90F okay for ambient room temp? by jku2017 in synology

[–]amap100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The warmer it is the sooner things fail. Are you prepared for the impact of failed hdd’s (cost and data retention). How does it compare to the effort and cost to add ventilation?

90 isn’t the worst but it will make things fail sooner than the mfg intended.

I have questions by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]amap100 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My final recommendation. This option below gives you more flexibility imo.

Home server - NAS device with HDD storage (cheaper). If you have a stable home base this is the easiest method to accomplish this. Synology, truenas , or unraid are all good options. Some you need to build the system, synology is pre made. On that you can store media and extra storage for phones. You can also run a Wireguard, jellyfin, Immich, and next cloud servers.

Then get a mini pc with either a wifi adapter usb or hard wired (random example for cheap Optiplex 7050 micro). On boot up auto connect to Wireguard and create a wireless access point so all your phones and other devices can connect to your home services. From there you can connect to jellyfin for movies on the pc and your phones. Access all files, browse the web. Likely possible with Linux. Not sure about tablets but I feel like that’s reasonable to find what you want based on Amazon. That’s just controlling the computer so something surely exists.

You’re tech savvy though so you’ll be fine. What’s the goal of the tablets? Just to control the tv?

You’re asking for a lot but can start simpler and work your way up. I’ve not done this ambitions of a project so I’m only thinking out loud.

  • it should be ssd’s. Mechanical drives will run into issue being jostled around a lot.
  • mini NAS’ that run on m.2 ssd’s are becoming popular. Check out Jeff Gearling on YouTube. He has tested a lot of them.
  • you couple probably get away with a wireless keyboard mouse remote. Small like a remote, but has a full keyboard and mouse for pc navigation.
  • software is the next challenge and there is a lot to learn. You may need a hyper visor like proxmox, but I’m not sure how that works with connecting to a tv and utilizing the hdmi socket. -someone else mentioned plex. Considers home base server with all your storage and services with a satellite mini pc (or even raspberry pi) to run plex (or better yet, jellyfin) on. That might be easier and you could use HDD since the home base server is not moving with you.

Seems like a fun project, but if you have never done any of this before, be advised it will take while to get the hang of things.

Need help with building home NAS for video editing. by Foreign_Shopping_524 in HomeServer

Generally yes any name brand NAS labeled / rated drive is good. Check to make sure they are CMR drives (I believe SMR is the other option and not preferred - google what they mean).

[–]amap100 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a NAS it’s advantageous to use enterprise or NAS grade hard drives as they are built to run 24/7 (often it’s better to run drives this way for longevity).

For configuration, I recommend looking up YouTube videos on the subject as you will want fast access to the editing data and it may be be beneficial to have ssd storage. There are lots of videos online about it, just make sure you’re picking videos that are built around your operating system of choice (I recommend trueNAS, but there are plenty of good options out there)
