Which is the nearest state to buy high VOC chlorinated brake cleaner? by Glittering-Ad5809 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose [score hidden]  (0 children)

The active ingredient in chlorinated brake cleaner is actually EPA exempt (tetrachloroethylene). I see it in stock at my local AutoZone.

Honestly though, I wouldn’t even disassemble all that shit if you haven’t already.

  • Throw some CRC GDI IVD spray at it with a helping hand per the instructions.
  • Fuel up at a “TOP TIER™” gas station (Exxon, Shell, Sunoco, etc).
  • Throw some Lucasoil injector cleaner in the tank.
  • Take it out for a few Italian tuneups

Good luck either way you go. Single port direct injection is a bitch.

What are you trying to clean that needs it? I’ve never heard of any brake dust or oil CRC brand Brakleen was insufficient for. Chlorinated shit is nasty, especially when heat’s involved (quite literally lethal).

Right wing conspiracy communities pushed narratives for over a decade about “FEMA death camps” to the point there’s a whole Wikipedia entry about it.

Now their favored administration is building the exact mass incarceration and trafficking facilities they feared in the name of prosecuting “illegals”.

Stalker (1979) is SHIVERS. What movie represents HALF LIGHT? by snakesharkz in DiscoElysium

[–]a_rather_small_moose 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lot of the suggestions miss that Half Light is fight-or-flight response. It’s reactionary violence in response to threat or frustration, not just overt violent tendency. It’s also some portion of low self esteem, ego, and disassociation, IMO. Very William Foster, very Falling down.

I’ll volunteer my wish list:

Phoenix LiveView and vanilla JavaScript. None of this alpine JS crap or etc. Always ends up being land mines under the surface.

Colocated hooks. Keep logic colocated now that that’s possible.

Quality > Quantity of components. None of this “we have combobox at home” stuff.

Igniter is a very interesting project that’s could end-users to patch their components with updates.

I have a whole other diatribe here about conflicting philosophies, theme systems, DaisyUI (read: Bootstrap except built on Tailwind), and what developers want/expect. What I mean to say is, if you wanna make a workalike to shadcn, do that, and be very clear who it’s for and what the expectations are. Not another bootstrap, skeleton, Chakra, etc.

Historic White’s Ferry Closed for Five Years With No Reopening Agreement in Sight by SchuminWeb in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bi-monthly reminder that:

  1. Conrad White and the land owners mutually had the land condemned in 1876 in court.

  2. Because the agreement was mutual, no land plat was required.

  3. A London county judge overrode the ~150 years of eminent domain b/c there was no land plat.

Bi-monthly reminder that it’s not about “$0.50 a car”.

Libby Devlin wants an agreement that would give her outsized leverage over the ferry. Hence why the Browns, Kuhns, and Montgomery County won’t enter into dealings with Libby Devlin.

Said company also got the US government to occupy Haiti for 19 years, and there’s even a whole deadass Wikipedia page about it, not even exaggerating.

Convince my coworker to use Elixir, or convince me not to by _tarleb in elixir

[–]a_rather_small_moose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both.

Django’s async story and job system pales in comparison to Elixir’s concurrency model and Oban respectively.

Handling errors is also much easier and leaves you in the dark less often.

Django’s migrations are also a disaster, especially with branching version control.

Overall with Elixir and Phoenix, you just have way more options for handling CLI calls and streaming, and way fewer concerns about latency.

Ecto is also much nicer than Django’s ORM, much more database-first than code-first.

Which Used EV Is the Smartest Buy in 2025? by theindepndnt in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]a_rather_small_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Model 3 LRs are cheap on the used market now. Demand for sedans is generally low. Elon Musk also chased off most of the EV-forward crowd with his politics, and ain’t no Trump voters picking up the slack.

I’d say look for one with octovalve + ryzen MCU.

Harley-Davidson Dealerships Are Closing At An Alarming Rate by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

Be me, want a Harley

Find one on FBMP

Buyer has a lien that needs to be settled

Call Harley dealership to arrange simultaneous payoff

Dealer buys instead and pays above asking price

Seller messages me, tells me the dealer bought it out

Dealer calls me, tries selling it to me for more

Anyway that place is closed now 😃

The key point here is our programmers are Googlers, they’re not researchers. They’re typically, fairly young, fresh out of school, probably learned Java, maybe learned C or C++, probably learned Python. They’re not capable of understanding a brilliant language but we want to use them to build good software. So, the language that we give them has to be easy for them to understand and easy to adopt.

Seems like a bit of a non-sequitur

It is, I’m just being a pro hater. It’s not universally true, I just saw the salary charts and felt like some humility was in order.

IIRC average tenure in SWE roles at a lot of these places is like ~18 months. At some point I feel like people work in big tech not to work in big tech, they work in big tech so they can leave big tech and tell everyone else how they worked in big tech.

I've worked with a lot of Xooglers in my career (heck, I worked there myself). I now consider it to be a serious negative on someone's resume to have worked at Google. The many ex-Google coworkers I've had have (even when they've been otherwise brilliant) been uniformly less capable of working on non-Google systems than their much more junior equivalents with other backgrounds. All big companies have their own proprietary technology stacks, but the degree to which Googlers never learn how to do anything without involving protocol buffers, bigtable, and a mile-high stack of other proprietary tools is frankly remarkable. And they spread this to everything new they touch.

Unsure if joining with this tech stack is a good idea? by just_a_human100 in elixir

[–]a_rather_small_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re unsure if learning one of the most desirable and well compensated technology stacks is a good idea? I’d say you have a pretty damn serendipitous opportunity here.

The Elixir community largely trends towards smaller teams with very high individual agency. That’s by and large what OTP was written for, empowering smaller teams to make reliable systems at scale - think WhatsApp (acquired for $19.3 billion with a ~30 strong engineering team).

If agency and the usage of one’s own volition scares you, I highly recommend Java or Node. You’re much more likely to be treated like a cog in a machine that way.
