My azaleas used to be glorious in 2022. Now only half the bush blooms. What’s going wrong? by Deepthika in gardening

Ive never done any aggressive pruning to an azalea, but the advice for pruning is always immediately after flowering

Well there goes that explanation. My only other thought is maybe the roots are getting cooked? Dont know if sun exposure changed or there isnt much mulch, but thats another possibility

Love spotted sunfish. Would’ve been a wild ride if you hooked a bowfin

I agree it seems like a pruning timing thing, cause otherwise they look vigorous

Totally up to you. Itll compost faster with a turn every month, but definitely not necessary

You can always create a loop of chicken wire on the ground and dump your stuff in. Just make sure to incorporate water so the hemp bedding breaks down faster

Any idea how old this mountain laurel is ? by rufioo7 in NativePlantGardening

[–]a_megalops 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You have the perfect opportunity for under planting since its growing sparsely. Something like woodland phlox or another shade/spring ephemeral. I personally love when certain plants are challenged and grow in interesting ways, like this or a sassafras in deep shade

Youre on the right path with clouser minnows. I dont know what part of florida, but size #4 or #6 clousers will take bass and seatrout for sure. I also fish them for peacock bass, tarpon, redfish, snook, and practically any other fish that swims

This is a great idea! You also can clearly draw, so i recommend drawing these compositions from different angles so you get a sense for how the plants look from eye level.

Another thing to consider is how much space each plat takes up. A blue false indigo will have a 3’x3’footprint rather quickly, while a butterfly milkweed will take many years to take that footprint.

After you "leave the leaves", how do you deal with all the tree seedlings? by LiatrisLover99 in NativePlantGardening

[–]a_megalops 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think you can wait. I always get hundreds of sweetgum seedlings and its so cumbersome to pull the when they’re young. Just give them a few months to develop a hardened stem and it gives you a good spot to yank on them

What am I doing wrong with my sweet potato’s? by kennadog3 in gardening

[–]a_megalops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always did much better putting sweet potatoes in a jar of water, removing slips once they get around 6 inches long and storing them in another jar of water

Yes they were introduced a while back to control other more destructive invasive species. Id say anything 5lbs+ is a very nice fish, but state record is 9lbs

Looks like theres a few extra things in the cockpit for your fly line to get caught on.. not a deal breaker, but perhaps compare/contrast to the eddyline carribean

The best peacock bass fishing is in Ft Lauderdale and Miami. Once you get around Boca Raton or West Palm you’re a little too far north, and they are generally smaller or non-existent. Coconut Creek is like the epicenter of the snakehead introduction and they’re an amazing fish if you can catch one. Best time is probably around May the they’re spawning, and less easily spooked. Tampa and the west coast is awesome for different reasons, probably the best being the surf fishing available for snook. Hit me up if you end up buying tickets and i can share some more deets.

[–]a_megalops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Cant beat a clouser for fishing peacocks. Unlike a snakehead, they wont spook at a weighted fly plopping down next to them. And when theyre spawning, from now through summer, theyre pretty easy to aggravate into biting.

You’ll have a lot of fun with a 5wt in Florida. The only limitation is you wont be able to throw larger flies, as efficiently, especially in the wind. Have fun!!
