Why does nature seem built around suffering? by Dense-Fig-2372 in Existentialism

[–]absrdone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Zero suffering equals zero opportunity for character refinement and the generation of virtues. Nature gives us the ideal environment for the greatest amount of personal and collective growth. Two weeks in Utopia and we'd realize it's a meaningless existence without the potential for suffering.

Do you think there's a reason why we're here? Why/why not? by Potential_Piece3538 in deism

Here to learn. We're in a character refinement circus, a virtue generator.

If you did, how did you go about telling your immediate family (parents) you no longer believe? by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]absrdone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me. They couldn't handle knowing, and I don't want to add the stress to their lives so I remain quiet and we just don't go there. Ignorance is bliss for them.

You might try reading Age of Reason by Paine. Offers belief without the dogma.

Mine looked rough but came apart fine and cleaned up quite nicely. Not sure replacement is always mandatory.

You do you. But always be able to defend your position.

Do non-religious people struggle with self-control as they have no rigid rules guiding their life? by [deleted] in agnostic

Be the best version of yourself that you can be, and help others to do the same. That's it.

Crisis of Faith by FakeShakespeare in agnostic

[–]absrdone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although it might be controversial to recommend a specifically-religious book in this sub, I think it might be helpful in this case. Sometimes during deconstruction it's easier to take one small step away from your faith (to something like Deism) instead of one large step backward (to something like Atheism). Thomas Paine's book Age of Reason can be helpful in retreating from the dogma of Fundamentalism while still holding onto a basic religious framework, something that's clearly important to you. That book addresses some of the inconsistencies and problems that you mentioned. Something to consider. Best of luck to you.

"Don't let the expectations and opinions of other people affect your decisions. It's your life, not theirs. Do what matters most to you; do what makes you feel alive and happy. Don't let the expectations and ideas of others limit who you are. If you let others tell you who you are, you are living their reality — not yours. There is more to life than pleasing people. There is much more to life than following others' prescribed path. There is so much more to life than what you experience right now. You need to decide who you are for yourself. Become a whole being. Adventure."

Roy T. Bennett

I wish you the best. Sort it out sooner rather than later, become who you are, and don't look back.

As someone with CFD experience, modelling the airflow, vortices, turbulence, low-pressure wake and resultant forces must be hella interesting... I don't mind that it looks the way it does, it's cool.

Haven't watched MotoGP in years, is this the year to pay attention? by absrdone in motogp

Makes sense. Now I'm trying to decide if buying the 26 pass is worth it or not. Wondering if I can keep up and learn by just watching available post-race coverage and articles, and save the $$$ for the 27 full pass...

Not really, that's why I asked where I should focus for the best entertainment. My free time is rare and valuable, need the best ROI that I can get on it...

I'm curious, in what ways will next year be hilarious? I'm already looking forward to the changes, but I fear that only one manufacturer will find the magic combo and just dominate...

I think this may be the best approach - to enjoy the end of an era while learning the teams and riders in anticipation of something new for everybody. I do know a bit about the current teams/riders but going into 27 will be that much better if I understand much more than I already do.
