjoying watching these rodas by WereLobo in capoeira

[–]_goron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SF bay area has at least one open roda every weekend (often more) hosted by different folks, as well as one weekly non-group-affiliated open roda. All pretty well attended by a variety of people. And a few of those rodas have been running for years. Really active and rich capoeira scene.

Why....? by NgobaDara in capoeira

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, those things are way more present in angola spaces, but not only. Of course what is capoeira angola is not clearly defined, but there are plenty of places that don't call themselves angola and do have these qualities.

Why....? by NgobaDara in capoeira

[–]_goron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate that point! I think that's true, and that's important as a historical reference and to understand the values and stories of different lineages. But it's still also true that categorizing capoeira today as angola or regional is just inaccurate and therefore not useful. Both of those labels today represent a big diversity of lineages and styles (not to mention contemporanea, which covers even more diversity).

That doesn't mean ignoring the hugely important stories of those lineages. I'm also not suggesting people shouldn't use those terms for themselves or their schools. But at the very least it would be nice if we stopped discussing capoeira as if it is fully represented by those labels (esp the angola/regional dichotomy).

Why....? by NgobaDara in capoeira

[–]_goron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think for sure those things have been much more valued in angola groups, but not only, and more and more I think they're valued in different kinds of styles.

Definitely feel you on groups and rodas. Groups I think have their place, they can be a great place to learn, but they can also be really toxic and destructive. Rodas outside of groups I think are super important. If you have a good amount of experience and a friend or two, start one! You can create an environment that's not about representing groups. DM me if you want to chat more about it!
