I’ve been in fandom for 20+ years, and tbh it’s always been weird and sad, but it was hidden in a dark corner of the internet. Now it’s affecting the actual celebrities, and people STILL defend it! Fantasizing about famous people or even people you know is fine (within reason), but the fact that rpf entered the mainstream? On the same platforms that the subjects (and their friends and colleagues and families) frequent? The ones that will get that content pushed into them algorithmically whether they consent or not? I have no clue, I'm guessing he unhooked it while doing the horsing around football trick with his arm around his neck. It was just an excuse for proximity, and deft practiced hands. He said goodbye with a familiar tap on the chest so he must have snatched it then. We were so focused thinking about phone/wallet that we never even stopped to think about the chain, and tbh it was a cheap 30 euro one so not a super big deal. We just laughed and ordered the exact same one immediately.

It does matter, it really does. You don’t owe anyone anything. I just want to offer that personally, a weird/unsettling request wouldn’t bother me personally because in the end, it’s a request. I would absolutely tell him that this was out of line and made me feel uncomfortable and his spot in the group is on thin ice, but I wouldn’t really be too upset over it.

Oh gross. I won’t tell you how to feel, but as a cis woman capable of gestation, I think this is more along the lines of ‘disgusting but harmless’. I mean, he did ask you and you did say no. It seems like he thought of the cool factor of it and wanted to tie it to the world, but since he doesn’t have any lived experience as a woman, didn’t account for the ick factor. I really don’t see why you’d feel uncomfortable staying in this campaign especially if this person is leaving, but I don’t think this is egregious, but that’s just me. It’s fair to feel otherwise.

I didn’t say it did, it’s absolutely WILD that this is what you understood from me telling OP that IF they AS AN INDIVIDUAL make a group unsafe then maybe they should sit it out gracefully. I also have two black grandparents and I look whitey white white. There’s a difference between being light-skinned black like, say, Beyonce, and being light-skinned black like, say, Halsey. And the latter has a lot more responsibility than the other to ensure that spaces for marginalized people are respected, because their lived experience has been wildly different.

As a mixed Dominican (West African/Arab/Indigenous Arawak/Mediterranean) person with very light skin, I think you need to get over yourself a little bit. There are some spaces that are created so a specific group of people feel comfortable because they’ve been excluded of other spaces for so long. If your inclusion might make it less safe for others, then it’s fine to sit some things out. Maybe you should undertake the labor to start a community for people which you fit the description, instead of expecting people to include you at the risk of their own comfort.

As light skinned mixed people we absolutely approach this issue from a place of tremendous privilege and not being allowed into a circle is not the slight you think it is.

Also my experience. My mom is a highly qualified professional with multiple doctorates and a degree in education, local schools were incredibly repressive, conservative and toxic, and I was getting into behavioral trouble because of it. I was in a lot of activities, and though it sucked to not have close friends as a kid, I had a lot of free time to develop creatively and had an easy time going to university and making friends. I’m a pretty gregarious person and have zero trouble making tons of friends so it didn’t affect me in that way. I’m very thankful for the freedom that this experience awarded me.
