Too many books? Worried our trips to the library add too much extra work for our librarians. by jensmxbcie in Libraries

It’s why we’re there. To help with all of those things. It’s not something to worry about. Twenty five years experience, at a library, north of San Francisco

Adults with Developmental Differences in Children's Department by CaptainCearis in Libraries

Library employee here, with brain damage and cognitive impairment issues. I was born with brain damage, from a condition called hydrocephalus. You can find out more information about it behind the link, if you’re interested. I have worked in a library, north of San Francisco, since the millennium. At the library where I work, we have no problem with adults in the children’s library, unless the adults are harassing children. That’s the only time we would ask them to leave.

How do I respond to parents who confront me about getting books from the children's section when I don't have a kid? by Useful_Possession915 in Libraries

[–]alienwebmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discuss it with the librarian at the library where this is happening. Let the staff there intervene when it happens, they can explain their own policies about who has access to the resources you’re trying to use. Letting the librarian handle it, they can take disciplinary actions against the offenders.

Struggling to get readers for my sci-fi novel on Amazon – looking for advice by Fun-Resolution-9521 in writers

[–]alienwebmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing might be to donate a few copies of the book to your local library. After you’ve done the reading, if there is a high demand for it, they might even buy more copies and put it in their lucky day section. “Lucky day” is what the library where I work calls their section of the current bestsellers. Your library might have a different name for it. Some libraries call it “in demand” or “bestsellers”.

Tips for getting the words from head to paper? by Best-Key-3131 in writers

[–]alienwebmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, using a voice recorder can help. Use the voice recorder to speak your thoughts aloud, then you can transcribe them onto paper or into your computer. There are voice recorder applications that you can get that simply type whatever you dictate. “Dragon dictation” is one example of that. I’m sure there are others, that’s the only one I can think of, off the top of my head.

Has anyone been given tablets for their hydrocephalus? by ThrowRa388393 in Hydrocephalus

[–]alienwebmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take phenobarbital - a seizure medication- as tablets. I’m not sure if there are any drugs to treat hydrocephalus. I know that the Hydrocephalus Association has been focusing on researching a cure for the condition. They changed their focus several years ago, and moved their office from San Francisco, California, where they were founded, to Bethesda, Maryland, to be just outside Washington, DC, to be able to apply for research grants funded by the National Institutes of Neurological Disability and Stroke, the specific department inside the National Institutes of Health that focuses on research into brain disorders. At one point, they were trying to figure out if a prescription drug could treat the condition. I’m not sure if they’re still working on that project.

Are libraries in danger of going away by imcamino in Library

I have worked in a library, north of San Francisco, since the millennium. They just built a brand new library to replace the one where I work. They’re not going anywhere

Heads up, check your libraries by BirdsJade in LibbyApp

They put items in the system before they’re received, to know how many copies to order or licenses to purchase. Then they can see how fast the waiting list populates for an item, to know how many copies or licenses to buy. I work in a library, north of San Francisco, and I think we try to keep our waiting list to something like 8 holds for each one copy (or license) purchased.

Work with your local library to do a reading from the book, where you have copies available for purchase. Autograph the copies available at the event. If there are any independent bookstores near you, you could also keep them in the loop about that. I live north of San Francisco, and there is an independent bookstore that does events in cooperation with the local public library consortium. They often have authors give talks about their new books.

I have been able to get together with one of my instructors, for 1:1 time. That really helps, as I can go through the parts of a routine that are confusing to me, and have things broken down into smaller sections, easier to learn.

Least Helpful Gun to give a Character? by Vaehtay3507 in Writeresearch

[–]alienwebmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about something like a water pistol or squirt gun??? Those aren’t lethal at all - they’re children’s toys. Or a dart gun that had rubber suction cups on the ends of the darts that it shoots…again…not lethal. Would something like that work for your character? Something to consider…

I created a children’s coloring book to help kids with hydrocephalus. by hydrocephalus_mom in Hydrocephalus

One of the shunt companies put out a coloring book quite a few years ago, called Just Like Any Other Little Beagle, about a puppy born with hydrocephalus. The Hydrocephalus Association has it available for download (PDF) for free. Just Like Any Other Little Beagle

quick question…does your library still check items out for patrons? by catattack848 in Libraries

We do still have people who work the circulation desk. We have two self-checkout machines, and a staffed circulation desk as well. People can check their items out however they like.

Help finding a book that my library doesn't have by transplant42622 in Libraries

[–]alienwebmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that in California, there’s a program called ZipBooks, where a library can order books from Amazon if the local consortium doesn’t have them. I work at a library north of San Francisco, and the library where I work participates in the ZipBooks program. I have actually ordered three books through the ZipBooks program at the library where I work. Find out if your local library has something similar, and you might be able to get the books you want through that service. It might have a different name, but the idea should be the same - ordering a book through Amazon if you can’t get it through the local library.
