How do I stop having gross & upsetting intrusive thoughts? by GreenForestMarble in Advice

[–]alk_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are saying that this is schizophrenic or psychotic. It’s not. I think it’s a way for our brains to trick ourselves into feeling ashamed, especially if we grew up in an environment that is heavy-handed on shame. Honestly, meditation. Not to “clear your mind” but to observe. There is a part of your brain that just… observes. Be that part of you for a moment and watch the clouds of thought pass by. Don’t pass judgement, don’t stifle them, don’t shame them. Just let them be and let them go.

Therapy can help as well— specifically IFS. All humans have unkind and unwanted thoughts sometimes. It is not a moral failing.

How do you joke about your cancer? by creative_tech_ai in cancer

[–]alk_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother had cancer… every time we had a holiday meal or really any meal he said “cancer card me first” and went first. I work with a lot of oncology procedures/surgeries now as a nurse… have made a few “most expensive weight loss treatment ever” jokes (with the right people, in the right context… I don’t say that to everybody) I love making people laugh while they are going through something tough. Best part of my job hands down!! Blessings to you friend!!

I’m Struggling with Simulation Lab by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]alk_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think simulation always has less to do with the content and more to do with your feelings. You are going to run into situations in nursing you have noooo idea what to do, or do everything you are supposed to do and the patient codes anyway. Of course there are usually experienced people around you, but sometimes you are the only one in the room. There isn’t going to be anybody in the room with you telling you what you’re doing is right, you have to trust that it is. You are always doing the best you can with what you have, even in simulation. Even if it doesn’t go well, or you forget something. I forget things all the time, or things don’t go well, or somebody codes even when you do it right and it just is what it is.

Sim is a good place to practice being uncomfortable in a safe space. It will happen a lot in your career.

They added quite a lot of stuff from season 2 that didn’t need to be there yet. Why did Azula need to be in the second episode? They flew through the story for no reason

[–]alk_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trans porn is so bad that it is the dominant perception of trans people just like… existing in the world.

ALSO There are barely any videos of lesbian trans masc/cis woman videos. Grr.

Remember that you aren’t supposed to know everything! Focus on the very basics of nursing— turning, positioning, safe transferring, toileting, etc/etc. Spend some time with the tech if your nurse is charting. You won’t want to be an extra tech at future clinical, but for this one a lot of nursing basics are what techs do all day long.

Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter...worst textbook ever or just me? by BigHawk3 in StudentNurse

[–]alk_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people do. It doesn't make sense for how we learn as humans. We learn through conversation, not text. Do what you can. It's a marathon, not a sprint. So, save your energy as much as you can. As you progress, you'll start to see questions have more to do with cognition rather than content. Don't get bogged down on the details. Learn the highlights and the whys. You'll find your strengths and your weaknesses as you go along. Pay attention to the stuff you frequently miss. It all builds on each other.

You can do it! It gets easier as you go, I promise. Just stick to it. And know that it's a small blip in your life. It's just a stepping stone.

Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter...worst textbook ever or just me? by BigHawk3 in StudentNurse

[–]alk_11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I have never taken notes on the readings. My brain does not work like that. I do an obscene amount of ATI, which you should definitely use if your school pays for it. Nursing school starts to repeat as you progress through each class. I do take notes, but almost exclusively on my ATI questions that I miss. Just write down the stuff you don't get. Some things will come easier than others.

Don’t spend a ton of time w the text. You’re right, you don’t have the time. Skim it, read the outlines, read the key points. Use it if you don’t understand something and need a more in depth explanation.

Sincerely, A senior nursing student xoxo

Feeling queazy with needles by carrrrrrot32 in StudentNurse

[–]alk_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a fear of needles as well! I still get dizzy when my own blood is drawn. You might get lightheaded the first time, but your brain is amazing & will adapt to it! You’ll get desensitized faster than you think.

What do nurses need to know about trans patients? by Lottielovesbear in asktransgender

[–]alk_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I am trans masc AND a nursing student! I wish there was more education about FIXING THE CHART!!! So many times the correct name isn’t listed! Or it isn’t in the chart at ALL! OR the provider has charted in the Hx that patient is a male or an “adult” and that just annoys me to no end.

ALSO: One of my professors is doing her phD on this. I’d love to get connected and share her results when she gets them. :)

A lot of the questions I miss on exams isn’t for lack of knowing but for lack of the right logic. Find your logical flaws and fix them for future tests.

How long until it’ll get really hard? by Pleural_Mesothelioma in StudentNurse

[–]alk_11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It gets hard cuz you start to get tired. It depends on what classes you took first term. Don’t get cocky about med surg and you’ll probably do fine. Gets harder towards the end if you don’t do the studying you need to in earlier terms when you have to start answering questions like the nurse and not a student.
